Talking Trash and Getting After It… After Kobe hit a long shotclock-beating three in regulation, it looked like that might be a back breaker for the Spurs down 9 with under 2 minutes left. Just get a stop and run clock and the game is probably a W.

The Lakers didn’t get a stop, they didn’t get the subsequent rebound off the two missed FTs after that. It got worse from there, multiple turnovers, misses and made threes from the Spurs. They coughed and sputtered and the Spurs pounced. Had Manu not choked a FT in the final seconds, this game goes down as a loss.

Fast forward to the end of overtime. The Lakers trailed by 1, the clock was running out and Jeremy Lin dumped the ball into Nick Young’s hands. Very hot hands.

Nick rose up with a man on and drilled very difficult three with 7 seconds left to give the Lakers the 112-110 lead and the eventual game winner. It was his sixth three of the game, and one of the best three shooting games of the season by the Lakers.

“I’m just being me at the end of the day you. From yesterday at practice, Kobe talking all that trash inspired me today,” Young said.

Great win by the team. To be fair Tony Parker was coming back from an injury and Kawhi Leonard was not in uniform. (To be fair, the Lakers have four guys out with injuries, as well.)

Entertaining game. Kobe moved the ball well as he faced extra defenders all night. Jeremy Lin looked more like himself. Carlos Boozer had a strong double-double off the bench. How about the game ending with Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan going to the floor on the sideline after a loose ball with time running out? Both teams were getting after it and both seemingly had the win yanked from their grasp.

Kobe -- -- The Spurs were doubling and sending help to him all game long. That would limit Kobe’s scoring, but not the Laker offense. He would set the table for others, including a series of scores for his bigs in the fourth quarter as we made Kobe the PG to close the game. That move by Scott would nearly backfire as Kobe had a couple of turnovers in the final couple of minutes. He would sink what looked like a killer three with a couple minutes left, but things fell apart after that. “We made some mistakes, they picked up their pressure and they made some shots,” Kobe said. He didn’t make another shot, but he would continue to find his bigs for layups and scores with some superb playmaking. Very active game from him. I loved seeing the Kobe, Young, Lin combo in there together. People worry about chemistry problems, but give them time together. They haven’t had it. The Lakers certainly looked like someone lit a fire in them tonight. The team looked much better with Kobe able to slip in some practice and light a fire under the guys. They certainly played with spirit on the road. Asked about it afterward, “We can all criticize my style of leadership all day long. We really can. It’s uncomfortable. It’s whatever you want to say, but I’ve been doing that since high school. We play this game to win championships and I have five of them,” Kobe said, adding “It’s worked pretty well throughout my career. I’ve done alright with that.” It’s nothing new. What’s new is he’s had seasons where he can practice with the team consistently and where he can’t (going back a few years ago when Phil had to rest him one season…and again this season). He throttled up the intensity joining the team for practice and was tired after playing 40 and running as PG quite a bit. Looks like he’ll pass MJ in the next one. Huge Kobe chants from Laker fans after the game. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-22 shooting (1-4 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 9 assists, 4 steals, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was -1. The Action: He swiped the ball from Parker on help D. He missed a long wing jumper. He was fouled on an elbow jumper, he made both FTs. He dribbled to his left and swished the pull-up wing jumper. He was plowed over on another wing jumper for FTs, he made one. He got tapped on a tip in attempt after missing a wing jumper. He went behind his back to Boozer for the jumper. He threw a pass away, layup the other way. He scored a layup on an early offense post up. He missed an open two-for-one three straight away. He attacked an overplaying Manu and drew FTs with 10 seconds left, he made both. He had 9 points in the first quarter. He missed a wing jumper. He kicked to Wes for the three. He missed a tough elbow jumper. Aggressive post attack right after the catch and he scored a layup over the help D. He drew the D inside and kicked out to Wes for the corner three. He had 11 points in the half. Second Half: He sank an elbow jumper coming around a pindown and winding up free. He threw a wild pass out of bounds trying to hit a big. He sank a tricky 18-footer off the catch. He missed a chuck from three. He missed a corner jumper. He missed a pull-up jumper on iso. He grabbed a steal, pushed it up, took contact in the lane and just got tapped on an off-balance 15-footer, he made both FTs. He lost Manu and sank the baseline pull-up jumper. He drew the D and hit a cutting Boozer for a score. He drew a double, found Boozer again for a layup. He missed a turnaround from the wing. He drew the D and hit Hill for the layup. He called for the ball with 2 seconds left, got it and knocked down a long three to just beat the shotclock, wow, that might have been a backbreaker. He lost the handle on the perimeter with 1:32 left trying to pick it up and he dove to the floor to tie it up for a jumpball, he won it but we fumbled it away, Spurs hit a three. Horrible cross court pass, picked off with under a minute left and the Spurs hit a three. He missed a pull-up wing jumper after winding the clock down. Manu drove past him and drew a foul with 6.8 left to have a chance to take the lead (Manu missed one FT). He missed a corner jumper to try to win, dead straight, just too long. Overtime: He missed a wing three late in the shotclock, tough one to be forced into. He drew the D after taking an inbounds and spotted Hill cutting for a layup. He hit Hill on the two-man game for the jumper. He attacked the paint, drew the D and dumped it to Boozer under the hoop for a layup. He missed a fade in the lane. He missed a tough reverse through a crowd after a play busted.

Hill -- -- He had a defensive rebound on a FT and a high post pass both go out of bounds and off him after a review in the final two minutes. It seemed like anything that could go wrong for the Lakers during that stretch did go wrong. He came up with a couple of big OT scores when Kobe found him open (one on a nice cut by Hill). He also regained a big offensive possession battling on the glass. So he made up for his part in those late-game miscues. Good experience for Hill being called up in a hostile environment in OT. Defensively, he had some moments on iso against Hill in the post. He nearly killed me with a double leaving a three shooter open in the first half. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-16 shooting to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He bullied his way down the lane and missed a jumphook, should have gone glass. He missed a long jumper over Bonner (take him in the post). He grabbed a Kobe missed tip and scored in traffic. He missed a one-hander from 6 feet out all alone. Nice D on iso on Duncan to force a brick in the post. Second Half: He missed a 17-footer. He sank a wing jumper in transition. He sank a 20-footer off Price’s drive and kick. Bad double in the post (as DB yells “nooooo”) to give up a wide open three after a switch. He missed a layup trying to power it in, got it back and was stripped out of bounds. He missed an open wing jumper. He missed a short one in the paint. He hustled in transition, scooped up a loose ball and dunked, great effort. He scored a layup off the Kobe feed out of a timeout. Overtime: Great effort on the glass to regain a Laker possession. Kobe found him on the inbounds sequence for a layup. He drained an open jumper from his spot off the two-man game with Kobe.

Davis -- -- Quiet game from Ed aside from some nice passes. He got blocked more than he blocked others tonight. Boozer again closed the game for the most part. I’m not sure Ed even scored the 2 points he got credit for. It looked like a Spur may have tipped it in for him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 6 boards (4 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a putback attempt. He missed a layup attempt out of a timeout. Illegal screen, turnover. He was rejected badly under the hoop in a crowd. Second Half: He took a pass in the lane from Kobe, drew the D and kicked to Wes for the open three. He’ll get credit for a tip in attempt but it looked like a Spur was responsible.

Johnson -- -- His minutes may be overlooked in this one but without Wes heating up from the perimeter, that first unit would have dug itself into another hole after the bench bailed them out. Wes picked up where Swaggy left off in that second quarter draining threes and being a threat. We’ve got to have one of Price/Johnson step up every game with that unit. Problem is, they won’t. So give Wes his props tonight. He gave them exactly what they needed. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting (3-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Not close on an off-balance long jumper, horrible shot selection. He attacked off the three line and hit a good look at a 16-footer. He sank a three off the Kobe feed. He drilled the corner three off the Kobe kickout (love him turning to the bench fired up on that one). He missed a layup cutting off the post next time down. He had 8 points on 3-5 shooting. Second Half: Long wing jumper to start the half. He sank a sideline three on the kickout from Davis.

Price -- -- Once again, the Laker offense with Price struggled out of the gates. They trailed 10-0 quickly as the Spurs could defend this lineup easily. When Price sat after 5 minutes, you could see both the pace of the game pickup and the Laker scoring. They dug their way out of a hole to tie it up by the end of the first. Wes stepped into the void which helps this lineup tremendously. You can’t have both Price/Wes clanking or it makes it harder on the spacing and harder on everyone. Scott limited his minutes, thankfully. It’s painful to watch him be a non-threat out there offensively and bog down the offense for that unit. Later in the game, you could see Kobe looking him off and looking for the hotter hand in Wes who was a little less open, but a threat. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting from three to go with 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a wing three. He fouled Bonner on a wild close out on a three. He missed a wide open three when the D collapsed. He swiped a horrible post entry pass, then threw it away and fouled on the other end after having a mismatch against a bigman. Second Half: He attacked and went behind his back to Hill for the open jumper. He missed a three up against the shotclock. He barely hit rim on a wide open sideline three.

Young -- -- “I’ve been wanting to hit one of those for a while since I’ve been in the league,” Nick said. Nick was scorching it from distance so it was fitting he drilled the game winner in OT. You can tell he loves playing in L.A. and playing with Kobe (What? Impossible!). He doesn’t back down and isn’t afraid of the big shot. We slid him to SG for the close and Kobe to the PG. Not ideal, but with Wes having a hot hand, this is how Scott decided to mix it up to close. That last play was a busted sequence and Nick bailed the Lakers out. In Kobe and Nick you’ve got two of the better tough shot makers in the league. Swaggy could talk about his shot for an hour or two after the game. Hope someday he can have a postgame presser after winning a championship. His hand wasn’t wrapped tonight for the first time since returning. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 9-14 shooting (6-9 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Nice recovery to his man and it forced a pass out of bounds. He sank an early offense wing three. He swished a long three on a Kobe kickout. He attacked down the lane, expected a whistle that didn’t come and bricked the scoop shoot then picked up a tech. He swished another long three and wanted the foul. He swished a three off the throwback play called/set up by Lin. Next time down he called his own number and drained another three. He missed his sixth three attempt next time down. He had 15 points in the half on 5-7 shooting. Second Half: He attacked from the wing and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He swished a pull-up wing jumper on a two-for-one sequence. He set his man up for a foul on a three attempt, perfect timing on Nick on that play with 3.7 left in the quarter, he made all three FTs. He wheeled around a screen and swished the wing fade with a man on. He attacked right, wild miss and no call. He missed an open wing three. Overtime: He sank a step-back 15-footer to start the OT. Wow, looked like a great block on Bonner’s drive and he was called for a foul. He airballed a three, forced to a bad shot just to beat the shotclock on an inbounds. Insane 30-foot three to beat the shotclock off a horrible offensive sequence with 7 seconds left and it goes. Boom.

Lin -- -- I kind of think this is what should be an average game for Lin. The Lakers let Lin play more of his game when he came in after 5 minutes in the first (either that or he just did it) and it looked perfectly fluid with Kobe out there. We ran a lot more mix of high screens for him to attack off, and he also pushed the pace at times. He was calling plays, making sure he found Nick when he was hot. It just doesn’t seem that hard to make this work. He needs to step up like this and Scott needs to allow it. When he made a mistake tonight, he didn’t disappear. The team didn’t disappear tonight. “When the shots weren’t falling and we probably could have caved and would have caved in the past,” Lin said, “we were able to find a way to get stops and do the dirty things and do the tough things, so, you know, we are not soft.” They responded tonight and he’s right in the past they haven’t. They were playing with fight and spirit. Lin was playing looser and more aggressive. Asked about the trash talking, “It was really blown out of proportion. That’s what our practices look like. Sometimes it’s him on the losing end and us talking. I thought we played pretty hard for a team full of toilet paper,” he joked. He seemed a little irked that he or Ronnie wasn’t out there to close the game. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-14 shooting (2-3 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 8 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a good look at an open wing jumper (that was a high screen play set up for him to attack early in the game). Great job taking a charge against Duncan on the other end on help D to get a stop. He attacked the lane and hit the step-back jumper. Quick attack off the Kobe screen in early offense with speed and he scored a layup. Nice feed to Kobe who was fronted in the post for an early offense layup (Lin is very good at making that type of pass over the D). Nice recovery on his man who attacked past him and he swatted the shot out of bounds. He attacked and whipped a pass to Sacre for the easy one. He attacked left off a high screen and swished the pull-up jumper. He got backdoored for a layup on the other end. He swished a quick-fire three in early offense. He found Young for the three. He was called for a charge on a baseline attack (could have been a blocking call as the help defender was still moving). He called for the throwback play and hit Young for the three. He missed a hanging jumper in the lane. He attacked and threw it away, dunk the other way. He swished a wing three next time down behind a screen (confident shot). He doubled Duncan in the post and drew an offensive foul (Kobe came over as he was subbed out and had some good words for him). He had 12 points on 5-7 shooting and 5 assists. Second Half: He attacked, lost the D on a spin move under the hoop and dumped it to Sacre for the layup (Lin had a layup himself). He probed into the lane off a high screen and hit the hanging shot over a big. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He worked the two-man game with Boozer and found him for the short one in the lane. Great D smothering Parker on the drive and forcing a travel before a kickout. He missed a good look at a wing pull-up jumper from about 13 feet out, got to knock those down. He attacked from the wing and drew the whistle, he missed both FTS, uggh. He crossed over to lose his man but couldn’t hit the long jumper. He attacked in early offense and was rejected by the help D. He drew a moving screen call on the other end to get a stop. He attacked and was stripped. He was blocked out of bounds on a two-on-one layup attempt in transition. Overtime: He was shoved to the ground on a defensive board and drew the foul with 30 seconds left. Nice assist to Swaggy, lol, for the three. “I didn’t realize there was that little time,” Lin said about dumping that pass out to Swaggy.

Boozer -- -- If Boozer wanted to boost his value, he’d not only accept this new role, he’d run with it. He’s looked much better starting off against second units and even finishing against the starters. We’ve made some adjustments with what we do defensively, too, but then we are getting more effort out of him at times. When he didn’t get back in transition on one play, Scott called timeout and rested him. He and Kobe were working the two-man game a bit in crunch time and did a pretty good job carving up the Spurs D. The bench scored 61 points tonight. Huge. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-12 shooting to go with 13 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He swished an open jumper off the behind-the-back pass from Kobe. He missed a 16-footer on a kickout. He faked, attacked the rim and missed. He swished a 16-footer straight away off the pass from Nick. He missed a layup on the break and wanted the foul. Second Half: Nice job to pull down an offensive board in a crowd and he called a timeout when trapped. He worked the two-man game with Lin, took a pass in the paint and scored. He took a pass from Lin, was blocked, got it back and scored the layup. He swished an elbow jumper flashing to the ball when Kobe drew a crowd. Great reaction to reject a layup on help D. He then sagged off on Manu next time down and gave up a three to cut the lead to 4. He scored a layup when Kobe drew a double and found him. Overtime: He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Kobe.

Ellington -- -- The bench killed it tonight. Ellington was the only one in the second unit not to score. When we are talking about good three shooting nights for the Lakers, he’s usually in on it. Not tonight. The Lakers made 12-24 from three, most of those came in the first half. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 13 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed an open wing three set up by Lin. He tripped over a ball and it led to a breakaway score. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Sacre -- -- He did a good job on the boards and managed to score a couple of hoops around the rim when Lin set him up. It’s not natural chemistry, for sure, but it’s a start. We sat Sacre after Lin dumped the ball to him to go iso against Duncan. That was the right time to pull the plug by Scott. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 steal and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He hit a 4-footer off the drive and dish from Lin. Soft challenge on Bonner giving up a jumphook in his face. Second Half: He scored a layup when Lin lost the D and dumped it in his lap. Nice hands stealing a pass in the lane to save a hoop. He missed an iso jumper when we dumped the ball to him to go to work against Duncan, not a great possession.

Scott -- -- This game actually felt like a little progress. Of course, we still have some of the same issues… The Lakers quickly getting worked out of the gates, missing long two’s on one end while the Spurs are making open threes or layups. The Lakers trailed 10-0 after just 2:28. Scott called a timeout… The Lakers were down 12-5 when Price sat with 7 minutes left for Lin… Lin attacking off screens and the Lakers cut it to 19-13 when the timeout came. He brought in Young and Boozer for Davis and Johnson… Sacre in for Hill… Second unit lineup with Lin and the Lakers offense comes together again to retake a 23-21 lead… The Lakers were tied 25-25 after the first quarter… He started a Sacre, Boozer, Young, Ellington, Lin lineup… Young on fire. Lin doing a good job orchestrating the offense to help take advantage of this… Up 1 after an Ellington turnover and Spurs breakaway and Scott called a timeout (his bigs didn’t get back in that one)… He came back with the Hill, Davis, Johnson, Kobe and Lin lineup. Why bring Wes back when Swaggy is on fire? (Thankfully, Wes would catch fire a little later and hit a couple of threes himself in Young’s place)... Tied 46-46 and Price is back in… The Lakers led 54-50, good job by Wes in this stretch to help that poor shooting starting lineup. The D was all over Kobe and he found Wes who made them pay. The Lakers shot 9-14 from three in the half with Young, Lin and Johnson… With both Wes and Hill hitting (a combined 9-points on jumpers), the starters got some perimeter help to make the Spurs pay. Timeout Spurs, Lakers up 8… He brought in Boozer, Lin and Young for Davis, Price and Johnson with 4:19 left, Lakers up 2… Sacre in for Hill shortly later… He sat Kobe with 1:21 left, Lakers up 5. Ellington in… The Lakers led 86-75 heading into the fourth quarter… He started a Sacre, Boozer, Young, Ellington, Lin lineup… The Lakers led 90-83 when Kobe returned for Ellington with 6:53. He brought in Hill for Sacre… Wes in for Lin with a couple minutes left… Big out-of-bounds call going the Spurs way with 1:45 left, Lakers up 9... The Spurs go on an 8-0 run as the Lakers turn the ball over multiple times. Timeout, Lakers up by 1 with just 45 seconds left… Tie score, Lakers ball with 6.8 seconds left and Scott called a timeout after we tried to inbounds. He went with the same lineup offensively. We missed a jumper and the Spurs got it back with 1.2 left… He went with Price instead of Boozer. They got the stop… Overtime: He went with a Hill, Boozer, Johnson, Young, Kobe lineup. No Lin… He called a timeout with 1 minute left, down by 1 to sub in Lin. Hope he didn’t ice him leaving him on the bench to start the O. “I thought Kobe was exhausted,” Scott said. Kobe could have used the help much earlier… We got a huge three by Nick off a busted offensive sequence with 7.4 left. Lakers up 2. We fell into that score. Timeout Spurs… He kept same lineup with Lin in, Boozer out. Lakers got the stop and the W… The Lakers had 27 assists on 44-96 shooting… On Kobe’s trash talking that the media ran with. “You guys make that such a big deal and it’s not. That happens almost every practice,” Scott said. “I love seeing it. It has the guys going at it a little more.”…

Always like to read your post.
Re, Scott needs to allow Lin to take the charge on a period like that first quarter. That pulls up from a big hole, otherwise we might lose every thing already. But give a lot of credits to all players' hard work. The win from the toughness.

I didn't keep track of the numbers, but I'm pretty sure Jordan Hill wasn't a -35 tonight.

Great win. Price has got to sit. He does nothing out there. Clarkson at least has the potential to learn and improve, Price is what he is.

Yeah, I thought it was a case of winning despite Byron's best efforts. I mean the team didn't have to go into a 10-0 hole to start with. Kobe didn't have to have his legs run out from under him. The best performing players didn't have to play so few minutes. The end of the game didn't need to be so difficult.

This team is more talented than people give them credit for, especially on the offensive end. Just wish they had a bit more help from the sidelines.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the win and the good moments as much as anyone. It's just hard to see certain things on the court and not have sudden flashes of anger.

Wow, what an unexpected win. Always nice to beat Spurs!

All we need to have more of that is to replace Price...

only thing i disagree with is giving props to BScott. he is a turrible coach. going no PG for as long as he did reeks of the same stubborn, vehement idiocy he has shown this whole season. he practically gave the game away in regulation--by all rights the lakers should've lost in regulation. i think one manu ginobili FT was the difference.

Aside from the last 2 minutes in 4th quarter, I thought he did a pretty good job. Gotta give credit when the credit is due.

Thanks db, great win by the team. My only worry is bs keeping his current lineup even though it's rather obvious that price isn't right for the first unit...

The Price for Clarkson makes it a better deal.

Best part of the night, interviews of and with Swaggy P! He just do what he do - lmao!

JLin might be disappointed he wasn't he, but he is not yet ready for Prime Time seeing that he couldn't close on a few consecutive possessions late in the 4th quarter to maintain/extend the lead.

On Swaggy P's last shot, he did not see Johnson for a layup and gave it up to Nick (thankfully). Even more so being that he did not realize that he Hama's a very short clock

Does JHill have the ability to drive the paint from the top of the key to dunk? Several times late in the 4th quarter, there was nobody in the paint. Hopefully he will learn how to close during Prime Time against elite teams that defend for the full 24 seconds while giving maximum effort. When the team is struggling, the PG needs to settle the team down and get good possessions.

BScott made the right decision to have Kobe play PG late in the game until he got tired. JLin probably get the chance against lessor teams (Baby Wolves & depleted Pacers) to show some signs that he is the right PG for the Lakers in the future

Good Jon, DB

Coming back from the 0-10 scoreboard in the first qt. was big.

Team played well as a team - fed the hot hands.

Got a bit stagnant the last 2 mins of regulation, but showed some heart and growth by not choking in OT.

Nice nice win.

We watched the first half and were surprised the Spurs looked so bad.
