|
|
Good read.
Is Magic Johnson's Dream to Own the Los Angeles Lakers Fueling Rift with Team?
Quote: | Even before Jerry's death, there was a sense that his outline for son Jim (basketball) and daughter Jeanie (business), who have sometimes been at odds over the years, to run the Lakers might not stand the test of time. While Jim incurs Johnson's wrath for the team's ongoing struggles, Jeanie is the only one of the five next-generation Buss shareholders to have a relationship with Johnson—and it remains a close one. Johnson spent time at the recent All-Star Game in New York with Jeanie and fiancee Phil Jackson.
Johnson's longtime business associate, Lon Rosen, was Jeanie's agent for her 2010 autobiography—and the first breathless blurb on her Laker Girl book jacket came not from Jackson or former NBA Commissioner David Stern, but from Johnson.
The central question when it comes to Johnson's criticism of Jim Buss is whether it's driving toward some greater gain.
Is Johnson's endgame to have Jim vacate, see the Buss children decide together to sell majority ownership and seize that opportunity to make utopia real with himself as a Lakers owner with true control?

Garbage. Completely thew Mike D'Antoni under the bus and then turned the other cheek when his "buddy" was hired and yielded the same results. |

It is interesting that one sibling who seems to understand that others are trying to divide and conquer them (as his father also knew) is the one most people go after. |

Question that I've always wondered.
It's clear Magic and Dr. Buss had a great relationship. Magic knowing what Dr. Buss wanted (his son to be part owner), would he really want to usurp Jim? Magic would have to feel guilt for doing something Dr. Buss clearly wouldn't have wanted, correct?
The whole angle of him wanting to be in Jim's position totally makes sense to me. However, I have a tough time fully grasping the thought that Magic would be that ruthless/guilt free. |

Lots of people can have a relationship with one person and a completely different set of priorities when that person is gone. Theres an entire specialty of law (probate) based on this fact. |

I remember at Dr. Buss' funeral Magic said please don't ever sell
the team. Keep it in the family. Something to that effect. It's probably got to be killing Magic inside to see the franchise fall to historic lows. Just like how many of us fans feel. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

Would like to see that. Jean continues her job, Mitch is still GM and Jim is fired. |

Bastard really?
It's amazing how classless some of our fans are and how disrespectful they're in regards to argurably the greatest Laker ever.
Makes me wonder if people will turn on Kobe someday. |

Probably. People already turned on Kobe back in 2007 before Gasol came along as well so it's not too surprising.
I would welcome this myself. Can't be any worse than Jimbo. |

People said the same thing about Mike Brown.
And then Dantoni.
And now Scott.
Magic is too emotional for my liking from an ownership perspective. |

I haven't watched Baseball in a while but didn't he make the Dodgers more relevant since his ownership there? |

More relevant? They've always been relevant no? Better? Not quite. Not yet anyway. Not sure they're quite the same but I guess time will tell. Watched any Dodgers games on TV yet? Yikes. |

Magic is one of my all time favorite Lakers... but honestly... after his playing days ended, he has become one of my least liked people with regards to the Lakers organization. _________________ A three headed monster... Jeannie, Pelinka, and Ham... another terrible season. |

what was the reason to bash Jim buss most recently when he himself at the beginning of the yr hoped the lakers lose every game and get a higher pick |

It can be worse than the worst Laker teams in franchise history? Including a franchise record 60 losses? |

I never thought you were a bad Consigliari. I thought Santino was a bad Don, rest in peace. Michael has all my confidence as do you. But there are reasons why you must have nothing to do with what's going to happen. |

It's ok though, the flock will line up behind Magic if he ever obtains majority interest. If you can rally behind Jimbo, you can rally behind anyone. |
