Rookie Rankings Week 10

10. TARIK BLACK, C, LA LAKERS: Let’s give the big guy some credit. Despite playing nice backup minutes to Dwight Howard, he was discarded when the Rockets upgraded their roster. Since latching on with the Lakers, he is throwing around his wide body in similar fashion, averaging 9.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.8 fouls in 18.8 minutes. Despite the change of scenery, his season PER is a respectable 14.03. LAST WEEK: NR

Tarik Black Showing He's a Keeper for Los Angeles Lakers
Per Serena Winters of Lakers Nation, Byron Scott says he’ll keep playing the new arrival as long as he keeps delivering:

Quote:
In addition to supplanting Sacre, the newest Laker is also eating into starting center Jordan Hill’s minutes. Hill is averaging 25.8 minutes in January, compared to 32.3 in November. Black's role often entails being used in a big frontcourt second unit alongside Carlos Boozer at power forward, with stretch 4 Ryan Kelly shifting to small forward.

The negative X-rays are a good sign, although he should still be considered day-to-day ahead of Wednesday's game against the Pelicans.

Tarik Black (right ankle sprain) will not play Wednesday vs. the Pelicans, and he is looking doubtful for Friday's game vs. the Spurs.

Black was seen leaving the arena on crutches after Monday's game, so this is no mild ankle sprain.
With Black out, look for Robert Sacre, Carlos Boozer (triceps contusion), and Ryan Kelly to pick up some additional minutes.

Look for the Lakers to be limited in their push-offs against the Pelicans.

Luckily we still have our R. Kelly's pump-fakes to fall back on!

I don't see nothing wrong with a little pump and grind.

I hope we gave him an MRI to be sure there is no internal non bone damage.

His game in 65 words or fewer: Black’s a solid defender and an even stronger rebounder, he creates offensive opportunities for himself thanks to his knack for grabbing boards, and he’s extremely efficient playing around the rim and off the ball. His best performance came January 9 against the Magic, when he scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and blocked a shot in just 17 minutes to help secure a Lakers victory.

Tarik definitely will miss the next two games.

I miss having Tarik in games to watch!!

I was so happy to hear during the game tonight that Black was walking on his own OK today!! That boy is tough (his bones and ligaments)...to get thru that bad of a twisted ankle without any serious damage is terrific!!

I miss him, too. But only missing 2 games with that bad of an ankle buckle is terrific!!
