Apparently he insisted on a starting role for any team that wanted to sign him. Obviously his release didn't inspire him to turn over a new leaf, ego-wise.
It's a move that will help them on D but hurt them on O.
Most of what Howard and Harden create is off the fact that Houston likes to spread the floor really well. Not sure how smith helps there. He can pass sure. He can board. But they wanted CB in the summer to spread that floor well.
That said when you have talent like Howard, ariza, smith, and Beverly - you can go places defensively. If Houston really focused on it, they could be the best team on D in the league.

He won't hurt the offense. We will use him just like we used Jones last season.
Well, this is assuming he doesn't take all those dumb shots.

Their defensive rating is 2nd currently so they're already one of the best defensive teams right now. I was surprised when I'd read that.

I'll say this, if this works out for them, they are just one more team that is in the way of the clippers (and maybe even spurs) and i can definitely live with that.

I hate the Rockets more than either of those teams. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

Yeah, sure, you can start . . . . . . . . until Terrence Jones is healthy _________________ "A metronome keeps time by using a Ringo"

Smith is like Jones on steroids. He brings everything Jones does, but can defend and is a better rebounder.
Smith at $2m is a bargain. Little risk for houston and I agree with Dreamshake. He is going to help this team. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

I think you confuse 2015 Smith with 2012 Smith. Maybe a change of scenery will be good, but there is a reason Detroit released Smith. They felt paying him for nothing was better than paying him to be on the court. That is faint praise. _________________ "A metronome keeps time by using a Ringo"

No. I've seen 2015 Smith, and he can still do the things Jones can do (grab open boards, cut to the rim for open dunks), and the additional things I've mentioned.
The Pistons also created extra cap space by waiving him under the stretch provision.

What do you think Detroit's goals are in all this? As in, what do you think is the best way for them to get better given their current situation.
It'd be a draft pick and re-sign Greg Monroe (although i've read they might throw a chunk at draymond), they aren't competing for the next few years anyway.
There are tons of teams with overpaid players, but getting rid of said player costs stuff (see Jeremy Lin), teams don't take on bad contracts without receiving additional compensation, so they just decided that their cap space (since they aren't competing) was worth less than their future assets (draft picks), for a "rebuilding" team, there's an argument that hitting the salary floor when the new money rolls in will be a challenge in itself.
All it really implies about Smith is he was overpaid (but we all knew that the moment he signed that contract), that teams around the block including teams like the Spurs were after him, really just confirms that his issue was his price point. _________________ I believe everything the media tells me except for anything for which I have direct personal knowledge, which they always get wrong
