I hate him, but it's Harden.

Prefer Klay.

Yeah, I like and prefer Klay, but I can't view a shooting guard who has to utilize a system of screens, and a heavy dosage of set-ups as the best shooting guard in the league. He's great at what he does. I've mentioned this before, his game is similar to Reggie Miller and Ray Allen. Those guys are legends but could never be the best shooting guard in the league. Not when there is someone else who can create their own shots at will, get to the foul line, etc. Harden is the best at it currently.

I'm surprised the poll is this close > 15-14 Thompson

Win Shares:

Harden: 9.8
Thompson:5.9

WAR:

Harden: 8.45
Thompson: 4.86

PER:

Harden: 27.9 (Kobe's best 28.0)
Thompson: 22.9

Box +/-:

Harden: 8.9
Thompson: 4.1

Simple Rating:

Harden: 14.7
Thompson: 13.5

I don't know why you're surprised. If it was James Harden vs. Dion Waiters, a lot of people around here would vote for Waiters.

What about Jimmy Butler? He's a lockdown defender.

I find it remarkable that Butler has gone from overlooked to overrated so quickly. He had a hot start to the season offensively, but has slowly regressed to the mean. Some people think that he is some sort of defensive monster. When I've watched the Bulls, his defense has never stood out to me. The metrics say that Harden and Thompson are more effective defenders.

Anyway, Harden performs at a higher level as a first option than Butler does as a second or third option. I'm not impressed by the "lockdown defender" argument for a guy who got torched by Wade yesterday

Butler isn't as good as Harden, but he's at times running in lineups where he's the only guy not crap at defense (Pau, Mirotic, Hinrich, Rose or Brooks), whilst always guarding the opponents best wing, whilst also being responsible for as much, if not more perimeter offense, whilst also being asked to play the most minutes in the league (by a solid margin).

It's basically the same wall Paul George ran into last year, the your body can't handle that thing, especially now that a lot of training is to add bulk which increases explosiveness at the cost of endurance.

Harden by a good margin. If you take into account the true definition of "2-way" SG, I'd have Wes Matthews up there in the discussion. Dude plays hard on both ends and is wet from 3.

Or the "Why Wayne Ellington is > Harden" posts that are to come in a few weeks.

Harden. If he could stop the damn flopping I'd watch him a lot more.
