The Lakers would probably prefer Towns because of his shot blocking ability, but Okafor is a great get here. Pair him on the front line with last year's lottery pick, Julius Randle and First Team All Rookie Team guard Jordan Clarkson and the Lakers finally have some real pieces to build around. Offensively, Okafor is the most gifted young big man I've seen in a decade. He has great feed and hands and plays with a great feel for the game. He's going to average 20 ppg in the league. If Okafor can keep that slimmed down physique he showed off in New York this week, he may end up surprising us all on the defensive end.

A 51-55 pick is unlikely to amount to anything besides another Sacre, but if we can get 3 picks in the top 35 (one top 5, one top 20, etc) then we'll look a lot better next year. Especially if we unload our terrible players, keep the serviceable ones, and sign an FA or two.

I think that great Tankathon site (which I hope to never have to visit again after this season) had the Lakers at #4 in terms of its "power rankings," which aggregates the value of the picks.

That top 5 has to count this year. We need to find someone who can be something special and it's going to come down to combine/interview/individual workouts. I have a feeling that we may pick someone like hezonja. I've read somewhere that he's a lot like kobe in that he's introverted, obsessed with perfecting his game, and doesn't have a life outside of basketball. From what I read that's where all the reports of him having an "attitude" come from. If any of this is true and he test out athletically, I think he may be our guy. Personally, I don't know much about him other that some highlights on YouTube. Any input would be appreciated.

Actually we were #2 for a large part of the year but have been #3 since Minnesota got the #1 seed

I think we have a chance to move ahead of the 76ers/Knicks. If we can get that 2nd worst record...

the 51-55 pick (if we even get it), should be used on an overseas guys who is raw and that you can keep developing for a few years. if he ends up being decent in a couple years, then you've essentially gotten value out of the pick. if not, then oh well, it was a late 2nd to begin with.

haha, fair enough. but you can't bring in 4 rookies, 5 if you include randle.

might as well let them sit overseas.

the only other reasonable option w/ that pick is to trade it for a future 2nd rounder.

With a few trades, we can get to 2nd worst IMO. Philly/Knicks may start winning more games than us.

Ok, so, I know if the Lakers get the top 5 pick, the draft pick that went to Phoenix drops to 2016, what happens then?

I would like to buy a later 2nd round pick and go for Rakeem Christmas, I think he would be a decent trade chip in a couple of years.

AGREED, the FO royally screwed up on both of those picks.

If we qualify to keep the 2016 pick we will be mired in mediocrity for many years to come.

I'm not happy about the draft protections, but remember at the time the deal was made, we basically had kobe/pau/Dwight/nash/Jamison/hill/meeks. So not much reason to think in the next 2 years we would be in the situation we are now.

But at least if 2015 is another devastating year, we will have 3 shots at keeping the pick, however remote that is.

NBADraft.net currently has the Lakers selecting Rakeem Christmas with the 34th pick.

I doubt we could do it, but if we can, I would gladly deal pick 34 and the Houston pick to move up to get Grant from Notre Dame. He's a do it all player with a great B-Ball IQ.
