The Magic Number… With the Laker loss and the Magic win tonight, the Lakers guaranteed their fourth position in the lottery with just four games left. Now, they’ll hope the basketball gods are on their side come lottery day.

For now, you can at least take a breath and open your eyes again. What’s done is done.

I wonder how many Laker fans dozed off in this one and still have their eyes closed. With Clarkson struggling early on and Lin out, there wasn’t a lot to keep your attention. The Lakers made sure of that, giving up a 30-6 run in the third quarter.

From that point on, it was all garbage time in the 119-101 loss to the Nuggets. The Lakers actually started the fourth quarter 10-10, but didn't make a dent in the lead. The defense was awful.

Clarkson -- -- He struggled to get things going early on, missing his first several shots. He set up teammates, however, at a consistent rate. A little sloppy at times, but a good job breaking down the D and finding bigs for easy scores. A good chunk on his scoring came in garbage time. So while he still put up decent numbers, they weren’t of the same quality as last night’s. At the end of the night, he led the team with 21 and 9. Good job staying aggressive. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-18 shooting (0-3 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 9 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: He missed a FT pull-up jumper. He swiped a ball and hit Kelly on the break for the dunk. His bounce pass was picked off in the paint. He attacked and set up Davis for the And-1 layup. He fumbled a ball away, then committed a dumb clear-path foul to compound the mistake. He missed a wing three. He attacked around the trap, drew another defender and hit Black who was hacked for FTs. He missed a wide open wing three. He changed directions nicely to lose a man, then missed the easy scoop. He missed a wing three. He swiped a pass and pushed it up to finally score a layup in transition. He attacked the paint and dumped it off to Davis for the layup. He missed an easy layup across the lane. He swished an 18-footer working off the Davis screen and rescreen. He crossed over to lose his man, then biffed the layup. He hit Kelly on the two-man game for the open three. He took a handoff and was fouled on the throwdown attempt (looked like a pretty good block), he made both. He missed a two-for-one wing jumper. He traveled on a kickout. He had 6 points, 5 assists and 1 board. Second Half: He drained a controlled elbow pull-up working off the two-man game. He hit Black under the hoop for the easy score. His pass to Kelly was deflected, turnover. He was rejected badly on a layup. He threw up a wild, off-balance leaner (looked like he had no plan on that one). He drew FTs and made both. He hit a floater off a jump step. He sank a couple of FTs. Burst of speed to beat his man and he dumped it to Sacre for the uncontested layup. He sank an elbow pull-up jumper. He attacked down the lane, hung and flipped in a backhanded scoop layup. He swiped an outlet, took it the distance and went behind his back to Davis, who hustled down court for the dunk. He spun and missed a wing jumper. He pushed the ball up, stepped on the gas and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT.

Black -- -- He had a -24 in just 17 minutes. Kenneth Faried finished with 29 points on 10-14 shooting with 11 boards. That’s about how the game felt. We weren’t up for the challenge tonight. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He drew FTs on a spin move in the post to start the game, he made one. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Clarkson, he missed both. He ball faked and attacked down the middle of the lane for the dunk. He missed an 18-footer. Second Half: He swiped a bad lob pass. Low position and Clarkson found him for the easy one.

Brown -- -- With Lin out with left knee issues, Jabari got the start. So we went with Black, Kelly, Johnson, Brown and Clarkson as starters. Wow. Not impressive. And that can’t make any of their jobs any easier. Poor shooting night in his first start, unfortunately. He actually led all the starters with just 4 rebounds...another wow. Despite playing with his buddy Clarkson, they didn’t look particularly dynamic out there. Certainly not close to the Lin/Clarkson duo. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: His pass ahead to Black in transition was picked off. He missed a short floater. He missed a wing three. He attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked the paint and missed, but Davis easily cleaned it up. He swished a sideline three on a catch and shoot. He missed a sideline three. He missed a 20-footer in transition. Second Half: He was fouled on a three to start the half, he made all three. He attacked, spun to lose his man badly, then choked the layup. He missed a wing three. He attacked and missed a layup (had Davis open behind him in the middle of the paint). He was blocked trying to score on the break. He grabbed a loose ball, attacked and scored at the front of the rim. He sank a long baseline jumper.

Kelly -- -- He tried to balance the scales from last night’s horrific game with an efficient, productive night. Good job knocking down the shots tonight. Not easy to bounce back after such a poor outing 24 hours earlier, but there’s always another game in the NBA to give you that opportunity. I still can’t get past just 1 rebound in 33 minutes. That’s awful. Every single other Laker on the floor out-rebounded him. He needs to show some pride in that area. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-8 shooting (2-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He and Clarkson forced a turnover on a trap, and Clarkson hit him in transition for the dunk. Looked like he was on his way to a sure dunk or layup and was stripped off his leg from behind, turnover. He swished a three out of a timeout. He picked up two fouls on one sequence. He over-passed on the break instead of finishing a layup, horrible. He missed a sideline three. He drew three FTs getting fouled on the three, he made all three. He posted up the smaller Barton and hit the And-1 turnaround nicely under control (didn’t fade, didn’t overpower too much), he missed the FT. He swished an open three straight away. He blocked a three at the end of the half. He had 13 points on 4-6 shooting (2-3 from three). Second Half: He posted up and swished the step-back fade against the smaller defender (he usually misses those). He attacked baseline against the shotclock and reversed nicely. He gave up an easy layup on a drive. Nice feed in traffic to Davis for the score.

Johnson -- -- He got a little shot crazy in the third quarter when the Lakers started to slip. This only threw fuel on the fire, and he emptied the gas can as we went up in flames. Woooosh. Ball game over. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and 5 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He sank a wing three on iso. He banked a wing jumper looking for the foul call. Second Half: He missed the baseline pull-up against the shotclock. He missed a 21-footer out of a timeout. He missed another long jumper. He attacked and scored a layup. He missed a long wing jumper. He missed a long wing three. He took the handoff, elevated and airballed the three. He missed a wing three.

Davis -- -- A healthy double-double from Ed tonight. He hit the boards hard, pulling down 5 on the offensive end. Good job finishing around the rim. Not so good job from the line with his frozen ropes. Scott can safely give him minutes to close the season now. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting (3-8 from the line) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He scored an And-1 layup when Clarkson set him up, he made the FT. He dunked back in the dribble penetration miss by Brown. He was stripped in the post. He hit an And-1 jumphook working the left block, he made the FT. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Clarkson. He drew FTs crashing the glass on the Clarkson miss. He had 10 points on 4-5 shooting and 6 boards. Second Half: He was called for a carry. He was blocked on a layup. He scored a layup taking some contact and no call. He clanked a couple of FTs. He hustled down court off the Clarkson steal and Jordan rewarded him with the pass for the dunk. He drew more FTs on the offensive glass and made one.

Buycks -- -- He had the DVR playback play of the night as he put a rookie on his ass on a pull-back dribble, then measured and drained the three. Career high scoring night for Dwight with the 15 points. He was a little sloppy with the ball at times but is starting to look more comfortable in everything he does. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and no fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He missed a wing jumper on iso. He lost Faried on a pull-back dribble for a wing jumper. He hit Sacre for the open jumper. He probed off the screen and pulled up for the very short bank, nicely done. He pushed up the ball with a few seconds left, got a little out of control, but drew a foul with 1.2 left in the quarter, he made one. He fumbled away the ball on the break. He didn’t see Clarkson wide open for a lob in transition. He attacked to his left and windmilled in a layup. He airballed a three on iso, yikes. Second Half: He curled into the lane, jump stepped around the help D and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was tripped on a drive for FTs, he made both. He put Harris on his backside with a pull-back dribble, then measured and sank the three (that got the bench up). He dove to recover a loose ball down 20. Bad kickout and it led to a dunk the other way. He was blocked on a drive.

Sacre -- -- Good to see him finally get the rebound numbers to where they need to be. He was one board shy of a double-double. The jumper looked good tonight. The dunk? Not so much. He missed a point-blank throwdown not getting up enough. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He missed a face-up wing jumper, but hustled back in transition to deflect a pass. He sank an open wing jumper next time down. He couldn’t secure a defensive board off a missed FT and it led to a hoop. He missed an 18-footer. He got his man to bite on a fake and then leaned in to hit the bank jumper just before the shotclock went off. He drew FTs taking a pass under the hoop, he made both. Weak seal and his man knocked a post entry pass away. Second Half: He was called for an offensive foul trying to create in the post. He knocked down a turnaround jumper in the post. He iso’d in the post, was stripped, then fouled, well done. Clarkson put it in his lap for an uncontested layup. He missed a point-blank dunk, no elevation.

Scott -- -- The Lakers quickly trailed 13-3 when the timeout came after a little more than 3 minutes… Davis in for Black, Lakers down 9… They were down 10 when Buycks came in for Clarkson midway through the quarter… Sacre in for Kelly down 14 with 5 minutes left… Kelly back in for Wes… Strong close to the quarter by the Lakers… The Lakers trailed just 35-33 after the high-scoring first quarter… He started the Sacre, Davis, Kelly, Clarkson, Buycks lineup… Up 4, he brought in Black for Davis… The Lakers led 45-41 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… He brought in Brown to run at SF against the bigger Chandler. Stealth tank move… The Lakers trailed 58-54 at the half. The Lakers had a 23-8 advantage on the bench scoring… With Clarkson struggling the Lakers started to slip back further, timeout. Lakers down 10… The lead ballooned to 20 when the timeout came with a couple minutes left… The Lakers trailed 93-70 heading into the fourth… He started a Sacre, Davis, Kelly, Brown, Buycks lineup… Both teams had shotclock violations to start the quarter. Wow. If you aren’t asleep yet, that will do it… The Lakers went 10-10 to start the fourth and still trailed by 22… Just no D…

My question exactly!
Would be nice to finish the season with a small winning streak... You know, to build a habit.

Thanks DB. Nearing the finish line on a terrible season, appreciate the T&R's through the worst of this drought. Here's hoping for a good bounce in May on lotto day.
