All About That D… Scott went back to the first bucket of the game, a transition score for a Warrior bigman. The transition D was just awful. The Laker bigs were killed and no one else was helping. “We can’t win that way. Period.”

The Warriors scored several more like that right out of the gates of the first quarter, and quickly had 20 points in 6 minutes. This was bad D from the start. Bad D not because of offensive execution or turnovers, just bad D. The Warriors rolled from there to 74 points in the first half, getting whatever they wanted.

Nothing changed to start the second half as they gave up 41 points in the third. Scott’s patience has finally run out. He’s saying exactly what I mentioned he’d have to.

“I got to assume that when I see guys jogging that you’re tired. And if I assume that, then I’ve got to make changes. It’s that simple,” Scott said. His bigmen just weren’t up to the challenge defensively. “We’re losing anyway, so I don’t have to play you.”

The Lakers are lucky the Warriors only put 21 points on them in the fourth quarter. They lost 136-115, fortunate to get away without giving up 140+.

It’s impossible to talk about offense when you are that bad defensively…and you just have 7 turnovers on the offensive end. Just awful, awful D.

“I’m not worried about the offensive end. I’m really not. I don’t even care about it right now,” Scott said.

Kobe -- -- “If a purse gets stolen right in front of you, how many blocks are you going to let that guy run?” Kobe said. They were down 15-6 when Kobe started to turn it up a notch. “Things go good, it’s us. Things go bad, it’s on me,” Kobe said, taking blame for the team’s troubles. Kobe will take blame for scoring a lot in this game, but the defense was piss poor right out of the gates and never changed, even before Kobe throttled it up. Good to see him bounce back from the last game. He said he got a lot of rest. Kobe scored 44 in three quarters of ball. Had the D held it close enough for him to return in the fourth quarter, he probably would have had 50 with ease, even a chance at 60. You just can’t give up 20 points every 6 minutes from the very start until the about when the Warriors starters sat. “We’re not getting back in transition and giving up a lot of points,” Kobe said. He said it was hustle and speed. The bigmen were trailing the Warriors bigmen too often. Kobe and the guards really need to help them in transition, for sure. But the defense by the bigs was just pitiful. The Stats: He scored 44 points on 15-34 shooting (3-12 from three, 11-16 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -34. The Action: He missed a wide open three, hesitating a moment trying to measure it. He sank a 20-footer from the top of the key. He missed a long jumper standing on the three line. He probed off the pick and swished the wing jumper. He was blocked from behind after taking some contact with no call. He pulled up at the FT line and drained the jumper. He found Hill in the lane for a score. He drained a pull-up jumper from the wing. He missed a three. He drew FTs and made one. He iso’d and hit an elbow jumper. He drained a deep three before the screen came over. He missed a tough chuck from three next time down. He missed a tough fallaway, it was tapped back out to him and he drained a three. He iso’d and whipped a bullet pass to Davis at the front of the rim for a dunk at the end of the quarter. He had 17 points in the first quarter on 7-13 shooting. He was hit on a wing jumper with no call and missed. He missed a three. Green, who got Hill in the eye the previous play, hit Kobe in the eye on the next one, after a long break and treatment, he got to the line and made both FTs. He deflected a pass off his man. He missed a tough turnaround from the top of key. He swished an extremely tough step-back corner jumper. He wanted FTs on a pull up at the three line, no call. He iso’d, up-faked and swished the baseline jumper. Nice outlet to Boozer leading the break, put it right in his lap in full stride. He drained a wing three next time down. He worked off a brush screen, made sure he got contact on the three this time and drew FTs, he made only just one, rare (he usually knocks down all three). He missed a short jumper, Hill got it and gave it back, Kobe missed a three, Hill got it and scored. He was fouled on a pull-up at the FT line, he made one again. He missed a three at the end of the half. He scored 28 points on 24 shots in the first half. Second Half: He fouled a three shooter on a poor closeout. He forced up and missed a wing three. He took a pass in the paint and drew FTs on the reverse, he made both. He missed an off-balance, forced pull-up jumper. He posted up and drew more FTs, he made both. He gambled for a steal and came up empty, layup for his man around Boozer. Good look at an open three and he missed. He probed off an awkward horns sequence and scored And-1 layup through three defenders, he made the FT. He attacked the paint, pumped the D in the air and took hard contact for more FTs, he made just one again. He iso’d and drained a wing jumper next time down. He scooped up a brick by Wes and scored the putback layup. He missed a short floater he’s usually automatic on. He pushed up a Davis block and hit the pull-up wing jumper in transition. His pass was stolen trying to give it up when trapped off a screen. He blew past his man for a layup. He missed a long three at the end of the quarter.

Lin -- -- “If they’re hitting shots, they’re hitting shots. We can live with that. We can’t live with the stuff we gave up. It wasn’t shots, it was just like layups, dunks, open stuff. It was like there was no resistance,” Lin said. That’s pretty spot on. Having Curry and Thompson hit long shots with men on, you live with that. Give up easy layups in transition or easy post scores to bigs, you’re in trouble. He said at the top of the list the problems are communication, trust and effort. Offensively, Kobe has been looking for a wingman. Instead, he’s flying solo. Lin was completely invisible in his first stint and poor in his second stint when he had a floor spacing unit out there for him to start that. Scott benched him essentially the rest of the first half for Price. “Honestly, it felt like today I was trying to come out aggressive and make plays, but for whatever reason I don’t think we hit any type of rhythm on either side of the ball,” Lin said. Really bummed that Kelly got injured. That second unit to start the second quarter was made for Lin with Kelly and Davis out there. Lin said this was a big step back for him. Hopefully, he bounces back and starts shouldering more of the load. But he had been putting together some steady games. Not spectacular, but steady. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -37. The Action: He missed a step-back bank from the right side. He was picked trying to run a screen-roll, ouch. He was blocked or threw a pass away in the lane. He attacked in early offense and missed badly on a forced shot. Second Half: He fell asleep defensively and gave up an open three to Curry ball watching. Ball watching again and he got backdoored for a layup.

Hill -- -- Bogut was just scoring with ease over him in the post or getting some easy ones in transition. It was just awful to watch. No resistance at all by Hill. You’ve got to take away the little things from the Warriors because their outside shooting will make life very, very hard on you. So if you are getting throttled on post ups or getting out run on the break, by the other team’s third, fourth or fifth options, you’re going to lose big. Offensively, Hill struggled again with his shot, which hurts our flow issues. He did a good job, however, working that offensive glass. With as many long, poor shots as we take, there should be a lot of good opportunities for him to get busy under the rim. He finished with a double-double and did a good job getting to the line. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-9 shooting (7-9 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 6 offensive, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -37 The Action: He tipped in a missed Boozer post up. He missed an 18-footer. He missed an open 17-footer. Bogut scoring with ease over and around him. He helped regain possession crashing the glass. He flashed to the ball, took a pass and hit the floater. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Clarkson, he made one. He scooped up a blocked drive from Clarkson and scored the layup. He drew FTs on the offensive glass as he got hit in the eye in the process, he made one again. He drew more FTs on the brick from Wes (these guys should give him a ton of opportunities for offensive boards), he made both FTs. He grabbed a missed Kobe jumper and gave it back to him, he grabbed the next Kobe miss on the same sequence and scored the And-1, he made the FT. Second Half: He missed an open baseline jumper. Rare attack off the dribble (his outside shot not falling again) and he drew FTs putting on the brakes under the hoop, he made both. He missed another open jumper. He attacked from the elbow, lowered his shoulder and charged. He missed an open 16-footer.

Boozer -- -- “It was tough for us to get into a good rhythm,” Boozer said with Kobe aggressiveness. I really hate guys who have to have shots to play D. Unfortunately, Boozer is not even going to give us that even if he gets his shots. His defense is just awful. He doesn’t hustle in transition and if someone gets past a guard and he’s the only bigman back there, it’s points on the board. We were getting our butts kicked from the start as Boozer was trotting back on D or taking poor angles because he wasn’t in position. Someone get him a camera so he can take a few pictures while he watches. What’s irritating is he had 13 shots in 21 minutes. That’s plenty of shots to be in a rhythm in that amount of time and is no excuse for getting outworked. Just hate lame excuses like this. I hope Scott sits him the next time he trots back. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-13 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -28. The Action: Nice low post position and he missed the short one, but Hill cleaned it up. He missed a 17-footer. He couldn’t finish an easy one in the paint, got it back and was rejected badly. He missed a short one in the paint. Not close on a jumper. He missed a wide open wing jumper. He missed an elbow jumper. He scored a layup off the Kobe outlet in transition. Second Half: He posted up and swished a turnaround jumper. Not close on an open pull-up jumper. He posted up and hit the turnaround in the middle of the lane. He posted up, drop-stepped and missed the layup.

Johnson -- -- He managed the team-low -41. Just a ridiculous number for anyone on this team to have and obviously goes beyond just any one player. Defensively, he’s got a tough assignment with Klay, who’s just killing it this season. I’ll take 18 points on 5-11 shooting from Klay. You’ve got to hold the other guys down, however. Offensively, his shot selection is just terrible. He takes too many shots that only Kobe and Nick can hit. What’s worse is we put him in positions like that for him to take them. He’s just not going to be efficient. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-11 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -41. The Action: He missed a wing three in transition. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key. Not close on a long jumper. Horrible long chuck from the perimeter, miss. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Davis. He flashed to the ball out of the triangle and hit the elbow jumper. He forced and missed a wing jumper, just horrible shot selection. Second Half: He slapped down a pass on the two-man D to get a stop. He rattled in a long turnaround jumper in early offense, not a good shot. Ballwatching and he gave up an open three to Thompson. Not close on a wing three with a man on (he had Price open in the corner with an extra pass). Nice anticipation and he drew a charge on Klay. He missed a chuck from the elbow. He missed a wide open sideline three on a Kobe kickout.

Kelly -- Well, so much for that. Really, the only big we have that can spread the floor and be a triple threat. We finally get him in a lineup with Lin and Davis. He gets a couple of scores on the first few possessions of that and reinjured himself on the second score. He went straight to the locker room. Not sure why he was cleared to play to begin with. I imagine he’s out for a long time now. What sucks is he’s a very capable team defender, much better than Boozer. He spaces the floor to help guys like Lin and Kobe. And now he’s done again. Lakers, really, really needed him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards in 5 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He attacked across the lane, missed, got it back and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked from the wing and scored a layup and injured his hamstring in the process, horrible. Second Half: He did not return to the game.

Davis -- -- “We’re not 100% on the same page,” Davis said defensively. He had 3 blocks and 2 steals, really the only big playing D tonight. We’ve got to play him more, even if he fouls out every game. Give him the run. Asked about Kobe’s aggressiveness and he went the opposite route as Boozer. “I’m just looking to hit the glass. I don’t get into who’s shooting, who’s doing this. I just worry about myself and playing hard and being aggressive when I’m out there,” Davis said. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-10 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 blocks and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a leaning one hander in a crowd. He rejected a layup out of bounds. Great help D on one end to block and control a shot on help D. He then set up a teammate for a layup on the other end. Second Half: He missed a turnaround jumper. He swatted a shot on a nice recovery, it led to a Kobe transition score. His jumphook was goaltended. He sank an elbow jumper. He missed a triangle play set up out of a timeout that got him a good look in the paint, we got it back and he eventually scored an easy one in the paint. He tipped in a Clarkson miss.

Price -- -- The first points for a Laker point guard were with 56 seconds left in the game. Yikes. He did lead the team with 5 assists. Scott gave him more minutes tonight with Lin MIA and probably th extra fourth quarter garbage time. So he ended up with starter minutes. Our PGs combined for 2 points on 0-5 shooting. That won’t get it done, but our sets aren’t designed great for PGs, either. Defensively, he had some moments with 3 steals. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: Nothing to report in first stint. Back in for Lin, he swiped a ball under the hoop. He attacked and missed a tough layup in transition. Second Half: Nice reach that popped a ball free to Clarkson. He missed a pull-up wing jumper badly. Nice help D on the two-man game to get a stop. He drew an illegal screen call trying to go over the top of a screen on D. But he gave it back up on the other end with his own illegal screen. Not close on an open three. He grabbed an offensive board and drew FTs trying to power it in.

Clarkson -- -- He had 28 points in the D-League game last night. Good to see him get some nice run tonight and he scored double figures. Swaggy will be coming back. Hopefully, that just cuts into Wes’s minutes and Clarkson still gets some run as back up SG. Really one of the few interesting things we get to watch. He played in control and looked for his spots. He pushed tempo more than probably anyone else on the Lakers tonight. Defensively, he always gives a strong effort. He had a couple steals tonight. He just needs experience to build on his effort. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-6 shooting (6-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He drew FTs on a long floater from the wing, he made both. He was blocked trying to finish in a crowd in transition. He broke his man down, got into the heart of the D and dumped it to Hill who was fouled for FTs. He attacked again, was blocked, but Hill cleaned up the drive. Second Half: He worked off the wing screen and scored a layup around his man. He stole the ball on the other end and hit the pull-up jumper in transition from about 16 feet out. He set up Sacre for the open baseline jumper with a nice no-look bounce pass. He missed a pull-up from the wing. He jumped a passing lane to swipe the ball, pushed it out and drew FTs (probably could have dumped it off for an easier score, but great hustle), he made both. Good job changing ends and Price found him with an outlet for FTs, he made both. He missed a jumphook.

Henry -- -- He had 33 points the previous night on the D-League team. That may have helped him with his confidence, because he looked more like his old self, mentally anyway. He was able to attack the paint with confidence and draw FTs with consistency. It’s a step in the right direction for him. Let’s see if he can now build off of this. His minutes were limited to the second half garbage time (shoot, first quarter looked like garbage time in this one). The Stats: He scored 8 points on 1-1 shooting (6-8 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked an opening in the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked hard down the lane again and drew more FTs, he made one. He attacked from the wing and drew more FTs at the rim, he made one. He drained a long wing jumper in early offense. Lazy outlet to Clarkson to erase a sure hoop when it was picked off. He attacked down the middle of the lane and drew more FTs, he made both.

Sacre -- -- He had his shot dropping from the perimeter. I worry when he has to iso or we dump the ball into the post for him. But if he can get to his face-up jumper out of that, he’s a consistent threat on that. He was the only Laker big able to help space the floor of the pick and pop tonight. I suspect we’re going to see a little more of him a little sooner as Scott needs his bigmen to hustle. Rob will probably also get subbed out for not hustling, as well. We’ll see. Scott is looking for energy on D right now. If he wants to crack back in the rotation, that’s what he needs to bring. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-8 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He drained an elbow jumper off the two-man game. He got a kind bounce on a baseline turnaround jumper. He swished a wide open baseline jumper off the Clarkson feed. He missed a baseline turnaround. He iso’d and airballed a turnaround jumper from the elbow, ugggly. He swished a face-up jumper from the baseline next time down. He swished a baseline jumper. He scooped up a loose ball and missed a short one.

Scott -- -- This was a beatdown from the start… The Warriors were just lighting up the Lakers early with easy scores in transition. They trailed 20-12 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… He sat Boozer for Davis… Laker offense was just horrible, settling for long jumper. Meanwhile, Hill is getting destroyed by Bogut for easy scores… Down 16, he sat Lin and JHill for Kelly and Price… 32-15 with a couple minutes left, just embarrassing. Kobe the only one showing anything offensively, but that D? Horrible… He finally sat Wes for Clarkson… The Lakers trailed 34-23, Kobe with 17 in the quarter to give the Lakers something… He stared a Davis, Kelly, Clarkson, Lin, Price lineup… After a couple scores by Kelly, he injured himself and we brought back in Wes, uggh… He sat Davis for Hill down 12… XXX Back to the starters with 7:22 left down by 13… More layups for the Warriors against this unit… Down 20, Scott called a timeout. This is just bad… He sat Lin for Price… Sacre in for Davis who picked up his third foul… Hill back for Boozer… The Lakers trailed 74-55 at the half. Only stat needed to see is 74. That’s absurd… More awful D. They aren’t even close to competing with the Warriors… He sat Lin for Price… The Lakers trailed 115-79 heading into the fourth… He started a Sacre, Davis, Henry, Clarkson, Price unit… Garbage time all fourth quarter… The Lakers gave up 81 points between the second and third quarters tonight… The Lakers had 13 more shots and 9 more FTs and still couldn’t outscore that Warriors. No resistance from the D…

Thanks DB. So from what you are telling us, it is the offense that is the problem right?

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Appreciate the write up as always

did you read the "Scott" section? The man is bleeding from his eyes watching and writing up these games.

This team has finally broken me. I've come to accept losing. I am at peace with it. I was actually laughing at the end of the third quarter.

We're only 10 games in. I can take it November.

Sure wish we had Randle out there, though. At least even the beatdowns would have more interest.

“Things go good, it’s us. Things go bad, it’s on me,” Kobe said, taking blame for the team’s troubles

was it really taking the blame??

And for that I'm forever grateful...and will accidentally click on that Volkswagen link even more often - maybe every 1 minute instead of every 2...

On a serious note, DB didn't use any bad words and no name-callings. It's takes great restraint.

We were never in this game. The only interesting thing was Kobe blowing up for 44. Huge disappointment. Just glad I didn't pay Staples Center money to watch this dreck.

right now theres no proper team, just each player's personal agenda. They all want this season to be over IMO

Painful game to watch. I think the Lakers offense is partly at fault for their terrible defense. Our bigs are terrible and can't get anything close to the rim. Everything is a jumpshot, and they aren't all that good at jumpshots. Those missed Js turn into easy transition scores for teams like the Warriors.

Thanks again DB for the summary. I'm living through them for now. I'm not making it through the first quarter on TV. More important things to do than watch the Lakers get mauled again. What I did see was porous D and bad shooting. They're probably feeding off each other.

I hope the Lakers make a trade to improve the roster, or this team is going to implode. I don't even think the post magic - pre van exel lakers were this bad. Is the top 5 pick worth all this humiliation?

Lin is starting to remind me of Pau. Says all the right things after the game, right after he plays like a complete wuss. Just keeping me on the edge of fully disliking him.

Mitch is a stealth tanker. I like watching Ed Davis, though, but we need to run offense through him more. He's a keeper.

Lin is starting to remind me of Pau. Says all the right things after the game, right after he plays like a complete wuss. Just keeping me on the edge of fully disliking him.

Scott, by any means, is the true master of right talking. (one on one defense, more defensive fouls, 3s policy, Kobe PT, etc)

Princeton "the everyone Bricks and Chucks system" long-2s (no OPEN LOOKS/SPACING) get full dislike from me

Thanks DB for suffering along with us (and then some!).

I think everyone besides Kobe should be ashamed of themselves. When they put on that Laker jersey, they should feel pride. That means you need to hustle and work hard during each and every possession. These guys however, are just here to earn a paycheck and couldn't care less about the game. It's unreal to see a team this pathetic. -_-

We're missing Ellington too. He was playing good on both sides before he had to take leave. Thanks DB for the write up, I think X needs 1 more D-league game to regain full confidence from what I read (Didn't watch the 2nd half). It's frustrating that Kelly went down too. He's an upgrade over Boozer when healthy.

I think eventually X needs to start, and Wes in the dog house or small ball PF. He needs to be a strong finisher as he is athletic, but he's not right now. I think Lin should be on the bench with Swaggy.

Price
Bryant
Henry
Hill
Davis

Lin
Ellington
Young
Johnson/Boozer
Sacre

Losing is one thing. Losing with no resistance is another.

I hate the fact that Lin mentioned communication at the top of the list of problems. The guys may not have the talent, you live with that, but lack of communication is inexcusable. Lack of effort is inexcusable.

This one was just painful.

I understand we are not a good time now or in the forseeable future, but damn!!

This team is going to struggle to get 20 wins at this pace.

The D looks worse than last year.

Hill getting outclassed early and often by Bogut and nobody putting up resistance and slowly getting back on D often.

Each layup by the warriors was met with a thought in my head "oh, he'll block that shot or at least give a hard foul." After about the 10th time I stopped thinking that and just shrugged.

I know Scott needs to instill defensive things in this group but wow!

I honestly don't think there is a solution in the wings any time in the next couple years.

Bye.

thanks db!

i agree when Young comes back Lin should return to the bench. not as demotion but i think it will better for him to play with Young than Kobe who is obviously another Harden/Melo to him.

hopefully we replace Wesley with another player a defensive SF. Beasley or even Panda or anybody who is avail who could defend and shoot an open 3.

Price/Kobe/SF/Boozer/Jordan

Lin/Young/Henry/Davis/C

trade Sacre/Wesley for that SF.
