I was under the impression we could spend freely...and just needed to find a team willing to sell their pick.

I'm pretty sure there is a $3m or so cap on cash considerations that you can use on picks. I could be wrong.

RE: Rondo - presumably Dallas got his Bird rights, and can/will offer him the max next season.

We can offer him max too...but less than what Dallas can offer him?

They can offer him a 5th year, and 7.5% raises over what others can offer (4.5%). I doubt Cuban wants a maxed out Rondo for 5 years. Hell, he broke up a championship team immediately after the celebration. He's going for it this season.

There is. 3 million total per season. Was per transaction last CBA.

How much can we get for $3 million? Could we buy a late first rounder with that much cash?

If we spent $1.5m to buy Clarkson's pick, I would assume that's all we can give in straight cash considerations (about 1.5m).

We bought clarksons pick during the draft. The 3 million re-set in July.

We can spend $3 mil the entire season. That is for buying picks, adding cash to deals.

I think that some cash was sent out on the trade for Lin, but not sure on the exact amount.

The amount of Cash that can be used to facilitate trades increments slowly each year under the current CBA.

97. Can cash be included as part of a trade package?

2011-12 $3.0 million
2012-13 $3.1 million
2013-14 $3.2 million
2014-15 $3.3 million
2015-16 $3.4 million
2016-17 $3.5 million
2017-18 $3.6 million
2018-19 $3.7 million
2019-20 $3.8 million
2020-21 $3.9 million

It was Jeff Green and I would have laughed at that offer too if I was Ainge.

I'm trying to understand why we have no interest in sign and trading our free agent all-stars, or even trading them at deadline for some picks, yet we seem to have no issue with trading our picks for other team's soon to be FA's.

It's a bit mind boggling to be honest. What if some idiot had given Rondo 18 M a year? We shouldn't match and lose the top 5 pick (we'd be too good for the bottom 5 with RR) and the Hou pick for 4 months of Rondo. Really not digging the undervaluing of our picks.

It's how we got some depth around the core of Kobe/Gasol/Odom that won rings. Bynum, Turiaf, Sasha, Farmar and Luke were all our picks . We need value them.

I'm happy Rondo is in Dallas. That Houston pick is an asset. Even if every 3rd 1st round pick is a good one, you still keeping playing the draft pool. Lakers need to stop the quick fixes.

I think those guys were trash to be honest with you. It's why I don't value the picks much (Bynum wasn't trash but he was also a higher pick which does have more value). And Turiaf was gone before the team won any titles. I'd much rather have a Rondo than have the next Sasha. Players like Gasol and Odom were picked up in trades, not drafts, and they were far more important when the team was on top.

I know I'm more pessistic than most over draft picks but the only pick I remember being really excited about besides Bynum was Javaris Crittenton. We all saw what kind of player he turned into.

I'm surprised there aren't more people complaining that Mitch is wasting the end of Kobe's career by not pulling off this trade.

I'm convinced everyone in the Laker organization, including Kobe, knows he's not getting another ring and the huge extension and hiring of Byron Scott was to minimize the internal grumbling.

I don't believe the Lakers are going to take any more big swings to try and pair Kobe with any expensive, established stars. The real rebuilding effort starts after he retires and we may not land a big name star until we've established a good young nucleus.

I remember Kobe in the offseason praising the front office for going after the big free agents. I'm not sure he has given up on the idea of getting another ring.
