But I don't think they are in NBA limbo. While I am not intrigued by any of their prospects, all it takes is for the lotto balls to gift them Simmons. And they would have the cap space to pick up another star player via free agency. And if the lotto balls do not fall in the Celtics favor they can try to trade the pick and all of the Brooklyn picks down the road for Cousins.

The Lakers main problem is that we have a talented young core but we can not rack in free agents due to our poor record while the Celtics can, and if we want to acquire a guy like Cousins we have to give up a significant amount of our core.

I think the Lakers and Celtics are rebuilding in two different ways. The Lakers are doing the conventional draft and grow players while the Celtics are hedging their bets on both side by acquiring picks and good vets on tradable contracts.

I can easily see the Celtics creating another big 3, by either getting Ben Simmons and pairing him with a top FA or by trading the Brooklyn pick for Cousins on top of adding a top FA.

Boston has won 9 out of the last 10 games. They just beat Cleveland and are now the the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference. They have some nice pieces over there and a very good young coach. They also have a bunch of really good draft picks too. They are way ahead of us right now and it's not even close.

Celtics are doing pretty well maybe a few years from a championship contender but they are closer than many expected and winning against teams they were never expected to even compete with.

The Lakers well the record speaks for itself but after Kobe retires, I think we'll see what they can really do.

We have to hope Brooklyn starts winning enough so that they have a worse chance of getting Simmons.

Boston did a few things better than us:
- they actually traded their veteran players instead of waiting for them to leave for nothing (and in the process they got the BKN picks and the J. Crowder from Dallas). We let Pau and DH walk for nothing....
- hired a competent coach, that actually has an idea what it wants to accomplish
- found much better mixture of veteran players and young ones. They pick-up I. Thomas, Amir Johnson, resigned A. Bradley and we got lou, hibbert and resigned nick young

What they did worse, I think are the draft choices. Smart does seem as just a role player (even if I think the 2014 draft was overrated..except Wiggins) and the other players they drafted this year and last year are not even getting any kind of minutes (RJ Hunter, James Young)

lol @ people thinking a good coach doesn't make a difference. It does in today's age where individual talent is beyond overrated. It's more of a team game than it ever was.

Explain how Brad Stevens is on pace to win at least 45 games with a bunch of role-players? He's changed the culture in Boston for the better.

Nice read on how he's transformed Boston.

It all started with Brad Stevens. Meanwhile we've gone through the re-used rack of clothing each time.

Brad Stevens is the main reason they have turned it around so quickly but their players don't get enough credit. They have a lot of young players who have bought into what Stevens is selling and are more interested in team wins than stats. They understand that defense is the most important part of the game. The Celtics have acquired players who want to play defense and may not put up pretty numbers but they can help a team win games. The Lakers have the opposite kind of guys and a coach seemingly uninterested in even trying to get players to play defense. Marcus Smart was getting a lot of hate on here over the past offseason and people were saying that they would take Clarkson over him. Smart is a tenacious defender and his shooting has been coming around lately. The Lakers need more guys like that and less guys who play no defense and want to try and score 1 on 1 all game. The Celtics are so far ahead of the Lakers right now it hurts to watch. The Celtics play team first basketball and focus on defense while the Lakers play selfish basketball and are only worried about making flashy plays and filling up their own stat sheets and highlight reels. Russell and Randle are only 19 and 21 year old rookies so I believe they can both be coached into good defensive players who play team basketball but I'm not so sure about some of the other guys on the team right now. Nance is really the only player who focuses on his defense and takes pride in it. Celtics are way ahead of us in the race for a championship.

If Boston gets the #1 pick after making playoffs, it will give them the edge by a lot. Plus, Brad Stevens is a great coach who needs a couple great players and they will go to the finals in the East in the next few years if they get them.

Celtics will not win a title any time soon, relax.

Of course we won't either but at least they won't!

Isn't the topic which team will get a championship first or which team is closer to becoming real contenders? I don't think either team will win it all this year.

Brad Stevens deserves the credit he gets, but ownership and Ainge should also get credit for embracing a rebuild, sticking with their plan through some losing seasons.

They didn't bet on signing recent UFAs and I think they are the better for it. Now they have a good core group of players and a system, which is producing wins. That's more attractive to free agents, but also gives management more leverage in making sure free agents will fit in. And they have draft pics to trade or to add missing pieces and salary cap space.

On a relative basis they are way ahead of us. That said, we've got a promising young core too, so hopefully our ownership and FO can get on the same page.

Pretty much.

That's what happens when you have a great coach. He's making that team full of role players and 3rd options into a watchable and competitive team.

Obviously they won't win anything with their current roster. A great coach can only do so much after all. If they had 2 star players on their team, then they would be title contenders, but so far, they don't have anyone close to that yet.

We on the other hand have the opposite situation. 3 players with incredible futures as well as getting the 1st pick in lottery day this year, while we have the worst coach in NBA history that is clearly holding this team back.

I will take our situation right now any day of the week. Because all it takes for this roster now is one good long term coach while the Celtics on the other hand will just be "Atlanta Hawks" good. A competitive team in the regular season but never serious title contenders because they lack a star.

Of course, there's no race between the Laker and Celtic clubs; every club is facing every club every year.

One has to think Boston fans are happier than Laker fans with their roster, their coach and bounce-back since their last championship.

Different club has different strategy. Lakers always build for championship. They trade for Shaq and Kobe and won 3 titils. After losing to Spurs, they did some fine tuning by adding Malone and Payton. When it didn't work out, they broke it up and moved to Kobe and Gosol era and won 2 titles. After losing to Mavs, they did fine tuning again by adding Howard and Nash. When it didn't work out, they went to rebuild quietly and quickly. With Kobe going to retire, Lakers have already built a pretty good young core, 60 million cap space for FA and may be a top 3 pick. We could be back to contention very soon with a super star FA. I'm glad with what we have and think our FO have done a good job to always bring us back to contention quickly. Much better than most of the NBA clubs. Spurs have also done a good job in keep themselves in contention. However, we still have 1 more Finals appearances since season 1999-10 and we have almost finished the rebuilding of our 3rd contention squad for next 10 years. Celtics are building a playoff team IMO, not on the same page to Lakers and Spurs.

Sad, but true. One former Gilbert-reject was just a few months removed from his stint of coaching high school football. Another Gilbert-reject spent most of his cable tv time trashing his now predecessor. That's clearance rack - on the way to Pic n Save territory.

Brad Stevens is a good coach, but also a good coach for Boston's situation which was a rebuild with a bunch of young players and some team-oriented vets. I don't know if he will be able to win them to a championship, but he's on the track to get them there. They should go further in the playoffs this year and should be able to add more talent in the offseason.

As for the Lakers, I think they will need a coach that can work with a young inexperienced team and find the right balance between discipline and motivation. I don't know what happens in the locker room, but from the outside Byron's approach doesn't seem to be working in terms building the players up.

They have a lot of cap space this summer. I think around $53M. They are armed with a lot of draft picks which includes a possible top 3 in this years draft. They also have some decent players to move in a trade. Lots of options for Danny Ainge this summer to better that team.
