Another possibility would be to do a heads-or-tails at the end of the season to determine whether the draft would go in order of worst record to best record or go in order of best record to worst.
Yes, that would mean that some years the worst teams would have the poorest draft positions. But how often have the best players gone in order of how they turned out in the league? And how often has being able to draft any of the top ten players actually helped a bad team improve?
How many years did the Clippers draft first, second or third, and still end up in the lottery every year? It was only Stern nixing the Lakers deal for Chris Paul, and then accepting a worse deal from the Clippers that has actually helped the Clippers climb from bad to slightly better than mediocre.
There is more to why teams lose than what players they are able to assemble. There is also how competent and committed the owner is, how good the GM is, and how good of a match the coach is to the players.
In theory, putting the best prospects on the worst teams is supposed to help the players develop because they will get more playing time on that team than they would on a good team with great depth.
But we don't really see teams at the bottom of the league improve just because they are able to draft one or two potentially good players.
But the NBA's #1 goal is to sell as many tickets in as many cities as they can. And that, ultimately, is why they like to sell the fans of the worst teams on the dream that one day, their team will become champions. _________________ I would rather have questions I cannot answer than answers I cannot question - Richard Feynman |

Sure there might be some late season tanking by 8 seeds but they'd probably be happy making playoffs too and at least you wouldn't have to endure a 76rs type season, maybe just the last couple games. Also an 8 seed might still have like the 15th pick which isn't bad, especially given the lotto might have shot them like a 12 or 13 anyway |
Sure, that might solve the tanking problem. But it opens up a new problem. The basic purpose of the draft is to give the worst teams a better chance to improve, and your system eliminates that. And that's the basic problem with all anti-tanking solutions: They also hurt the terrible teams that are trying.
Before there was a lottery, there will be terrible NBA teams who won 14 or 15 games. And no matter what system you put in place will always be terrible teams. I don't think tanking merits completely revamping the lottery system. |
Not exactly, these bad teams would still have a good chance to get a high pick (50% 7th pick or higher). Not only this, but our current system punishes bad teams for actually trying to instill a winning culture and missing playoffs when they could have tanked, leaving them in perpetual mediocrity. The true even odds system is perfect since it can still turn the tides for a bad team, while also giving no incentive to lose games. The only drawback as I previously stated was potential late season tanking by 8 seeds, but even that is much more bearable than what we have going on now. |
Yeah, I don't like any of that. I'd say either keep things as they are, or if you think tanking is an incredibly bad thing, give all the teams an equal shot in the lottery -- whether they win a ring or have the worst record.
Either way, I don't think it matters all that much. Because the Lakers are doing so badly, LG folks are a little obsessed with tanking at the moment, but the NBA will keep marching forward no matter whether the system stays as is or is changed. |

Ummmm have you not watched the 76rs who openly admit to "taking advantage of the opportunity presented by the lottery system" |
The 76ers have been winning more than the Lakers in recent months. |

It's not about months now, though, because their roster changed dramatically at the trade deadline.
We'll see in two-three weeks _________________ Kobe |

Dear Mr. Commissioner, it would be nice if I could root for my team to win, even when they are not so good.
The way you have thing set up now... The season is over after the first 30 games, for many teams. It just seems like the fans and the networks are being cheated. That's all! |

Use the current lottery system, but reward the teams that have shown improvements, give more balls to the lottery teams according to their # of wins compared to last year. |

That wont make the tanking accusations go away. Lose as many possible one year, then improve the next year and get a good pick.
Tanking just isn't a big issue. Take the draft away completely and you'll still have some really bad teams out there who really have nothing for the fans to be happy about. |

Why does everyone want to change the rules when the Lakers are making use of it but then they are fine in previous years when the Lakers aren't facing the same situations..... |

Probably because they are frustrated that tanking teams will knock us out of the top 5 slots and we'll lose our pick. |

That's the way it's always been. We're not just used to it happening to us. |
