Playing With Fire… This season is backwards. Sometimes wins hurt a little.

I was behind with the early game start, but had the DVR going. Somewhere during the first quarter, I hit the advance 30 seconds button on the remote during a couple FTs. It went all the way to the very end of the game where Clarkson was at the FT line evening things up 100-100. When writing these, this is a bad thing to happen. All the uncertainty and tension is lost…and now I go back and rewatch the whole thing. I decided not to watch the OT, went back and did the work.

An hour later, I catch up with Wayne Ellington on fire in OT. He scored a layup, hit a jumper, a big three, then capped it off and found Jordan Clarkson under the hoop. Clarkson, who had a series of scores in the final minutes of regulation to tie the game and send it to OT, finished the Sixers off with the game-winning layup.

The Lakers beat the Sixers again in overtime, 113-111. Strong efforts in this one from Clarkson (possibly his best game as a pro), Ellington and Jabari Brown (definitely his best game as a pro).

The Lakers advantage over the Orlando Magic in the tank standings just got a whole lot thinner.

Clarkson -- -- Great cut behind the D when Ellington had to pick up his dribble. Ellington found him and Clarkson scored the game winner in OT. “I was really going for the rebound,” Clarkson said. Regardless of intentions, activity led to the win. Prior to that he also he scored a layup and hit a series of FTs in the final minute of regulation to help send the game to overtime. Fans can be upset about the win, but Clarkson’s play and numbers were strong. The Lakers second round pick dropped 26 points, 11 assists, 6 boards and 3 steals in this one. Those are huge numbers. Scott let them work a lot of high screen-roll action. Clarkson’s speed off those and ability to pull-up and hit the midrange or get the rim is not easy to defend. Defensively, also give Clarkson a little credit for a nice challenge in regulation on the Sixers last drive to help force a miss. As much as we talk about all the misc. aspects of his game, something ought to be said about his clutchness. He doesn’t get rattled on freethrows with the game on the line. That cut to the rim to try to tip in the game winner (instead of get the pass) was something we saw him do in the summer league for a win at the buzzer. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 9-15 shooting (0-2 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 11 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He scored a layup cutting off Black and taking the pass. He attacked and dumped it to Black who missed the layup, but got it back and dunked. He swished a 16-footer off the handoff with Kelly. His pass was deflected for a breakaway. He took an inbounds pass over the fronting D and scored a layup. He crossed over to lose a man on a screen and swished the wing pull-up jumper. Nice job deflecting a perimeter pass and it led to an And-1 for Brown on the break. He got tapped on a wing three. He probed and missed the short floater. He probed and missed the layup. He worked the high screen, hesitated, stepped on the gas and drew FTs at the rim on the throwdown attempt, he made one. Nice help D to strip a man, he pushed it up and found Wes for the short jumper. He worked the high screen, pulled up at the FT line and hit the jumper. More good help D to take a ball away, he missed the pull-up transition. He had 11 points, 4 assists and 3 steals in the half. Second Half: He threw a bounce pass away, expecting Kelly to roll when he didn’t. He attacked and kicked to Ellington for the three. He lobbed to Wes on the break for a dunk. He attacked the paint and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. Kelly found him on the break for a layup. He had a pass stolen, but swiped it right back barely a second later. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. He skied for a rebound and reset the offense, he then missed a putback attempt on the glass on the same possession. Quick attack off the high screen and he drew FTs, he made one. He attacked the paint, hung around defenders and hit the short one at the front of the rim. He attacked around a screen and scored a layup with 49 seconds left to tie it up. He attacked with 22 seconds left and tied it up with two FTs. He was nearly trapped and tied up with 14 seconds left on an inbounds but smartly called a timeout. On the subsequent inbounds, he attacked to his left and got hammered on the baseline floater, he made both clutch FTs to tie the game up again with 11 seconds left. We got the stop on the other end as Smith tried to attack him. Overtime: He hit Brown busting out for a layup. He attacked and threw a pass away taking lot of contact in the process. He scored a layup with 0.7 seconds left to win the game on a great pass from Ellington.

Black -- -- He fouled out early. With five fouls, Black started in the fourth quarter. Shortly later, he picked up his sixth foul, fouling out with 11:11 left in the game. Jordan Hill would foul out with 17 seconds left. That resulted in the Lakers play Ryan Kelly at C in overtime (even though they had Sacre). Black is playing better than Sacre, but he needs to elevate his game a little further to close the season. The foul-prone action in this one didn’t help his cause. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 6 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He hit Clarkson cutting for the layup. He missed a layup setup by Clarkson, got it back and slammed it down. He follow slammed some missed guard penetration. He up-faked, attacked to his left and drew FTs, he made both. Second Half: He picked up his fourth foul early in the third. Quick outlet and it led to a Clarkson-to-Johnson lob dunk. He was called for a push foul on the glass, his fifth with 6:44 left.

Kelly -- -- Good second quarter from Kelly, scoring 11 of his 16 points. He sank a huge three with over a minute left in regulation to cut the lead to 2. That shot doesn’t go and this one might be a different outcome. Or Philly just finds another way to lose. Good work challenging shots tonight (he swatted 4 in the game). That was something he showed some ability to do last year at the PF. In OT with the foul trouble to our bigs, we ran Kelly at the C spot. That didn’t seem to hurt the cause. Kelly had one of the highlight plays of the game, a soaring dunk on the dribble at high speed after pushing the ball up court against he press. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting (3-6 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 4 assists, 4 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He traveled on a drive. He missed a jumper from the sideline. He missed a wing three. He missed a wide open three straight away. He blocked a shot off the backboard on one end, then swished a corner three on the other. He sank a sideline three on the catch and shoot. He up-faked on the baseline, drew contact and flipped in the And-1 reverse, he made the FT. He drew more FTs on the defensive glass. He had 11 points on 3-6 shooting in the half. Second Half: He gave up an offensive board, but rejected the putback attempt. He blocked Smith’s layup out of bounds. Extra pass from the perimeter to Clarkson on the break for a layup. He missed a three. He pushed the dribble out of the backcourt, picked up speed and crammed down the massive dunk. He sank a huge, clutch three with 1:35 left to cut the lead to 2. Overtime: He blocked a layup from behind. He was called for a touch foul with 25 seconds left down 2 to give up FTs (Sixers missed both but got it back).

Johnson -- -- Aside from the turnovers, including a big miscue in OT, another good, active effort from Wes. He finished with a double double and 3 blocks and 2 steals. The activity stats were strong in this one. Unfortunately, he clanked a lot of jumpers, finishing with just 12 points on 16 shots. Not good. He’s clankfest from the perimeter nearly helped the tank, but if you needed a win, it helped keep the Sixers in things. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-16 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 blocks, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a three on the Lakers first attempt. He drew FTs and missed both. He missed a long wing jumper. He missed a one-hander in the post. He hit a baseline pull-up in transition. Nice touch on an inbounds pass over the fronting D to Clarkson for a layup. He threw a pass out of bounds. He sank a short baseline jumper in transition. He dunked off the extra pass from Ellington in a scramble. He missed a wing jumper. Second Half: He hit a pull-up over a defender in the middle of the lane. He tied up a man to save a layup. He bricked a pull-up jumper at the FT line. He deflected a pass on one end and then threw down the lob pass on the break on the other. He missed a wing jumper. He missed a short jumper. He missed a three straight away. He missed a layup after bobbling a great pass from Clarkson. He crashed the glass on the missed Clarkson FT and drew FTs (nice activity), he made both. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. Sloppy inbounds pass was picked off and it led to a massive And-1 dunk the other way. Overtime: He fumbled a ball out of bounds on the sideline. He rejected a bigger man at the rim after giving up an offensive board. He missed an open sideline three.

Ellington -- -- Well...he came up huge in OT: A layup, a jumper and what should have been a dagger three with 1:40 left. The Lakers nearly coughed up the lead, but on the final play Ellington found an open Clarkson under the hoop for the game winning layup. He sank four three’s tonight and if it wasn’t for him the Lakers most likely would have fell. It’s painful in the grand scheme of things. For Ellington, it’s probably one of his better games of his career considering how instrumental he was. In the fourth when the Lakers fell back by 8 points with 5 minutes left, Wayne answered with a big three. Good job, Wayne. Painful for him to return to Philly where he had tragedy earlier this season, but he played his game well. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-15 shooting (4-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: His man backed off him so he swished a three. He missed a 21-footer from the wing. He hit Sacre off the two-man game for a jumper. He missed a three when a defender sagged off. He drew FTs on a wing jumper, he made both. He threw a pass away in a crowd. He probed the lane and missed a layup, but Black hammered it back down. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He drew a charge moving his feet well to defend a drive. He attacked the paint and was rejected badly. Nice extra pass to Wes in tight quarters to set up a dunk. He missed a step-back jumper. Second Half: Stupid pass on the perimeter when Wes was crowded by a defender, turnover. He hit a pull-up 18-footer. He sank an open corner three on the kickout from Clarkson. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a wing three. Big answer on a three, down 8 with 5 minutes left, he trimmed the lead back to 5. Overtime: First possession, he was stripped on the perimeter forcing a Laker foul to prevent a layup the other way. He attacked from the corner with all kinds of space and scored a layup. He crossed over and hit the 20-footer. He swished a dagger wing three with 1:40 left to go up 6. He attacked, picked up his dribble at the elbow, then found Clarkson under the hoop for the winner.

Hill -- -- Hill fouled out at the end of regulation. Maybe this was a key to the Sixers win. He wasn’t making much of an impact in this game and the Scott really runs a lot of offense through in down the stretch of games. Good job on the offensive boards, but he struggled to get second-chance points off of those. He also got badly rejected on a throwdown attempt. Defensively, not much of an impact. In fact, he gave up two And-1s early on. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 6 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He gave up a couple of And-1s. He was called for a charge in the post, then a delay of game. Second Half: He faced up and missed a baseline jumper. He got a couple kind bounces and his jumphook dropped in. Wild pass into a crowd, turnover. He grabbed an offensive board and was stripped. He pulled down an offensive board and missed the short one. He missed a jumphook in the paint, got it back and missed again. He missed a short baseline jumper. He drew FTs in the paint. He got rejected badly on a dunk attempt, but bailed out by a bogus whistle, wow, he missed both that he didn’t deserve. He missed a layup around his man, hustled back and stole the interior feed. He got a goaltend call on a bank attempt in the post. He fouled on with 17 seconds left.

Brown -- -- This is the kind of game we wanted to see from him. Great seeing the Mizzou duo both getting 20+. From a personal standpoint, he picked a good time for it with the second 10-day contract ending. From a big picture standpoint, with Lin out, the 22 from Brown helped the Lakers take this one in a big way. Great job hitting threes, getting to the line and creating from the midrange. Kid is just looking to scratch his way into the league. Big step forward in that regard. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-10 shooting (3-4 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a three trying to beat the buzzer. He sank an open wing three on the catch and shoot. He scooped up a loose ball and took it the distance for the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Second Half: He curled into the lane and took contact, he made both FTs. He sank an open sideline three. He stepped back on iso and hit the three with 3 seconds left in the quarter. He attacked and swished the step-back 19-footer up against the shotclock. He curled into the paint and missed the floater. He attacked, pulled back the dribble to lose his man and hit the 17-footer. He crossed over, attacked and was stripped in the paint. Aggressive attack in transition to draw FTs with 2 minutes left down 4, he made both. Overtime: He scored a layup on the outlet from Clarkson.

Sacre -- -- With both Hill and Black fouling out, Sacre was the last big of those we wanted to play. Scott kept him on the bench for OT, going with Kelly instead. Good effort on the offensive glass in this one. He really did seem like he had more than 3 boards, so for once, those stats may be deceiving. He and Wes had the team low -10s in this game. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 3 boards (2 offensive), 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He bricked an elbow jumper badly. He sank a sideline jumper off the two-man game. He swatted a drive. He tipped in a missed jumper. He missed a jumphook in the post. He fumbled a ball, recovered and hit the hook in the middle of the lane. Second Half: He missed a face-up sideline jumper. Good battle on the offensive glass to draw a foul.

Scott -- -- Painful win for the Lakers in the tank wars. The game was almost a loss… Early on Sacre in for Black after 5 minutes as the fouls started… The Lakers were doubled up 22-11 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… He brought in Brown for Clarkson out of that… The Lakers trailed 28-17 after the first quarter… Hill picked up early foul trouble… He started a Sacre, Kelly, Johnson, Brown, Clarkson lineup… Ellington in to relieve Wes at SF… The Lakers tied it up on an 8-0 run… Sacre back in for Black midway through the quarter after another foul by Black… Wes came back in for Brown, Lakers down 2 with 4 minutes left… The Lakers led 51-50 at the half after the high scoring 34-point second quarter… They pushed out to a 7-point lead, forcing a timeout… Black picked up his fifth foul midway through the quarter. Hill came in for him, Lakers up 5… Lakers up 2 when Brown came in for Ellington, Clarkson staying on the floor… The Lakers led 76-71 heading to the fourth… He started a Black, Hill, Johnson, Brown, Clarkson unit… Black quickly fouled out and Sacre came in for him, Lakers up 6… Clarkson out and Ellington in. Lakers gave up three straight breakaway scores to trail by 4 with under 8 minutes left… The Lakers still trailed by 4 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. He brought back in Kelly for Sacre, sliding Hill to C… They fell back by 8 with 5 minutes left. Ellington hit a three, then they got a shotclock violation on the Sixers. Then Clarkson returned for Johnson… They cut it to a hoop with 2 minutes left, then gave up a big three to go back by 5… Tied 100-100, the Sixers had the ball and could work for the last shot. Instead they attacked right away and drew FTs with 17 seconds left. They made both… Timeout with 17 seconds left, Laker ball. After another timeout, Clarkson attacked and drew more FTs to tie it up. Overtime… The Lakers league leading ninth overtime… He started the Kelly, Johnson, Ellington, Brown, Clarkson unit. Small with lots of floor spacing… Lakers start with two turnovers. The Sixers counter with two turnovers in three possessions… Up 2, Lakers foul to give up FTs, Sixers missed both but got their second miss and called timeout. They tied it with 11 seconds left… Ball in Ellington’s hands. He picked up his dribble, but found Clarkson under the hoop for the win…

Thanks
Can't blame the players for giving it their all. Maybe the basketball gods will smile on us when the lottery comes up.

Thanks, DB! I still much appreciate the hard work you do for us.

This season has been another painful season to watch. I am certain people are panicking over the tank war now but it has been fun watching Clarkson, Lin, Davis, and now, Jabari play well. Clarkson looks like the real deal and Mitch should get credit for that. BS has also done good job giving these guys a chance to develop and playing tough games all season long despite the roster.

Thanks DB

These two evenly matched were battling hard to win (ahem lose) the game

The Philly team (in a strange way) reminded me of how a very athletic college team (aka Kentucky) would do in the pros - lots of fun but not enough skills

The more the team plays, the less value is attached to Swaggy P. Maybe he and Iggy would be great in NYC if the Zen Master wants him

JHill would be a great reserve for a title contending team that trade draft choices for him (hello Boston or Philly who have many picks and where JHill can be dominant in the Eastern Conference where the quality of the bigs are much lower than the Western Conference

Bizarro statement of the day: It was a disappointing win.

Nevertheless, JC made a great play. He was being denied the ball when the play began, but managed to make the right basketball move at the right time. Very clutch at the line. Impressive. Maybe the Lakers feel they got such a steal with JC that the lotto pick isn't that important.

You could tell the Sixers were in tank mode when they kept running plays through Noel, a poor FT shooter, in crunch time.

We had two meaningless W's on this 5 game road trip. I really hope we don't lose our top 5 pick. I would be extremely frustrated if that were to happen.

They hit it out of the park in the draft last year, for sure. The chance to land another stud on rookie contact, a possible impact player/All Star...when you are rebuilding... you can't piss that away when it's in your grasp.
