One, Two, Three… The losses are piling up. After winning three straight, the Lakers are hitting their stride again and have dropped three straight.

Once again, another poor third quarter by the starters. The team hung in there, scrapped for a lead in the last few minutes of the game…and then on cue, fell apart. They were outscored by 9 in the final 4 minutes to lose 100-94 to the Heat.

Seven Lakers scored in double digits, but they couldn’t get stops down the stretch – the weakside of the D slow to react on key scores for Whiteside (who finished with 18 points and 25 boards).

“I was pleased with the energy,” Scott said. “I was pleased with the effort. It was the execution on the defensive end especially the last two minutes of the game that I wasn’t pleased with.”

Clarkson -- -- Not a good shooting night for Clarkson. Those midrange shots and the three ball weren’t falling with consistency. Scott still gave him the opportunity to rise up to the occasion, setting up a play for him in the final minute. Clarkson missed the big three. “It took guts to take the shot,” Scott said. This is how you properly tank. A win is meaningless in the scheme of things, but experience for Clarkson with the game on the line can’t be duplicated in practice. “That’s a good read on his part and a good shot,” Lin said of Clarkson’s key miss. Good job on the boards, not good with the turnovers in this one. He also had to sit with some foul trouble in the third quarter. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-11 shooting (1-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 5 assists, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 28 minutes. The Action: He missed a pull-up 16-footer in transition straight away. He pushed out the break and scored a layup when the defender didn’t commit to the ball. He missed a wild layup attempt on the break getting caught in the air trying to avoid contact. He drew FTs on a wing pull-up jumper next time down, he made one. He missed a flat elbow pull-up. He finished a lob on the break from Lin. He passed up a three, attacked and bounced to Davis for the dunk. He missed a pull-up jumper on the break. He hit Boozer on the pick and pop for a jumper. He found him rolling for a layup next time down. He lost the ball pushing it up with a couple seconds on the clock. Second Half: He swished a three on a kickout. He missed a three a step back farther next time down. He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He drew the D and hit Hill for the jam. He was blocked on a layup off an interior feed. He attacked from the corner, elevated high to finish over Whiteside and drew FTs going down hard, he made both with 1:44 left to cut it to 1. He missed a three out of a timeout in the final seconds.

Boozer -- -- Scott kept his minutes limited. Boozer scored 12 of his 13 points in the first half and was little factor as the game went along. We don’t need to see Boozer in the fourth quarter. Save those minutes for the young guys to gain some experience. Scott is also going small at times with Wes at PF to space the floor in the closing minutes. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-11 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He sank a 17-footer straight away. He missed a turnaround in the post. He didn’t hit rim on a pull-up jumper. He faced up and attacked for a layup from the left block. He slammed getting out on the break when Lin found him. He choked a 5-footer. He attacked Whiteside, drew contact and a foul, he made both FTs. He swished a jumper off the two-man game with Clarkson. He rolled to the hoop and took the bounce pass from Clarkson next time down for a layup. He missed a 16-footer. He had 12 points on 5-9 shooting. Second Half: He missed a baseline jumper. He pushed out a break, fumbled it, got it back and drew the foul, he made one FT. He was blocked trying to finish over Whiteside.

Ellington -- -- A lot of minutes for Wayne tonight with Clarkson getting a little foul trouble. On the back-to-back that can be tough for a shooter. Not a great shooting night, but not horrible as he made a couple of threes. But his shot was off as the game went along. “I got to slow down a little bit and find some better looks,” he said. Defensively, he had some issues late in the game on the weakside rotations. He also had to deal with Wade, which is tough. “Just got to be in the right spot at the right time,” Wayne said of his rotations. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-15 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists and 4 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He swished a step-back corner three for the Lakers first score. He hit a pull-up 12-footer in the lane for their second score. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He pushed out a loose ball and dunked. He missed an open corner three. Tight curl into the lane and he sank the short teardrop. He worked off a screen, went behind his back, gathered himself and hit the three. He had 12 points on 5-8 shooting. Second Half: He missed a 12-footer. He cocked back but couldn’t finish the dunk over Haslem. He let Wade go right around him for a dunk. He forced up and airballed a three. He missed a short one over Whiteside’s challenge. He cleaned up a Lin miss on the break. He attacked and kicked out baseball-style to Lin for the open three. He missed a long pull-up jumper. He missed a wing jumper. No help on the weakside and we gave up a lob dunk to Whiteside.

Kelly -- -- Tricky matchup for him with Wade cross-matching him. Often, that meant Kelly had to cover Wade instead of Deng on the other end. The Heat liked that. Scott made a special effort to allow Kelly to contribute to the tank late in the game. After sitting all fourth quarter, he brought him back in with 3 minutes left for a play. Kelly attacked, was stripped and promptly fouled to send the Heat to the line. Just a couple seconds of masterful work by both coach and player. Kelly scored all his points on one play, an And-1 three. He should have had 5 points on that one play but he missed a tech FT, as well. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He didn’t run to meet a pass, Wade did, steal. Second Half: He pushed it up and missed a tough layup. He sank a wing And-1 three (he missed a tech to blow a 5-point play), he made the FT. Back in with over 3 minutes left and he was stripped and fouled.

Sacre -- -- He had 17 solid minute of tank time. He contributed solidly to that. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Low position and he hit a short jumphook. He threw a pass away trying to hit a cutter. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper. He was rejected badly on a jumphook.

Lin -- -- Nearly a double-double tonight and another strong game from Lin. He talked about the issues with the Lakers weakside defense in the final minutes. “It’s pretty difficult trying to be in both places at once to try to get there and back,” Lin said. “That’s something I’ve got to do a better job of and the team in general.” He missed an opportunity to try to wrap up Whiteside on one key play and send him to the line. Lin had a very good stretch of D late in the second quarter, getting a couple of steals and taking a charge. He led the team with 4 steals and also with 9 assists. Loved seeing Lin find Clarkson for the lob on the break. Clarkson called for it and Lin put it up there for him, fully aware of Clarkson’s ability to get up. Hope those two can continue to build some chemistry to close the season. Scott has loosened up the offense to allow them to attack more off screens, especially early in the shotclock. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 9 assists, 4 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He lobbed to Clarkson on the break for the slam, very nice. Next time down, he pushed the break out and dumped a bounce pass to Boozer for the dunk down the middle of the lane. He drew FTs up-faking a man on the perimeter, he made one. He attacked the paint, collapsed the D and hit Davis at the last second for the layup. He hit a step back 16-footer. He saw the D sleeping, attacked from the wing and scored high off the glass over the help D before going down. He attacked and hit Ed for the jam. He swiped the ball on the other end. He stood in and drew a charge next time down. He missed a three straight away. He slapped a pass away and then threw it off a Heat player to get a stop. He hit Hill for the jumper. Second Half: He forced up a wing jumper and missed. He attacked and missed, but Davis cleaned it up. He swiped a bad pass, attacked and missed around the contract, but a teammate cleaned it up for him. He swished the wing three on a kickout. He was stripped on a drive. He lobbed to Wes when he was left open in early offense. He missed an open wing three. He probed off the high screen and reversed. He scooped up a loose ball for a steal and was fouled. He found Davis under the hoop for the And-1. Screen in the early offense and he sank the wing pull-up jumper. He missed a wing jumper. High screen, he attacked, drew the D and hit Hill for the layup. Looked like he could have taken a foul on Whiteside on help D under the hoop, instead we gave up a layup. He did get whistled for a foul on Whiteside on the other end after a miss and Whiteside made one FT. Not close on a pull-up three down 4, needed that one for any chance.

Hill -- -- Whiteside went off for 18 points and 25 rebounds (6 offensive). He had two key scores in crunch time, including a massive lob dunk. “Weakside has to come in and give him a bump till I come back in, but there was no weakside help. So that’s something we have to work on,” Hill said. He wanted Ellington to put a body on Whiteside while Hill was denying the penetration. The D just fell apart. I liked Hill’s work on the boards better in this one. He came up big with a reverse dunk off an offensive board late in the game. Those are huge plays and much more important for the team than him standing 18 feet from the hoop launching jumpers. Better job in that regard tonight. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-14 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-4 from th eline) to go with 10 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed an 18-footer. He was stripped on a drive. He missed a short one in the lane, but Davis cleaned it up. He missed a 14-footer. He found Wes cutting for the jam. He sank an 18-footer flashing to the ball. Second Half: He jammed off the drive and dish from Clarkson. He drew FTs working the offensive glass, he made one. He drew FTs battling for a missed shot, he made both. Wild drive and miss. He sank an open 15-footer. He was hacked badly by Wade in front of a ref, no call. He missed a heave from the corner on an inbounds shortly later. He missed an open elbow jumper, jerked it up there. Great feed by Lin and Hill scored the layup. He skied for a missed Johnson three and threw down a reverse dunk next time down. He missed a three at the buzzer (not close).

Davis -- -- He led the Lakers in scoring (14) with Wayne and in rebounds (12). Throw in 3 steals and a block, good job stuffing that stat sheet. Unlike the last one, the guards did a much better job finding him tonight and Ed came through. The first time they tried to find him tonight, he wasn’t paying attention when Clarkson threw it to him and it caused a turnover. Clarkson later found him for a dunk. Keep an eye on the chemistry with those two. It’s not quite there like it is with Lin, but hopefully it grows. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-10 shooting to go with 12 boards (2 offensive), 3 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He wasn’t paying attention when Clarkson passed to him, turnover Clarkson. He dunked off the bounce pass from Clarkson. He scored a layup off of Lin’s drive and dish next time down. He dunked off the drive and dish from Lin again. Next time down he cleaned up a missed shot by Hill. He had 8 points on 4-4 shooting and 7 boards in the half. Second Half: He hit a jumphook over Whiteside. He was blocked by Whiteside on a jumper next time down. He attacked, spun and couldn’t finish. He crashed the glass off Lin’s drive and threw down the putback. Not close on a jumphook under the hoop. He swiped a ball in the backcourt. He pump-faked, took contact and threw it over his shoulder and it went in for the And-1, he missed the FT. Hard foul on Whiteside to prevent a dunk and it saved two FTs with 5 minutes left.

Johnson -- -- A few too many turnovers for Wes tonight, considering how little we depend on him to create. Another solid/average outing for him. We ran him at PF again late in the game to spread the floor. Wes scores 10 points a game on the road and 8.8 at home. He shoots better from three on the road (.417) than he does in Staples (.311) for whatever reason. He had a good February averaging 11.1 points after the poor January where he shot .250 from three and averaged just 7.5 points. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting (2-4 form three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a sideline jumper. He threw an inbounds pass away. He cut backdoor, took the pass and jammed with both hands. He blocked a layup on the other end. He flashed to the ball and sank the three. He was trapped in the corner and threw a pass away. Second Half: He finished a lob softly when the D failed to match up in early offense. He jab-stepped and sank a corner three. He threw a pass out of bounds expecting Hill to cut to the basket. He missed a baseline pull-up in transition. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He sank a long wing jumper off the two-man game. He missed a wing three. He missed a FT jumper with 6 seconds left.

Scott -- -- Good start by the Lakers. They led 11-4 when a Heat timeout came. The Heat went on a 9-0 run, however, out of that… He brought in Davis, Johnson and Lin with 5 minutes left, Lakers down 1… He sat Boozer for Hill up 1 a couple minutes later… The Lakers trailed 28-25 after the first quarter… He started the Davis, Hill, Johnson, Ellington, Lin unit to open the second quarter… Sacre in for Davis, Lakers pulling out to a small lead… The rest of the starters in to close… The Lakers led 51-46 at the half. They shot a strong 58%... The painful third quarter. The Lakers were in the penalty quickly with fouls just about every time down… The Lakers trailed by 2 when the timeout came… A 15-2 Miami run when Hill came in for Sacre, Lakers down 6. Starters just getting handled again… Lin in for Ellington, Lakers down 65-59… Clarkson had to sit with his fourth foul for Ellington… They trimmed the Heat lead down… The Lakers trailed 76-73 heading into the fourth… Same unit to start the fourth that started the second quarter… Big switch in crunch time. Lakers had a 3-point lead with 4 minutes left and trailed by 2 just 40 seconds later. Scott called a timeout… He brought in Kelly for Davis. Kelly attacked, was stripped and then fouled the heat. Tank special play right there… He sat Kelly seconds later for Clarkson, sliding Wes to PF down 3… Timeout down three, Clarkson missed a three with 19 seconds left… Lakers got closed again…

Thanks for hanging in there, and adding color and humor to the game recaps, DB.

Deadly 3rd quarter again. Good training on how to fight you way back to the game though.

Great DB. Thanks.

I don't understand Wes Johnson's game. He has a good moment here, a really not good moment there and he's hard to find much of the time when he's out there playing.

Hill is better not dribbling. Lin had a nice game, this one more tilted towards defensive disruption and solid facilitation. Clarkson looked athletic, shots didn't fall. Sacre is a waste of space. Kelly just can't get it going, but he's trying. Davis, yes!

It's weird supporting this team this season.

I was following the game and when it was at 82-82 (?), I had
mixed feelings. I wanted them to win and yet hope that they didnt.

It felt very odd.

Am doomed to feel bad either way.

And poor Tarik. I think he (and all professional players) deserve
better treatment than this.

Thanks DB!

Thanks for the tanks, DB!

What would it take for cott to understand that Kelly is not a SG? The stubborn blindness of some coaches is just beyond me (last year Wes at PF, this year Kelly at SF + all the DNP CD-s for no particular reason...)

The Charlotte Hornets game, I thought Lakers made some defensive mistakes at end of game that let Bobcats score easily and end up with win.

This game, I thought whole team played really well, and Dwayne Wade, as grizzled veteran with know how that comes with winning multiple rings, just picked apart Lakers defense in same way Kobe might have before his season ended with worsening of rotator cuff tear.
Quote:
"Dwyane has that knack, of obviously getting into the paint . . . but he has that ability to make those reads at the very last count."

.

"And the Heat had one guy to make sure Whiteside got the game's two biggest baskets.

"That's his brilliance over 12 years," Spoelstra said of Wade."

To me, Wade ruthlessly and methodically picked apart Lakers at end of game (with his mind) just like how Kobe showed he could later this season with Lakers (Denver Nuggets game, then first half of Grizzlies game in January).

DWade in Q4:

Game Flow: http://popcornmachine.net/gf?date=20150304&game=LALMIA

No shame in young Lakers team essentially getting schooled a bit by future Hall of Famer / multiple NBA champion Dwayne Wade in crunch time this game.

(gotta wonder if Ellington is wearing down from the very heavy minutes he played this game, and previous games, when Swaggy P could not play and Lakers going with 3 guard rotation; he missed some open three pointers in fourth quarter of previous games, and I think he might have gotten beaten rather badly on defense few times last few games in fourth quarter, too; wonder if fatigue is becoming an issue for him)

(Jordan Hill played entire fourth quarter this game, when earlier in season I think he could only play maybe 8 - 10 minutes at a time, and Byron Scott took him out for a breather in fourth quarter of recent game, too; Hill also had that really nice dunk in traffic late in fourth quarter)

Davis should be averaging 11/8 right now he should be finishing games, but always gets pulled in the last 4-5M of the game even though he's having a Impact ... I hope this is just one of the Lakers master tanking strategy or next year is gonna be the same song with any FA we sign.

Just took a look at Lakers schedule recently and Heat game was the 5th game in 8 nights after All Star Break, back to back and on the road:

http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bu9G4sUIMAE6gqx.jpg:large

(In retrospect, really impressive how hard Lakers played against Heat, and against Hornets night before).

Schedule and more sustained rest doesn't let up until after Knicks game next week.

At that point, Lakers will have played 9 games in 16 days, with only one day rest between games, and they go to the Grindhouse for final game of this 3 game in 4 night road trip!

Not sure why you are surprised, we are one of the worst rim protectors in the league...our bigs can't guard anything...if they can even play some defense we would have won a bunch of more games.

On another note, notice how every single game is like a nail biter lol. can someone find how many games this season came down to the wire by 5 points or less?

I disagree with your smiley for Hill though. He got thoroughly dominated by Whiteside on the glass and was a non-factor in guarding him when it counted.

He scored some points, but it was the usual empty stats you can expect from Half Ass Hill.
