Clarkson For 30… The Lakers gave up 15 points and 10 boards to Enes Kanter in the first quarter. That’s the first time a player has put up those numbers in the first quarter all season in the NBA.

It was a poor start for L.A., and after trailing 37-27 from that lack of first quarter D, the Lakers could never close the gap, losing 127-117 to the Thunder. This, despite 30 points, 7 assists and 3 blocks from rookie Jordan Clarkson.

The Lakers changed their starters to move Kelly to PF, sit out Boozer and Hill, and run a Lin/Clarkson backcourt. Offensively, it worked well…defensively, it was well worked.

“It’s hard to beat a team when you give up 66 points in the paint,” substitute coach Pressey said (Scott was out tending to family matters).

“We got to be a little more active on the weakside, a little more active on the rebounds,” Pressey said of the poor team D. “It’s just not on our bigs. Our smalls have to get their share of rebounds.”

They will continue with the experimentation against the TWolves tomorrow in another tank battle.

Clarkson -- -- Lin was knocking on the door to crack the 30-point mark in the last one. Clarkson got it…finally…tonight. Without Kobe, a 30-point game has seemed outside our reach. Both teams played a little loose on D (thus the high score), but Clarkson also had some very nice moves in tight spaces. “I feel like I was just playing aggressive,” he said. I don’t know if this was his best game given how soft the D was at times, but he stuffed the stat sheet. Clarkson led the team in points, tied for lead in assists and led in blocks with 3. That’s your second-rounder. Glad to see him get big minutes. “It’s just a great opportunity for him to improve his game,” Pressey said. Nash said he’s worked with JC, Kelly and Randle. “Jordan’s been an incredible pupil,” Nash said. The Stats: He scored 30 points on 12-19 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He probed baseline and kicked out to Kelly for the three. He missed a pull up from the top of the key. He missed another pull-up from the same area on a mismatch. He drew FTs on a drive and made both. Nice dig down on help D to knock a ball off a Thunder to get a stop. He crashed the glass and put back in a Sacre miss. He missed a three straight away. Wow, he worked off the screen, crossed over between his legs and then back again as the defender behind him reached and missed, then went off glass with the running jumphook for the score. He was picked from behind on the perimeter, not paying attention to his man. He pushed out a turnover and scored a layup. He split a double team, got his feet under him as he approached the runway and threw down with both hands. He missed a short floater. He iso’d and got the short jumper to crawl over the rim. He had 12 points on 5-9 shooting and 3 assists. Second Half: He iso’d and hit the step-back wing jumper. He attacked the paint, spun and no-looked to Kelly who cut right by him and scored the layup. He got away with a travel on the outlet slam (one…two…three…four steps). He blocked a drive on one end, but couldn’t finish the layup on the other. He got tripped on a baseline attack off a kickout for FTs, he made one. He got a switch, sized up the bigman and zone behind him and hit the wing three. He broke down multiple defenders and dumped it to Black for the slam. His perimeter pass was picked off for a layup the other way. He missed a wide open elbow jumper. He went behind his back to Brown for the open jumper. He faked the behind-the-back pass when the defender was a little late and scored the And-1 layup on the break, he missed the FT. He blew past Westbrook and scored an And-1 layup around a big, he made the FT. He sank a long wing three on the swing pass. He pushed up the break and lost the handle trying to go behind his back. He took a pass from Kelly on the break and scored a layup. He challenged the inbounds pass right after that and forced a turnover. He missed a gimmie reverse layup a few seconds later he should have had.

Lin -- -- Clarkson and Lin started tonight and combined for 49 points and 14 assists. Offensively, they had very few issues together as both play fearless, attacking aggressively but also looking for teammates. It flowed well and the team shot 52%. “Either one of us can get it and push it,” Clarkson said. Lin thought it worked well. “We both have different games and we both can spread the floor and attack,” Lin said, mentioning that they both can play the 1 and 2 spots, as needed. Pressey staggered the rotations so one was always on the floor. Unfortunately, Lin finished with a -20 while Clarkson had the +/- of 0. Having Kelly at the PF gives them both a little more room to maneuver, not sure that it was really the problem on the defensive end. “Our weakside wasn’t there,” Lin said. It was horrible. It seemed like a team D thing more than anything else in this one. The rotations weren’t there and it led to easy scores off the same plays. Jeremy said he’s a little under the weather with some sinus issues. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-11 shooting (2-2 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He saved a ball under his own hoop to give up an And-1, uggh. He sank a wing three on the other end to get it back for the Lakers first score. He flagged a bad pass, pushed it up and no-looked to Wes for the dunk. He threw a pass away in the lane, getting caught in the air. He stripped a big from behind, pushed it out and scored the layup in transition, flipping it up high. He attacked and missed a wild drive. He turned the corner and powered up a layup. He hit Black in the lane for a dunk. He attacked, spun and missed the forced jumper. He probed baseline and went up and under on Kanter for the layup. He attacked and kicked to Ellington for the three. He missed a drive. Nice challenge on D to force a miss. He sank a wing three on the other end. He attacked, drew the D and hit Kelly for the corner three. Quick acceleration after taking the pass and he drew FTs, he made one. He slithered through the D at high speed and scored a layup. He had 16 points on 6-9 shooting and 5 assists. Second Half: He iso’d, pulled back the dribble and was run over by Westbrook on the jumper for FTs. He spotted Clarkson open weakside and it led to FTs. He attacked the lane, drew the D and handed it off to Davis for the layup. He attacked the lane with speed off the screen and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked off the high screen and missed at the rim. He was blocked from behind in transition.

Black -- -- The Lakers sat Hill and Boozer tonight and went with the young guys. This should happen a lot. No reason not to at this point. They missed the veteran interior presence for sure as Black and Kelly were out manned in the paint. In the first quarter, Kanter had a 15-10 double-double. It wasn’t just on the bigmen, however, the rotations behind them were horrible (and the Lakers were in a zone for a while). There was very little helping the helper early on. Offensively, Tarik didn’t seem ready for several passes tonight, but he seemed to get on the same page a little better as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 steals, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He blocked a shot from behind. He wasn’t paying attention to a couple passes from Lin, turnovers on both. He attacked and missed a wild drive. He caught the drop off pass from Lin and slammed. He follow slammed a missed three down with a player on the floor under him. He up-faked, attacked and couldn’t finish around a defender with his left. He missed a couple putbacks. He drew FTs on a drive, he made one. Second Half: He slammed off the drive and dish from Clarkson. He bullied his way in closer off the dribble and hit the 6-footer, taking some contact.

Johnson -- -- Sure wish he’d make more of an effort to crash the glass. We needed it tonight, especially with Kelly changing up positions. In a game like this, it’s the perfect time for Wes to be that glue guy on D, flying around the court and making things happen. That just doesn’t occur with much regularity. Offensively, he wasn’t connecting with any frequency and also led the team with turnovers. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-10 shooting (0-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He slammed filling the lane on the break with Lin. He fumbled a pass away, taking his eyes off (easily the team leader in this category, I’m sure). He missed a sideline jumper. He missed an elbow pull-up jumper. Horrible pass trying to create, layup the other way. Second Half: He missed a forced turnaround jumper to start the half. Nice help D rotation to knock a pass away in the paint (more please). He missed an open sideline three. He rattled in a baseline jumper off the inbounds. He attacked left, spun right and drew FTs, he made both. He jab stepped and missed a three. He sank a long wing jumper. He missed a wing jumper. He drew FTs on a loose ball. He missed a long jumper in transition.

Kelly -- -- We started him at PF and later ran him at C for a stretch. He had a good first half and solid overall game. He certainly looked more comfortable out there, although it’s not like he hasn’t played PF this season. So he needs to string together good games rather than this be another one of the sporadic good games surrounded by a stretch of ugly ones. “I definitely think I got a little more involved offensively,” Kelly said, “but I haven’t played that position in a while and I think defensively I was pretty weak. I did a poor job on the boards. It certainly felt nice to get a dunk. I haven’t had one of those in a while being able to get by bigger guys.” He hit a couple of threes, but also was able to attack the rim off the three line as he alluded to when they had to respect that shot and close hard. Let’s see if he can hit the boards harder with a little more focus. He took it personally afterward. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He sank a three on a kickout from Clarkson. He missed an awkward push shot in the paint. He attacked off the three line when the closeout flew by and he slammed. Way short on a wing three. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both. Poor two-man D and he gave up a layup. He swished a corner three on the kickout from Lin. He gave up a board to Kanter who was right behind him. He had 10 points on 3-5 shooting and 2 boards. Second Half: He took the no-looker from Clarkson trailing the action and rode it in for the layup. Quick outlet to Clarkson for the breakaway dunk. He missed a three straight away on the two-man game. He attacked off the three line and had his layup goaltended. He blocked a drive. He pumpfaked a man, moved in closer, pumped again and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a floater.

Davis -- -- Wasn’t thrilled with his game tonight. He had some late reactions on the weakside and was beat down the floor by the opposing big more than once. Offensively, he was fine, not missing a shot and scoring at a high clip considering how few minutes he got, but we needed the defensive presence badly tonight. “They set the tone in the first possession of the game,” Davis said of the Thunder bigs. “I think they had three or four chances at it.” The Thunder definitely took it to the Lakers in that first quarter. Bench guys didn’t change that tone. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-5 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He got beat in transition to give up a dunk. He iso’d and hit a baseline And-1 floater, he missed the FT. Late to react on the weakside and he gave up a dunk. Second Half: He blocked a shot on one end, hustled down court and drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made both. He attacked off the crossover dribble and hit the And-1 running jumper, he missed the FT. He deflected a pass and it ignited the break. He slammed off the two-man game with Ellington. He took a high-low from Sacre and scored the layup. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Lin.

Ellington -- -- Back to the bench, he led the second unit in scoring, sinking three three’s tonight. He was very aggressive, a little too aggressive early on with some of that shot selection. Defensively, he missed rotations and had some poor individual D at times. Sliding Kelly to PF, opens up more minutes at SF for our guys at the expense of Hill and Boozer. I don’t think any fans mind. Honestly, the SF gets an upgrade with Kelly not being there. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-14 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He stripped a man on one end and missed a three on the other. He iso’d and forced up a turnaround brick. He swished the sideline three on the kickout from Lin in transition. He sank a wing three to start the second quarter. He missed a forced three. He missed an off-balance three behind a screen, lost his footing and forced it up still. Second Half: He missed a 20-footer. He missed a reverse in transition. He missed a pull-up in transition. He pushed out the turnover, ball-faked and scored the layup. He hit Davis on the two-man game for the dunk. He up-faked, attacked baseline and powered in the layup. He swished a wing three on a mismatch with a big. He missed a drive. He pushed out the blocked shot and scored a layup. He gave up a baseline dunk.

Sacre -- -- Back in the mix, which usually ends up replacing a good rebounder with a sub-par one in Sacre. Kelly and Sacre aren’t going to dominate on the boards, so the smalls need to do a little better on that team rebounding. Asked what the problems on D were tonight, he said, “Missed assignments, man. That was basically it.” Some rare clarity from him in a post-game interview. Sacre was the only Laker to not score in this one, despite the 117 points. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a jumper he tried to muscle through and over a defender. He was picked from behind for a dunk (Clarkson shouldn’t have given it to him there with a man right behind him anyway). Second Half: He missed the elbow jumper, got it back and hit Davis on the high-low for the layup. He somehow missed a point-blank layup.

Brown -- -- Ellington can get off about 10 more shots than Jabari given similar minutes. There’s a different level of aggression between those two. Frankly, one probably should shoot a little less and the other a little more. It’s also interesting watching the difference between Clarkson and Brown. In college, Clarkson deferred a lot more to him. In the pro’s JC is getting after it much more consistently. It was my one concern (which was quickly put to rest in the summer with JC). Maybe Jabari will be a little inspired with Jordan’s performance tonight and step it up a little more. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a step-back jumper from the top of the key. He missed a three in transition. Second Half: He hit a long wing jumper with his foot on the three line. He missed a wing jumper to start the fourth. He split a double team and scored the And-1 layup around a third defender, he made the FT. He attacked off the high screen and scored the layup.

Pressey -- -- The Lakers trailed 23-14 after 7 minutes. The Thunder getting a lot of early offense action. Quick pace… He sat Clarkson and Johnson for Brown and Ellington, Lakers down 8… He sat Kelly for Sacre, when Kelly picked up a couple fouls. Sacre/Black duo out there, Lakers down 13… The interior D, not looking good. Kanter a 15-10 double-double in the first quarter… He brought in Davis for Black, Lakers down 9… The Lakers trailed 37-27 after the first quarter… He started a Sacre, Davis, Brown, Ellington, Clarkson lineup… They fell back by 13 when the timeout came… He brought in Wes and Lin for Ellington and Brown… He sat Davis for Black midway through the quarter, down 15… Kelly back in to return the starting lineup to the floor shortly later… Lakers two-man D was just ridiculous all half. Thunder bigs just feasting… The Lakers trailed 68-53 at the half. The Thunder had a 28-14 advantage on the glass… The Lakers cut it to 9 and forced a timeout… The Lakers called a timeout when the lead ballooned back to 16… He sat Lin for Ellington midway through the quarter out of that timeout… He brought in Sacre, Davis and Brown for the starting frontcourt… The Lakers trailed 100-88 heading into the fourth quarter… He stared the Sacre, Davis, Brown, Ellington, Lin unit… He brought in Kelly and Johnson for Davis and Sacre, going super small down 15… He brought in Clarkson for Lin with 5 minutes left, going with Black at C, sitting Ellington… Both teams traded hoops, Lakers never catching them…

agreed on Ellington. Chucker mode.

I see him as a player who is looking for the money over anything right now. Csnt blame him, but also don't need that type here right now

Thanks DB. It was fun watching Lin score on Westbrook over and over again . They double-teamed him heavily in the second half. Seems like every team's game plan is focused on limiting Lin now but that doesn't keep him from being aggressive.

Too bad the Lin-Ed connection was discontinued by this new line-up. It was really fun to watch.

Did you guys see Lin's D on Westbrook? Love it!

Props to Clarkson for a new season high.

By the way, Kelly has 11 points.

Thanks DB. The Lin Clarkson combo works well. Perhaps if Lin resigns, they can play with Kobe at SF plus a defensive big and a stretch 4. That will be some offensive fire power.

Do we have a new players trainer? Nash-JC combo has worked out really well.

5 years from now we'll read that Byron Scott "developed" JC. Just like he "developed" Kidd and Paul. And of course that means we can credit Del Harris with "developing" Kobe. Yep...those guys are there teaching footwork, angles, reads. Like Phil "developed" Bynum's raw post moves. My ass...

I was looking forward to the JLin/Clarkson combination for awhile. With a Black Mamba at SF, that appears to be a potent combination that need versatile bigs that can set bone-crushing picks. Understand the logic of RKelly if he was a consistent shooter.

As DB stated, the SF position is critical if the PF is on the perimeter.

Starting to appear that JHill could be a key asset with his performance and contract during the upcoming offseason. If a quality post presence/threat in the post can be acquired . . .

Tanks DB!

nice new backcourt. too bad Lin got neutralized in the 2nd half by the double-teaming else we couldve stole this one. good thing Clarkson capitalized on that and got a season high.

Thanks DB. Congrats to Clarkson. Lin came close the last game but Clarkson hit that magic 30 point game last night and played really, really well in the 3rd quarter.

and that's why it worked. if a team doubles up on one guard, the other can go off. as a tandem, they were great.

we lost because of lack of size inside. and no chemistry on D, yet, for this unit.
