a true winner would go into that Philly situation and work and work and work, plotting their future escape. Imagine a young Kobe going over there right now... he'd be in the gym, developing his game, knowing eventually he would either be able to force a trade out or become a free agent. Okafor can either use the time to develop himself or just basically quit and become just another guy around there... Everything we're hearing implies he's not going to try and become a superstar, he'll do enough, but not extra. That's another reason the D'Angelo Russell pick was the right one for us.

Can someone tell me by Upshaw being signed for Summer League...does that stop another team from stealing him til Summer League is over?

I think Lakers have his "rights" after Summer League. So there should be a window for them to lock him up.

No rights after SL. He would be free to sign anywhere he wants

So, let's say he has 2 monster SL games, can another team come to him and he agree to sign with them before he plays the last SL game?[/On purely basketball skills only, how good can Upshaw be?

I think there were 2 good reasons why Upshaw signed with the Lakers SPL team:

1. we need a center
2. Lakers have cap space in case he wants a bit more than the minimum.

Also, I don't think we can sign undrafted free agents to contacts until the new league year begins. Is that right or am I wrong?

Anyone have an answer to these questions?

If Upshaw took care of his demons, and his heart issue isn't an issue, probably a better defending Mozgov. Similar build, ability to shoot the mid range. Not a true post up kind of player, but able to block more shots than Mozgov. A massive roadblock in the middle.

Good enough to be a contributor for the Lakers?

If healthy (physically and mentally), no doubt. Maybe not a starter for a bit, but def 15-18 mpg. He was arguably a lottery talent this year but for his many issues.

He was blocking close to 5 shots a game. That is insane.

I'd prepare myself for years of 40 points against us. His post game is so above of the standard.

Those were some of the concerns I had about Okafor too. Byron said it best, imo : Okafor will be a great player, Russell can be a superstar.

I really hope he turns it around. His hands are MASSIVE. He will be able to dunk everything around the basket.

Drop in opponents 2pt field goal percentage of 11% when he is on the court.

In a few years could this guy be a defensive specialist capable of occasionally starting when we face big opponents, like Memphis, NO, HOU who have a center that LMA has trouble with. Bumping LMA to the 4 for those games.

It's the 4.5 blocks per game in under 30 minutes without the foul trouble.

Add that he has 19' range and a solid set of post skills too.

Really, lottery talent.

Well hell, other than the two games where Dellevedova turned into Cinderella, Mozgov was one of the best players on that Cavs team that pushed the series to 6 (sans El BJ of course).

If he got his head right, yes.

Im sure once Nance puts on the Rambis goggles and runs over McHalemon the sidelines, all will be forgiven.

A guy like Upshaw will kill it with DRuss throwing him lob after lob, and easy drop off after drop off. Make Upshaw's life simple.

From what I've been hearing Harrell was completely unimpressive.

Why would they do that when we need a center?

If Upshaw impresses, you can pretty much bet the Lakers will lock him up.

True. And getting easy buckets via DRuss in SPL will hopefully make him stay.
