Boss… Kobe Bryant took his game to yet another level this season. At 36 years old, 19 years in the league, he dropped a 31-point, 12-assist, 11-board performance on the Toronto Raptors to carry the Lakers to a 129-122 overtime victory. In the process, he became the only player in the history of the NBA with 30,000 points and 6,000 assists in a career.

“He’s still going pretty strong. There’s a lot left in that tank. It’s obvious,” Scott said.

Kobe set the table for teammates early and often. He picked his spots, then throttled up his scoring a little more in the fourth and OT. While Kobe had some freethrow issues again down the stretch, he came up big with a couple of scores in overtime that staggered the Raptors.

It was the defense in that OT, however, that stepped up to secure the win. The Lakers got two rejections by Jordan Hill that helped the Lakers finally close a team.

What was lacking at times again throughout this game was the interior presence from the Lakers. While L.A. did a pretty good job denying the threes and funneling to the bigs throughout the game, we just didn’t have enough back there consistently altering or challenging shots effectively. That changed in OT when Hill controlled the paint.

Congrats to Kobe on reaching the 30K/6K mark.

“That’s a huge honor. It means I passed more than people said,” Kobe joked afterward. (It’s true, though. He should finish his career with more assists than any SG.)

Kobe -- If you can't sit back and enjoy what Kobe did tonight, you're missing out on something amazing. You simply can’t ask for much more from him (aside from maybe knocking down FTs like we’re used to). He tallied his 6,000th assist tonight. He was looking to get his teammates off early with several assists in the first quarter. He didn’t force any shots unless he had to and, at times, even overpassed a little early on. Still, good flow to the offense. That helped him conserve energy for the long game. “I loved the way he played the first half,” Scott said regarding Kobe’s mix of aggressiveness and playmaking. Kobe also did a good job helping his bigs out on the boards. He needed just 3 boards going into the fourth to pull that triple-double off as he already had 11 assists at that point. He had his fingers on a defensive board that went out of bounds in regulation that would have had the triple-double then. He finally got the boards in OT to get his 20th career triple-double. When he rebounds like that, the Lakers have always been tough defensively. I’d love to see more of that, but that ain’t easy. This was an amazingly brilliant game for anyone, but someone his age? To create, score, board and defend like he did tonight? Wow. Amazing. People will probably take for granted what he just did, I’m sure, because they do that with Kobe…but that was an unreal game for his age coming off those injuries. “It’s 24/7 in terms of maintenance and therapy and taking care of my body. When I say it’s around the clock, it’s around the clock,” Kobe said. I will always remember young Kobe icing down and taking care of his body at an early age. He wouldn’t have pulled off the 30K and 6K without that focus to take care of himself. Offensively, hopefully, they can build off this. “That’s one thing about Kobe. If you move, he will find you,” Antawn Jamison said after the game. Jamison had some offensive chemistry with others when he was here with his crafty cuts off ball. The Lakers have struggled to get that in their offense, with guys mostly standing around when Kobe iso’s. There was more fluidity early. Kobe said the guys shooting with confidence early on opened up the game for him later. Late in the game you saw that iso, slowdown again where we need a little more creativity to mix things up. Kobe did find Nick for a huge three in OT after collapsing the D on an early offense iso attack. Lots of work still on that end, but the Lakers got the defensive stops they needed with Hill’s defensive presence in OT. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 11-24 shooting (0-1 from three, 9-13 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 12 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He hit Boozer on the two-man game for the pick-and-pop jumper. Great D, jumping off his man onto another then taking a charge on the perimeter. He threw an outlet away. He found Boozer for an elbow jumper. He hit Lin for the corner three. He looked to pass, didn’t have an open teammate so he sank a wing turnaround with a man on him. He jab-stepped to lose his man and nail a baseline pull-up. He faced up in the post and sank a bank from the left side. He had a shot stripped as he was about to go up, he recovered it and sank the three with the shotclock low instead. He passed up an open jumper to hit Boozer for an open jumper on the weakside. He was nearly stripped, recovered it and no-looked to Boozer under the hoop for a layup. Sensational behind-the-back pass to Hill cutting down the lane for a dunk as Kobe worked the high post. He attacked and drew FTs in the paint, he made both. He had 10 points, 8 assists and 4 boards in the half. Second Half: He attacked and wanted the foul on the missed layup. He found Wes for a baseline jumper for his 6K assist. He hit Hill on a cut for FTs next time down. He missed a turnaround jumper from the post. He missed a turnaround badly, looking to pass (we still scored off it). He sank a pull-up with his toes on the three line working off the high screen. He missed a three on one end and didn’t drive his man off the three line in transition on the other to give up a three. His pass to Davis was picked off in the paint. He missed a wing three, his man hit one on him on the other end. He missed a sideline jumper short. He attacked down the lane to his left, drew a whistle and banked in the short And-1 before going down, he made the FT. He iso’d and drew FTs on the reach, he made both. He iso’d at the end of the quarter and hit Price for the open three for his 11th assist. He attacked baseline, was blocked, got it back and drew FTs, he made one. He pushed out a board and missed a layup wanting a foul. He swatted a bigman from behind on the other end, saved a score. He posted up and sank the turnaround in the paint. He crossed over his man badly to lose him, then sank the And-1 pull-up jumper on the baseline over the fallen defender, looking ticked at the refs for a no call a few seconds earlier when he was nearly pushed over, he missed the FT with 3 minutes left. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He pushed out an outlet, went inside out on a Euro-step to lose his man and score the layup. He crossed over to lose the defender, drew the D and hit Nick for the open wing three, huge make with 1:32. He missed a wing pull-up jumper on iso. He attacked off the Boozer screen, sliced through the D and drew FTs at the rim with 35 seconds left down 1, he made just one again. He attacked the paint hard, took contact and lost the ball, no call as the defender was vertical on that, OT. Overtime: He iso’d, spun and drew FTs on a tough baseline turnaround, he missed the first short again and made the next. He got tapped on a floater that rattled in and out after a great move to get in the lane. He missed a turnaround on iso in the post. He iso’d and sank an And-1 elbow jumper (might have been a hip push on that foul, hard to see it as Kobe was stepping back at the same time), he made the FT. He iso’d and drilled the wing turnaround, walking down court a few steps like a bad ass.

Lin -- -- Quiet game as Kobe was doing more of the table setting for everyone with the 8 assists in the first half. Lin wasn’t able to score efficiently. He got some FTs late in OT to pad his scoring a little, but prior to that he was in on what was kind of the dagger play for the Raptors. JHill blocked a shot that went to Lin, who pushed it out and scored to give the Lakers an 8-point lead (that could have been just a 4-point lead for the Lakers and anyone’s game at that point). Some offense/defense subs by Scott down the stretch, but he went with Lin for all of the OT. Asked about the difference closing the game tonight versus previous games, Lin hit the nail on the head: “I think we got some key defensive stops,” he said. “If you looked at what really sparked us in overtime, it was trying to limit them to one shot. Not every possession, but a lot of possessions, making it tough, making them finish over us versus getting open, easy looks.” He said he never found his rhythm offensively, but said that’s the way it goes some nights. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-11 shooting (1-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He missed an elbow jumper. He missed a wing three. Nice help on a defensive board to save his big (need more of that from our guards), but he missed a drive pushing it out in transition. He sank a corner three off the Kobe feed. He attacked baseline and couldn’t power in a layup. He missed a three up against the shotclock. Second Half: He showed the ball on a layup and was easily swatted, layup the other way. He missed a wide open wing three. Nice reach on a big to swipe a ball. He bounced a pass to Boozer in transition for a layup. He hit a long wing jumper, toes on the three line on Kobe’s kickout. He pushed up a steal in transition but couldn’t get to the rim, getting stripped. Not close on a long three straight away. Overtime: He pushed out the Hill rejection and scored a huge bucket in transition to give the Lakers an 8-point lead with 1:20 left. He was fouled on an inbounds pass with a minute left, he made both FTs. Up 5, he was fouled again with 41 seconds left, he made both FTs. Dumb And-1 foul with 9 seconds left.

Hill -- -- Just a huge difference for the Laker D when we can get our bigmen to be effective in the paint versus getting scored on all the time. Defensively, not enough shot altering by Hill early on. The Laker bigs just weren’t altering much on their challenges. With how we funneled and played the screens, you’ve got to have bigs that can do that. In overtime, that changed for the Lakers and Hill as he came up big with two rejections on layup attempts. That was the difference maker defensively. That’s what the Lakers have been lacking from him. Instead of getting scored on over and over, we had someone making a stand. That’s why you get the W, with stronger D. Hill was hitting his jumper early on from his favorite spot at the top of the key. He nearly had a double-double in the first half, good effort out of the gates and finishing strong. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting (4-5 from the line) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 3 blocks and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He iso’d and worked his way into a hook shot for the Lakers first score. He grabbed a Lin missed jumper in a crowd for a putback jumphook. He blocked a drive but couldn’t control it. He missed a hook in the paint, off balance on this one. He swished a jumper from the top of the key. He dunked when Kobe found him off the behind-the-back pass as Hill cut down the lane. He sank another jumper from the top of the key in early offense. He choked a point-bank putback layup. He missed a jumphook in the lane. He missed a putback jumper. He had 10 points and 7 boards in the half. Second Half: He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He drew FTs on the Kobe feed, he made both. He gave up an And-1 layup on the other end on the challenge. Wow, he faced up, up-faked, blew past his man baseline and reversed an And-1 in a crowd of defenders, he made the FT. He drew FTs crashing the offensive glass, he made one. Overtime: He swatted a guard and controlled it. He rejected another shot badly and it went to Lin who scored on the break. He beat the press and outlet to Wes for a dunk, wow.

Boozer -- -- He didn’t play in the OT as we went with Wes at PF alongside Hill who finally decided to play big. That worked out well. Kobe was looking for him early and often. Boozer led the Lakers in scoring in the first half with 12 points on 11 shots. Defensively, we just have no presence with him out there. If we don’t have a shotblocker on the floor with him, opponents no they can get whatever they want. The Lakers will probably continue doing what the Bulls did with Booze and not playing him a lot in close games down the stretch. “We had our hands ready. Kobe was playmaking…it gave us a chance to eat early,” Boozer said. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-15 shooting to go with 9 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: No help at all on a switch to give up an open jumper. He missed a layup on a drive. He sank a wing jumper off the two-man game with Kobe. He grabbed an offensive board and swished the baseline jumper. He sank an elbow jumper. He missed a runner way short, just enough hustle back in transition to prevent a score to his man. He missed a long step-back jumper. He swished a wide open jumper off the Kobe feed. Kobe found him with a no-looker for a layup. He missed a jumper. He blew a dunk off a great Kobe feed. He tipped in a Hill putback miss at the buzzer. He had 12 points on 6-11 shooting and 3 boards. Second Half: He missed an open 16-footer straight away to start the quarter. He scored a layup off the bounce pass from Lin in transition. He scooped up a loose ball and scored under the hoop. Nice high-low to Sacre for the jumphook. He attacked down the lane, ball-faked to freeze the D and he scored the layup. No challenge on guard penetration on the other end. Horrible flat angle pass to the weakside, layup the other way (missing Pau here).

Johnson -- -- He threw up a couple of airballs early in the third quarter, but he got a kind bounce on a big three in OT. He scored 7-points in OT coming up big as our PF while we sat Boozer. We may see more of that to give the Lakers spacing down the stretch offensively, but a much more mobile defender that can’t be attacked as easily as Boozer. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-11 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He sank a catch and shoot wing jumper off the handoff. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. He posted up against a smaller man and scored easily. Second Half: He missed a runner. He airballed a baseline jumper. He swished a baseline jumper off the Kobe feed. He airballed a sideline three. He nearly jumped over a man on a recovery, but fouled him for FTs. Overtime: Kind bounce on a wing three with 3 minutes left in OT. He dunked off the pushout and outlet from Hill. He missed a sideline three. Nice rejection of Lowry off a purposely missed FT, he was fouled and made both FTs.

Young -- -- Nick buried a huge three off a Kobe kickout with over a minute left in regulation. That was one of five threes he made (he got fouled on another). “I feel I had to get my swag back. I went in my closet, put on my leather jacket…” Nick joked. He got his first win at home this year. He was the first Laker to get 20 points off the bench this season. Nick plays off ball with Kobe pretty well. He’s used to doing that with point guards, so these two have more chemistry than people think. Good first stint keeping the offense going when the Laker starters sat. The Raptors started to trap him more off the screens to try to slow him down in the second half during this same rotation. Price isn’t much of a playmaker so that makes it a little tough on the offense, but a perfect opportunity for Nick to play more ball dominant. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-11 shooting (5-8 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He buried a corner three initiated off a Kobe drive and kick. He swished a wing three on a catch and shoot after popping free from his man. He grabbed a board, pushed it up and threw it away. He worked off the high screen and hit the jumper from the top of the key. He lost his man on the crossover between his legs, but missed the elbow pull-up. He stepped on the sideline pushing off, turnover. He pumped his man in the air and drew FTs behind the three line, he made two. He had 10 points on 3-24 shooting in 10 minutes. Second Half: He missed a tough hanging jumper. He airballed an open three. He nearly hit a tough off-balance wing jumper trying to draw a whistle that didn’t come. He drained a big three on a swing pass. He lost the ball getting trapped on a high screen. He iso’d and drained a three over his man. He missed a sideline three, popping out to take the pass. Wow, bogus foul call when his man jumped right into him while Nick was standing still and they gave the Raptors 2 FTs, huge with 2+ minutes left. He swished a huge three on the Kobe kickout with 1:32 left. Overtime: He was hammered on a throwdown attempt with 1:21 left in OT (good hard challenge, but it didn’t feel good), he made one of his FTs as he caught his breath.

Davis -- -- Not much of a game from Ed tonight. He wasn’t blocking shots or getting much garbage point production. We could have really tightened the screws on the Raptors had our bigs clamped down. You can see the difference it makes when you have someone playing like Hill did in OT. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 1-2 from the line to go with 6 boards and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He somehow drew FTs on a putback that looked like he was swatted out of bounds from behind, he made one. Second Half: He gave up a putback score. His man blew past him for a layup.

Price -- -- Very quiet game from Price except for a couple of big plays. The first was a three at the end of the third quarter on a Kobe kickout (I just don’t expect those to drop unlike someone like Farmar who nailed them consistently). The second and bigger play was a defensive stop with 13 seconds left. We subbed out Lin and let Price take Lowry, who iso’d. Lowry, in his attempt to get past Price, hooked him with his off arm and was whistled for the offensive foul. Huge stop. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He charged on a drive and dish. Second Half: He got lost and gave up a dunk to his man. He sank a wing three on the Kobe kickout at the end of the quarter. He drew a charge in early offense with good anticipation. He fouled a man shooting a three. He drew a hooking foul on iso on Lowry with 13 seconds left tied up.

Ellington -- -- Perfect role-player game from Ellington. He had limited minutes, just 11, and managed 10 points during that time. The Lakers don’t have any playmaking when he’s out there. We sit Kobe and tend to go with Nick creating on iso. For Ellington to get double digits off set plays and opportunities helps the bench tremendously. Price can be a trigger man with the passing versus the playmaker. Ellington has the green light to create or shoot off screens or take threes when open. The bench brought it with 8-13 shooting from behind the arc. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a wide open wing three in transition. He sank a pull-up baseline jumper. He saw some space and pulled up for the wing three. He swished a wing three coming off a screen to take the pass. Second Half: He missed an open elbow jumper. He swished a wing jumper. He missed a tough step-back wing three, not a great look.

Sacre -- -- Good two-way game from Sacre. He had a little more defensive presence for us earlier in the game when we were getting scored on easily in the paint. Offensively, he came up with a big And-1 score to tie the game up after we lost our lead. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and no fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: After getting scored on in his first defensive challenge against a guard, he swatted the next one out of bounds. He blocked his man but still gave up the putback score. Sloppy execution off the two-man game for a turnover. Second Half: He was blocked or fouled with no call on a layup attempt, he was swatted on the subsequent putback attempt. Not there in time on a guard to give up a three. He was fouled on a post-up attempt, turning and getting stripped, he made one FT. He hit the jumphook off the high-low from Boozer. Great job getting out on the break, grabbing a Price miss and hitting the And-1 jumphook, he was pumped on that and a big score to tie it up, he made the FT.

Scott -- -- Kobe setting up others early and the Lakers led 15-12 when the timeout came… Scott bought in Young and Davis for Boozer and Johnson with 4:40 left, Lakers still up 3… Sacre and Price in for Lin and Hill with 3 minutes left, Lakers still up 3… Kobe sat with 48 seconds left for Ellington... The Lakers led 27-24 after the first quarter, shooting 54%... He started a Sacre, Davis, Young, Ellington, Price unit… The Lakers led 37-30 off some SwaggyP scoring early in the quarter… Up 4, he sat Davis for Boozer… Wes in for Young, Lakers up 9… Kobe and Lin back in for Ellington and Price up 9… Lakers offense working well, but they are struggling to get good challenges in the paint on D. They are keeping the pace in their favor, no transition points for the Raptors… Lakers up 58-49 at the half. Raptors 1-11 from three and no fastbreak points, but 34 points in the paint… Lakers go scoreless and have their lead trimmed to just 3 in 2 minutes. Scott called a quick timeout… The Lakers pushed it back up to 8 to force a Raptor timeout… The Lakers were up 73-66 when Davis and Young came in for Johnson and Boozer… They were tied up 73-73 with 3 minutes left when Price came in for Lin, then Sacre for Hill a few seconds later… A 12-0 Raptor run before Kobe ended that with an And-1… The Lakers led 81-80 heading into the fourth… He started a Sacre, Davis, Young, Ellington, Price unit again… Raptors pulling out to a 6-point lead against the Laker second unit… Boozer in for Davis, Lakers down 3… Kobe back in tied 95-95 midway through the quarter. Lin back in for Price with 5:28 and the Lakers up 1… Up 1, Hill in for Sacre… Up 4 with 1:24, he sat Boozer for Wes for D, the brought Boozer back for offense… He sat Boozer and Lin for Price and Wes as Kobe shot FTs… Price got the stop. We subbed back in for offense, 13 seconds left, tie score… Kobe driving and no call at the end of regulation… Wes in at PF in OT… Got to love playing against the East…

And just damn Kobe, just damn. Greatness personified.

Thanks DB!

First game I've missed more than half of this season. Had to take brother to airport so got to listen to the game on the radio. What a joy it was! Maybe I should listen to the cast on the radio again if Lakers are going to continue to beat high ranking teams like Toronto.

Thanks DB

What will it take to have Hill and Davis play well defending the paint consistently. Since they are our only rim protectors (Boozer, Sacre and Johnson can't do this), they need to do their job for the defense to be effective

I'm still so excited that I can't sleep.

So glad I didn't turn the game off and stuck with it even though I thought I was going to have a heart attack!

Great team win!

thankks db, now onto the next match - hopefully, this boost the confidence of our players (finally being able to close out the match). OT wins build character.

We faced down the best in the East (so far), so our players must bear in mind that they do have what it takes to win games. They should focus on helping each other out rather than trying to just pad their own statistics.

Basketball is a team sport, and when the team clicks it's just so very nice to watch. Go Lakers!

WHAT I LIKED

Kobe's passing: Kobe showed not only good patience in drawing the D and great vision, but his timing in delivering the pass at the perfect time for the assists both inside and out was magnificent. He was under control the whole game, and it paid off for him when came time to score in OT.

Dropping back in the pick and roll: I'm not sure if there was an explicit adjustment or not, but it seemed the bigs were dropping back further in the pick and roll today and therefore able to do a better job containing the ballhandler and forcing the other team to shoot long twos. They still did some high hedges with some messy results, but still overall, it's a step in the right direction.

It also seemed that the Lakers made more of an effort to stay out on the shooters although on a couple of possessions their gambling instincts took over and they gave up wide open shots. If they can get just these two things right, then their defense will be much improved.

Nick Young's off-ball reads in crunchtime: Swaggy is not exactly known for his off-ball movement, but his decisions without the ball were a big part of the two huge threes late in the 4th and in overtime. The first one was in the 4th with a minute and a half to go when he sprinted over towards the baseline and called for the ball right went his man went to rotate to cover Hill as Kobe was driving- Kobe found him wide open and he knocked it down.

Also, the reason Wes was open on his 3 with 3 min left was because Nick ran over and delivered the timely back screen, and Lin made the right decision in delivering the pass instead of giving up and tossing it to Kobe. (Of course, big props to Wes for not hesitating and knocking it down in the clutch, even if it was a kind bounce.)

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

Price and Wes as "defensive stoppers": You can see from Byron's crunchtime substitutions that he thinks of these two as his defensive stoppers, and it worked out tonight. But while they make the occasional block / steal / drawn charge that can fool you into believing it, these guys are generally bad for the team defense. Don't believe me? Then go back and watch Lin dart deftly around most of the screens set on him in this game, and then watch these two get caught on or smash straight into every single one. (I know you Lin fanatics out there really want to make me a video of every defended PnR from these three during this game .) Also for every good defensive play they make, they wash it away with boneheaded defensive breakdowns and fouls. So if they aren't good defenders and aren't good offensive players, then why do they get so many minutes?

The minutes rotation: Still too many minutes for Kobe, 37 in regulation, almost playing the entire 1st quarter. Not enough minutes for Lin and Davis, even if it wasn't Ed's greatest game. No minutes for Clarkson.

Yeah, I noticed the team playing a more conservative defensive scheme today.

They were dropping back on pick and rolls, not doubling on bigs posting up, and sticking to shooters on the perimeter. Very similar to the scheme that Portland played with last season. I hope they stick to this. They'll sill be a very mediocre defensive team, but at least it won't be historically bad.

When DB wrote so many lines on a player, it had to be very good or special night for that player. Congrats for the triple doubles and the 30/6/6 grandmiles Kobe!.

Insightful Analysis

Maybe the most important question could be the following

Team has the potential talent to win at a greater rate.

It has been proven that they don't have (yet) the required mental toughness and focus (consistently) to win consistently. They have the opportunity to play/learn with best (Kobe) and led by somebody who know/have done what it takes to win multiple rings.

If they can sleep well after a defeat, this will be a short stay in Lakerland

If a defeat makes them have sleepless nights, they will have a legitimate chance to be called a winner

Lakers appear to be 1 legitimate rim-protecting big to be a viable contender. IMHO, D12 has the raw talent, but not have the mental toughness or drive to be a winner. His current problems and production offensive deficiencies would have the LA media in a distracting frenzy
