Coming Up Short in OT… While the Lakers D was able to hold the Nuggets to just 14 points in the fourth quarter, offensively they were only able to score 11 themselves. Just par for the course this season as they eventually fell 101-94 in overtime to the visiting Nuggets. The Lakers are now just 1-6 at home.

The two teams traded hoops and leads all night long. Overtime seemed appropriate.

Unable to secure a defensive board on a missed FT, the Lakers gave up a 4-point possession late in the OT. They never recovered from that miscue and were forced to play the foul game in the last several possessions trying to get lucky. Their luck ran out.

Kobe set up teammates throughout the game and was scoring at an efficient pace through three quarters, but was unable to manufacture points consistently in that fourth quarter as the offense bogged down. The Lakers put Ed Davis in the starting lineup as Boozer sat out this one. The defense was stronger, for sure, but the Lakers just had too little talent on the floor to consistently produce offensively. At least they weren’t blown out, I guess.

Kobe -- -- Good mix to his game out of the gates. He was finding teammates but also finding his own shots when the opportunities presented themselves. He should have had more assists in this game than the stats will show. Teammates were missing wide open looks (the bigs not helping out Kobe here on a number of open looks). In the fourth, Kobe throttled up the offense, but was unable to produce efficiently. He missed a number of good looks down the stretch as our offense dumped the ball to him and he tried to score on single coverage. In OT, we went back to a mixed offense with Lin picking up some of the slack, but the Lakers D failed them. I liked the mix to his game in this one. The 4 assists doesn’t do him justice. Huge minutes for him, however tonight. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 10-24 shooting (0-2 from three, 7-10 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 44 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He posted up and scored easily on the Lakers first possession. Nice bounce pass to Hill on the weakside of the triangle for a dunk. He sank a turnaround from the top of the key. He missed an elbow turnaround after nearly throwing it away. He posted up and swished the step-back up against the shotclock. He posted up and missed a 15-foot turnaround. He swished a baseline jumper off an offensive board. Impossible off-balance turnaround and he missed (should have given that one up). He attacked and passed at the front of the rim when McGee was challenging (Sacre for the jumper). He spun in the post and drew FTs on the reverse in a crowd, he made one. He overpowered his man in the post for an easy score. He went behind his back to Davis who was fouled on the dunk attempt. He missed a challenged three on a two-for-one attempt. He had 11 points on 5-9 shooting and 5 boards. Only 2 assists, but way more passes to open teammates who missed. Second Half: Easy lefty jumphook in the paint after working the post. He drew FTs taking an outlet and getting hacked against a mismatch, he made both. Nice find again to setup Davis for a score. Horrible pass to Hill in transition, right out of bounds. He up-faked and drew contact for FTs, he made one. He backed his man down and swished the turnaround. He bullied Nate down the lane and drew FTs on the turnaround, he made one. He jab-stepped, lost his man, but missed the flat elbow jumper short. Tough fallaway after picking up his dribble and he came up short. He attacked in early offense, missed, got it back and scored the putback layup. He posted up, spun baseline and swished the turnaround. He missed a turnaround in the post on iso. Nice rotation to force a travel on a big as he positioned himself well. He missed a baseline jumper. He set up Hill for FTs under the rim on the no-looker after he and Lin worked the two-man game. He attacked the rim hard, took contact and no call on the missed layup. Short on a turnaround with 35 seconds left. Overtime: He backed his man down in the paint and drew FTs, he made both to tie it up. Out of a timeout, he worked the post and swished the short turnaround. He missed a good look from the same spot next time down. He found Hill in transition for FTs. He missed a tough chuck at a three after a switch (Lakers probably should have tried to go for two with as bad as the Nuggets were hitting FTs and Kobe could have blown past the big on the switch there).

Lin -- -- Good to see him involved in the OT. Not good to see him miss two FTs he earned out of that. If you are looking for a point or two to help the Lakers bring this back to a one-possession ball game, those misses were painful. Lin was the only one besides Kobe to produce offensively in this game. We should have involved him a little more in the fourth after his strong third quarter. The Lakers went back to calling his number more (or Lin did it himself) in the OT. Despite the loss, this was a positive step forward for him as he looked more like a wingman to Kobe even in crunch time. Defensively, he got into some foul trouble. I really thought he got robbed on a call late in the fourth when he stripped a man with 16 seconds left. That looked like a great defensive play. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-15 shooting (0-4 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He threw a pass away getting caught in the air. He took an outlet and scored in transition. He was rejected on a layup attempt working off the screen-roll. Bad kickout right to the Nuggets, points the other way. He attacked in early offense, got his man in the air and scored a layup. He missed a long three on a kickout. He missed a wide open wing three. Second Half: He used a second Nugget defender to screen his man, attacked and hit the bank from the right side. He sank an elbow pull-up jumper. He attacked a seam when the Nuggets bigmen were drawn out on the perimeter and he scored an And-1 layup, getting knocked to the floor, he made the FT. He pushed out the Davis block with speed and scored a layup over a helpless defender. He sank an elbow pull-up jumper. He hit Sacre for the open jumper off the two-man game. He missed an open wing three. He missed a pull-up working off the high screen. He swiped the ball, pushed it out, looked off the defender and hit Wes for the nasty And-1 jam, massive dunk. Wow, great reach to strip his man with 16 seconds left and he was called for the foul. Overtime: He swiped a kickout and was fouled. He iso’d and hit the turnaround from about 12 feet out on the left side. He picked up his fifth foul on the other end. He got tapped on a wing three on iso. He probed the lane and drew FTs on the pull-up, he missed both, uggh, those were huge.

Hill -- -- Hard to get mad at him for a defensive board when he was pulling them down all game…but down 1, Hill gave up an offensive board on a missed FT and the Nuggets hit a three off it. The Lakers were down 4 with 1:28 left. That was a killer and put the Nuggets in the driver’s seat down the stretch. Offensively, I’m not sure how many times Kobe looked for him on the court, but it was certainly a lot and not a lot of assists for Kobe out of it. The two did team up for a sweet dunk early on when Kobe hit him with a bounce pass. Some rare good ball movement on that sequence to get an easy one. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-8 shooting (7-8 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He dunked off the bounce pass from Kobe out of the weakside triangle. He attacked the paint and drew FTs forcing the issue, he made both. He was called for a charge working out of the post. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He couldn’t handle an interior pass from Kobe, turnover (looked flat-footed maybe expecting the shot). Not close on a long wing jumper. Second Half: He missed a wide open jumper on a Kobe kickout. He drained a tougher wing jumper on the same possession. He missed a wide open jumper from the top of the key. He sank a couple FTs after getting fouled on the defensive glass. He was stripped by a small on a dunk attempt off a Kobe setup. He missed a wing jumper on an inbounds up against the shotclock. Up 3 and he was called for a loose ball foul on the offensive boards to give up FTs with 2 minutes left. He drew FTs on the other end when Kobe set him up with the no-looker, he made one. Overtime: He drew FTs on the feed from Kobe in transition, he made both. He couldn’t secure another missed FT.

Davis -- -- Davis got the start for Boozer who sat out this one. The Lakers defense was notably better all game. Unfortunately, Davis got into foul trouble and fouled out early in the fourth picking up two quick ones to have him watching. That will be an issue with him if he gets more minutes. The Lakers without Randle, Kelly and Boozer were a little light in the bigman depth. Still, I’m glad we didn’t have to see Boozer repeatedly picked on over and over all game. Offensively, not a lot of love from the refs in the first half for Davis. Seemed like he could have been to the line a few more times. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 block, 1 turnover and 6 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He drew FTs on an inbounds, he made one. He lost the ball in the post. He missed a step-back wing jumper. After a no-call trying to score in the post, he rejected a man on the other end to ignite a breakaway. He drew FTs on a dunk attempt off the behind-the-back pass from Kobe, he made one. He was blocked on a layup in transition. Second Half: Great double team in the paint to force a bad pass that was easily stolen and the Lakers got a transition score out of it. He scored a layup off the dish from Kobe. He couldn’t secure a defensive board and fouled, his fifth to start the fourth quarter. He fouled out a minute later on a push on a defensive board.

Johnson -- -- Kind of wasted a decent game from Wes. He wasn’t sensation on offense except for one play—a massive And-1 throwdown in transition late in regulation. Clarkson and Sacre’s reaction on the bench after the And-1 dunk was great, too. Defensively, Wes was very active. He was challenging shots, altering shots to lead the team with 3 blocks. He also had a couple steals. Just nice when he brings the energy and intelligent effort on that end of the floor. The Lakers starters were 0-9 from three. Ouch. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 (0-3 form three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 blocks and 3 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Weak chuck from three off a bad, low kickout and he missed. Nice recovery to roof his man on D and get a stop. Great D smothering his man and rejecting a jumper across the lane (that’s the athleticism we need to see more of). He missed a wing three. Quick first step baseline and he jammed on the drive. Nice strip from behind on help to prevent a dunk on the other end. Second Half: He swished a pull-up jumper from the right side. Fading on the open catch and shoot and he missed. He missed an open corner three on the Kobe kickout. He took a pass from Lin in transition and crammed a nasty And-1 dunk over the defender (bench going crazy…glad Sacre was on the bench for that highlight reaction), he made the FT. Nice D on his man on the other end to force a miss on iso. Overtime:

Young -- -- His offensive absence was sorely missed tonight. Outside of Lin, no one really stepped up to help Kobe offensively. Any kind of game from Nick in this one and the Lakers get the W. He had one very brief stretch where he had the Nuggets on their heels. The rest of the game was just bricks. He didn’t nearly bank in a shot at the end of regulation…but the basketball gods wouldn’t give him that one after the crappy game he put together before that. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-12 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a wing three on his first attempt. He was called for a travel falling down. He sank a pull-up 17-footer in early offense. He attacked in transition, drew contact but no call and missed. He drained a wing three on iso next time down and that forced a timeout. He iso’d and missed a jumper from the top of the key. He missed a step-back from the wing. Second Half: He spun off the three line and was hit by the help D on the pull-up jumper, he made both FTs. He missed an open three. He missed a step-back chuck from the wing. He missed a three up against the shotclock. He airballed a fallaway over Nate in the post, uggh. He just missed a banked 40-footer at the buzzer. Overtime: Not close on a pull-up in the lane on iso.

Price -- Really waste of minutes from him. He had one steal on help D but otherwise he was invisible and missing open threes. We have enough guys who can miss threes. Usually, he at least sets up teammates as the trigger man of some of our sequences, but not even an assist in this one. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: His man blew around him for a layup. He was called for a carry trying to iso. He missed an open wing three. Second Half: Way short on an open three. Good job getting back in transition to draw a charge off that. Nice help D reach to swipe the ball in the paint. He missed a corner three. Great block/challenge at the rim on a bigger man, but we then fouled a few seconds later unable to secure the ball.

Ellington -- -- The Lakers were a combined 3-24 from three. Wayne hit a couple of those, but in 7 attempts. He played a great first half in which he scored all his points, but did nothing the rest of the game. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He drained a wing three on a swing pass. He took an outlet on the break and jammed over a man (that got the bench up). He missed a wing three. He swished an open wing three on a kickout. He missed an open sideline three. He had 8 points on 3-5 shooting in the half. Second Half: He missed an open corner jumper on a kickout. Way off on a wide open wing three.

Sacre -- -- You know what, this might have been Sacre’s best game as a pro. He was an efficient scoring threat, but also came up with 3 steals and a block. It’s rare we have a full two-way game from him where he’s not dragging the team down just a little on one end or the other. He’s clearly put in work on his offensive game. He scored the 13 on just 6 shots in this one. He led the Lakers with the +3. With Boozer out, the Lakers got a good lift from Sacre. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-6 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed an open wing jumper. He swished a jumper on the Kobe kickout. He missed a wide open jumper on another Kobe kickout. He drew FTs on a Kobe missed FT, he made one. Second Half: He scored a putback off a Hill miss. He posted up and swished the tough turnaround on the baseline. Soft touch on the 18-footer off the two-man game with Lin and it bounced in. He rejected a baseline drive on help D. He earned FTs when he set a screen for Kobe’s man on the throwback play and was run over, he made both. He got a clear-out foul on Nate who led with a foot. Great reach around on a post entry to knock it away and then draw a foul for FTs, he made both.

Scott -- -- Lakers defense looked a lot more mobile with Boozer’s softness out of there… He brought in Young and Sacre for Johnson and Davis midway through the quarter tied 11-11… Price in for Lin… Wes back in at PF for Hill… Offensively, Kobe moving the ball well… The Lakers trailed 21-19 after the first quarter… He started a Sacre, Johnson, Young, Ellington, Price unit… Young getting it going to force a timeout early in the second quarter, Lakers up 24-21… Lakers were down by 1 when Lin and Kobe returned for Price and Young to go with Johnson, Ellington and Davis… Hill in for Johnson to close the half… The Lakers trailed 41-39 at the half… Nuggets finished the half 4-19 from three after starting 0-11 from three… Coaches liked the Laker D…Good defense leading to offense for the Lakers and the Nuggets called an early timeout down 56-51 in the third… Davis had to sit with 4 fouls midway through the quarter for Sacre… Price, then Young in for Lin and Johnson with a few minutes left in the quarter… The Lakers led 75-72 heading into the fourth… He started a Sacre, Davis, Young, Ellington, Price unit… Davis picked up his fifth to start the quarter, then his sixth with 10+ minutes left as Scott gambled to leave him in. So our bigs are down to Sacre and Hill with Wes sliding up to PF. Wes in for Davis… Lakers in the penalty way early in the quarter… Scott called a timeout with the score tied 75-75, Lakers struggling to control their defensive boards... Lin and Kobe back in for Price and Young. Sacre out for Hill… Hill, Johnson, Young (back in after a rest), Kobe and Lin now midway through the quarter… The Lakers were up 1 when Kobe missed a turnaround on iso as the Nuggets didn’t double. He’s got to make the D pay for not sending help… The Lakers have the ball with 15 seconds left, tied up. Timeout Lakers. Kobe iso on the left side, pretty good look but he missed. Last couple minutes haven’t been good for Kobe down the stretch… Nuggets ball with 0.5 left. Nuggets moved on the inbounds pass before passing it in and gave it right back to the Lakers with 0.5. Scott called a 20-second timeout. Nick just missed a 40-footer… Lakers 4-27 down the stretch… In OT the teams traded hoops until Hill couldn’t secure a defensive board and we gave up a 4-point possession… Lakers down 2 and have to foul to close the game…

Thanks DB.

The Lakers defense was more mobile early in the game, but even before Davis fouled out they stopped running after the open three point shooters. Late in the game it wasn't Lakers defense as much as it was the Nuggets just sucking. Even when the Nuggets managed to get into the bonus early in the fourth they wouldn't waver from their unimaginative offense, which centered around chucking threes.

As awful as Boozer is on defense, we missed his offense. Neither team could score in rather long stretches. Having Boozer would have been decisive, especially against a team hell bent on chucking threes.

Thanks DB. Too bad, we had the momentum after Wes's dunk off of a Lin steal. We went away from team ball

Thanks DB.

I was at the game in Section 106 behind the basket with my 5 year old tonight. This win would have made the 35 mile drive back so much more enjoyable. Those 2 missed Lin free throws really hurt our chances. But then again, we wouldn't have even been in the position to win had it not been for his huge third quarter. Even though he's probably so angry at himself right now, this was a solid game for him that I hope is a right step towards being a more consistent player. I don't like watching him disappear every third game or so.

when player miss free throws, that usually means they are tired.... Lin has been 90% this season, that two misses really hurt

Sacre's best game as a pro came last year, when he had 12 points, 7 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals, 4 assists, and +15 +/- against the Blazers.

Thanks, DB.

I fell asleep after the 1st quarter (East Coast).

Was hoping to wake up and see a 'Unified highlights' thread at the top of the page… Glad it was a close game tho.
