|
Opposite Directions… These are two teams heading in opposite directions, the Lakers losing as many as the Cavs are winning these days.
The Cavs were getting what they wanted and how they wanted it. Kevin Love finished with a season-high 32 points on mostly open jumpers. Nothing like a dose of the Lakers to help them along.
For the Lakers, Jordan Clarkson continued to look more and more comfortable on the floor. He went for a season-high 20 points in three quarters of work.
The Lakers were able to score 105 points…they just gave up 120. The Cavs shot 55% from the floor and from three.
Clarkson -- -- Very good job probing in transition and using his length/hops to manufacture points at the rim or from the line on those. He was controlled, purposeful and efficient in those sequences. He led the Lakers with points and with 4 assists. (The box score a pretty good example of how this system will make it tricky to put up big assist numbers with consistency…very dispersed.) He’s looking much smoother finding his own spots and working the system for others. His perimeter shot wasn’t dropping with consistency, which almost makes the career high scoring night a little more impressive. He didn’t play in the fourth quarter, either. The Lakers had 19 offensive boards in this game. Our two rookies, Clarkson and Black, had 7 of those. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: Nice touch on the floater, losing his man on a screen. He picked off a LeBron pass in the back court, attacked and scored a layup with ease. He scored a layup off the pinch post next time down. He missed a pull-up jumper in transition. He choked an easy lefty layup off an offensive board (layup on the other way). He hit Wes cutting for a layup. He pushed it out and hit Boozer who fumbled it, he got out of the lane, then cut backdoor and Boozer found him for the reverse. He missed an elbow pull-up jumper. He was fouled attacking the rim, he made both FTs. He had 10 points in the half. Second Half: He missed a baseline fade against a double team. He attacked the paint and just missed an And-1 layup, he made both FTs. He pushed up the break, elevated over the D and scored the layup. He pushed out the break and drew FTs, he made one. He broke down the D and missed a good look at a layup. He missed a long three having to force it up against the shotclock. He drew more FTs pushing out the break, he made both. Nice job probing, keeping his head up on the break, then transitioning to the set offense and hitting Ellington for the three. He scooped up a loose ball, veered into his man to draw contact on the break and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Nice help D challenge on Love to get a stop. He airballed a three right to Ellington for a score.
Black -- -- He started out on LeBron, then when Kelly picked up fouls against Love he brought in Wes to take on LBJ. A lot of highlights of Love hitting threes and Tarik trying to get out there with a hand up and always a couple steps behind the ball. It wasn’t pretty as the Cavs got what they wanted with ease. I think we probably forget he’s a rookie defensively. He had some rookie moments helping where he didn’t need to. Much better game offensively from him, including a couple strong finishes. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting to go with 7 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He stripped LeBron. He kept an offensive board alive to get the Lakers a couple putback attempts. He scored a layup off the two-man game with Lin. He one-hand slammed back down an Ellington missed drive over Love. Not close on a jumphook on good position. He found Sacre under the hoop for a jumphook. Second Half: He spun, was blocked, got it back and scored the layup. Bad double team to help in the post and leave Love open, he then fouled on the close out. He dunked off the wraparound interior pass from Davis.
Ellington -- -- Kind of a typical game from Wayne, getting his 12 points he seems to always good for. Not very exciting, just steady. I can daydream about watching a Clarkson/D’Angelo Russell combination as we pile up the losses. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-14 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a long wing pull-up jumper on our first possession. He sank a baseline turnaround next time down. He missed a three. He missed a drive, but Boozer cleaned it up. Poor post entry pass, turnover when Sacre tried to save it. Not close on sideline jumper. He missed a layup, but Black cleaned it up. He missed a good look at a wing three. He attacked and forced up a brick on a drive. He lost a double team on a nice step through and banked. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He hit a three coming off a down screen. He missed an open 19-footer. He hit Davis on the two-man game out of the system for a layup. He grabbed an airball and reversed. He drained a pull-up 30-footer to end the third quarter.
Kelly -- -- He got the Love assignment defensively to start and quickly picked up a couple of fouls to sit. So we ran him defensively at the PF and then offensive at the SF until the fourth quarter. We let him run at PF for some minutes. He was ineffective offensively, missing threes and shots he has to make. Very disappointing that he can’t string anything together. After his good game, nothing. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He deflected a pass on one end and missed a flat floater on the other. Second Half: He missed a wide open 15-footer from the wing (got to hit those). He missed a 20-footer (three for LeBron against him the other way). He attacked past LeBron and swished the floater (nice arch on that one). Nice block/strip on LeBron forcing him to throw the shot over the hoop. He missed a wing three. He missed a wide open three in early offense. He swiped a pass in the zone D. He missed a step-back three.
Sacre -- -- Not much of a threat on the offensive end as you would expect. He missed some easy ones he should have had and was rejected on a dunk. He battled hard, as always, but we miss impact minutes from our bigmen in the starting lineup. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 5 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and no fouls on 24 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He missed a turnaround jumper on iso. He got tapped on a baseline jumper. He probably got away with a moving screen but hit Clarkson with a feed for the layup. He missed a putback. He kept an offensive board alive. He backed his man down well but missed the jumphook. Black hit him under the hoop for the jumphook. Second Half: He drew FTs battling under hoop for an offensive board, he missed both. He missed a lefty jumphook on iso. He swiped a pass and ignited a break. He blocked a shot at one end and hit the 16-footer trailing the break on the other. He was blocked badly on a dunk attempt.
Young -- -- Not much of a game from Nick. He hit a couple of garbage time threes and was little factor out there. He had a couple of nice moments defensively, which again is what you want to see from him whether we are in full tank mode or not. He need to keep that as a constant in his game. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He airballed a three trying to draw a foul on his first touch. He missed a midrange jumper. He weaved around the perimeter and swished a wing jumper. He missed a three in transition, dunk for his man the other way. He iso’d and missed a three straight away. He was stripped and wanted the foul, yelling at the refs and picking up a tech as the Cavs took it for a dunk. Second Half: He missed a pull-up 17-footer. Short on an open corner three, leaning back. Nice challenge defensively to get a stop. He swished a wing three on iso. He swished another one from the same area.
Lin -- -- Some sloppy ball at times out there. I think both times he entered the game in each half, he immediately turned the ball over on sloppy passing sequences. Those hurt. He rallied late in the game with a few scores and some nice work running the two-man game. Defensively, he and Boozer got picked on in the second half. Lin got no help from Boozer, but also got burned on iso. That helped the Cavs lead balloon before Scott eventually sat Boozer halfway through garbage time. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-9 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Wild pass after picking up his dribble, turnover. He hit Boozer on the two-man game for the jumper. Irving worked him over on D and hit a roller for a dunk. He missed a floater on a drive (really needs to work on that). Great job taking an inbounds coast to coast with 6 seconds left to score and the end of the quarter. Not close on a wild bank shot. He worked the two-man game for Black to score. Second Half: His first touch of the second half, turnover on a kickout. He coughed up the ball again on a sloppy passing sequence. Horrible D on two straight sequences to give up a dunk and layup (the second one he just got blown by without a screen). Another dunk off the two-man D next time down with Boozer giving no help. No help again on the two-man D to give up an open three. He curled into the lane and hit the runner. He swished a three trailing the break. He attacked and missed his turnaround. He set up Davis for a layup off the two-man game. He attacked down the lane and powered in a layup under duress. He swished a pull-up 18-footer, working off the screen in early offense. Nice challenge to force a turnover on a drive and pass off. He attacked and was rejected. He set up Davis for FTs on a lob.
Boozer -- -- The Cavs started picking on the Lin/Boozer combo defensively in the second half and that was the nail in the coffin. It wasn’t pretty. Boozer would be caught in no man’s land and Lin was either getting left in the dust off a screen…or without one. Scott kept Boozer’s minutes low and experimented a little with Kelly at the PF. He did all his offensive work in the first half. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-10 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He grabbed an Ellington miss on the drive and put it back in. He missed an 18-footer. He fumbled a pass on the break, recovered it and hit Clarkson for a reverse. He missed a drive off a series of moves on the baseline. He banked a jumper off the two-man game with Lin. He missed a baseline jumper. He sank a pull-up jumper right at the FT line. Great position and he grabbed a missed three and scored the putback And-1 layup, he made the FT. He gave up a lob dunk in the one. Second Half: He missed an open FT jumper.
Davis -- -- Very nice work by the bigman again today. He crashed the glass, worked the post, scored off the two-man game, blocked a couple of shots, stole a couple of balls. Well-rounded work off the bench. Lin and Davis continue to look more consistent in their chemistry, while also keeping Boozer involved. Nick Young seems like the “which one doesn’t belong here” representative as far as offensive fluidity goes with the bench. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-7 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 block and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He drew a foul on a jumphook he had to rush after being in the paint a while before the pass came, he made both FTs. He scored a layup in transition. Second Half: He ball-faked, attacked and scored the layup (goaltended). He scored a layup off the two-man game with Ellington. Nice wraparound interior pass to Black for the dunk. He blocked Love’s jumper. Nice iso D in the post to get a stop. He was stripped under the hoop. He reset the offense on the boards, scooped up a loose ball shortly later and scored the layup. He scored a layup working the two-man game with Lin. He drew FTs on the two-man game with Lin, he made both.
Johnson -- -- Strong first half leading the Lakers in scoring. He wouldn’t score again until he hit a meaningless three with 3 seconds left. His game was mostly perimeter oriented offensively. He had one nice off-ball cut that led to a score. We could use more of that. Outside of Kobe, feels like the last guy to be consistently effective at that was Matt Barnes. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-14 shooting (2-4 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He sank a pull-up 18-footer on his first touch of the game. He hit an And-1 pull-up jumper on LeBron, he made the FT. He missed a wing jumper. He missed a wing jumper after losing LeBron off the screen nicely. He then cut off his miss and scored a layup when Clarkson found him. He battled for an offensive board and was fouled on the putback attempt, he made both FTs. He sank a three off the handoff when LeBron went under the screen. He missed a tough pumping jumper up against the shotclock. He had 12 points in the half. Second Half: He deflected a pass to get a stop. He missed a wing jumper. He got tapped on a pull-up wing jumper from the same spot. Short on a turnaround in the paint. He missed a wing jumper. He swiped a ball on the other end on help D. He missed a wing three. He sank a three with 3 seconds left.
Scott -- -- He started Black on LeBron and Kelly on Love… Kelly out for Wes after a couple minutes with a couple fouls against Love. Better matchups defensively now as Wes takes LeBron… The Lakers led 15-14 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… He brought in Boozer for Black… Good start by Clarkson. The Lakers led 19-18 when the timeout came with 3 minutes left. He brought in Nick, Lin and Davis for the remaining starters… The Lakers trailed 32-28 after the first quarter… Same unit to start the second quarter… Down 7, he sat Boozer for Black… He sat Davis for Sacre shortly later… Starters in with Young instead of Kelly, down 3… Nick picked up a tech on a turnover and Scott sat him for Wes… A 12-0 run for the Cavs and the Lakers were quickly down 15. Love with 22 points, hitting open threes all half… The Lakers trailed 64-49 at the half. The Lakers shot 38%, the Cavs 59% with 19 assists and 8-14 from three. The Laker bench had a 29-4 scoring advantage… He brought in Davis for Sacre after about 8 minutes… Nice run by the Lakers (Clarkson especially) and they cut the lead back to 16 when the timeout came… He stayed with this lineup out of that timeout with 3 minutes left… The Lakers trailed 96-79 heading into the fourth quarter… Full second unit to start the fourth… The Cavs started picking on Boozer/Lin… Down 25, he brought back in Kelly at PF for Boozer midway through the quarter… The Cavs shot 55% from the floor and from three… |

Pretty good overall DB...but re-watch the game. As soon as Clarkson (Wes a little later) came in at the 44-41 point of the 2nd qtr...the Cavs exploded and never looked back. By the time Lin came back they were down 17. That was my biggest concern about Clarkson's performance. As the announcer said, it was like a summer league game. The Lakers were so far behind, there was little D being played by anyone. |

it must be tough for Nick, he should have been in the grammy red carpet if the Lakers were off tonight... just saw Iggy was alone there. |

Lakers scored 2 points over about 5 minutes (~6 minute mark, when Byron Scott started to put starting unit back in game, to about 1 minute mark) in second quarter (20 - 2 run):
http://popcornmachine.net/gf?date=20150208&game=LALCLE
(This latest starting unit lineup has seemed to score at about 15 - 20 points per quarter pace consistently over multiple games. Ronnie Price led starters prior to that seemed to score at a pace of about 20 points per quarter. Even if defense is not Charmin soft, going to be hard to win games scoring so few points, even if Lakers were in East).

I think it's time to start using the ":-))" in the title for anytime we cover the spread. With the tank rolling as fast as it is now you may break your "(" button. |

Thanks DB. Who was Love's man in the second quarter? It looked like the Lakers just decided to leave him totally wide open behind the three point line. |

Think it was Ed and Black who was guarding him.

Agreed. He put an ok stat line but his play was kinda sloppy as DB said and he wasn't playing with the explosiveness like he usually has on O or the movement he usually has on D. |

I know it hurts to see this team lose, but I just want them to keep working hard and letting the young guys get more development time. Winning is more important when you're getting paid, but the main one who makes the most $$$ on this team isn't available, so lose, Lakers, Lose. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the top pick in the draft! |
