Pretty naive article. For example, "The NBA hired Demps to be general manager, and had no business overruling him on a basketball decision." Owners do that all the time. For ANY major move, the owner has the final say, and lots of big deals didn't take place after the GMs had agreed but an owner vetoed it.
The real point is, it shouldn't have been Stern but rather Jac Sperling who made that call. Sperling was appointed specifically so Stern could remain at arms-length from the team operations.
Instead, you have inherent conflicts between Stern's two roles, which looked really bad even if his role as Commissioner didn't interfere with his decisions as de facto owner. And to make it worse, Gilbert's publicly-leaked letter made it even more apparent. I wrote about it here:
