I know keeping the pick this year will be essential and the pending free agency will determine how far we go in the near future. But, if all goes well on both regards.. how soon can we make the playoffs in the loaded west?
I would love the team to make it next season. You never know. But realistically they should have a really good playoff ready roster for the 2016-17 season. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold.

Cory Joseph and Danny Green are real possibilities for the Lakers, I would put Kobe at the 3 and Green at the 2 next season with Joseph backing Clarkson.

We don't need that much to make the playoffs next season.
New Orleans made it and was only eight games above .500.
With a healthy Kobe, Randle having a good rookie year, and Clarkson continuing to grow and improve plus a lottery pick we're easily at least 15 games better.
Add in one good free agent like Middelton, Green, or Jordan and we're a playoff team.

We would have to win about 30 to 35 more games next season, I just don't see it unless the team gets a super hot start.

The question was more about realistic. And hoping for a healthy Kobe for the whole season is more wishful thinking than realistic.
Clarkson improving, Randle having a good rookie year, yes at great stuff. But even then, we would probably have to win 47/48 games just to make the 8th seed. Pelicans just barely got in winning 45 this year true but next season is gonna be tougher IMO.
How can you think we will not make the playoffs next year?
We have kobe and randle coming back, clarkson developing, a top 5 draft pick, and hopefully one decent free agent : DJ, lamarcus Aldridge, gasol, love.
I think we will be 8th seed next year, and even so, we can be a dangerous 8th seed like okc was in 2009. We have the same young guns okc did in2009 in clarkson, randle, and our top 5. _________________ Billions Billions Billions

Even with those moves, the West is still loaded, and our young guns will still be developing. You damn near have to win 50 games to be an 8th seed. _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up."-The Greatest

I think someone bought up the sentiment that the Lakers will probably package some of the young players in a bigger trade... that is most likely the plan...
as far as the Lakers making the playoffs.... I think it depends if the Lakers pull off a big trade during the summer and how much there willing to spend in FA.

we really need a frozen envelop for that to happen, since next year's pick is only top 3 protected. If things break right, I think we can hover around .500 next season, with the young players developing and some FA signing in 2017, we should be back in the playoffs. _________________ Ringo "You retired too?"

(bleep). So really, we're losing a lottery pick no matter what, even if we don't get unlucky this year. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

We only lose the lottery pick next year IF we keep the lottery pick THIS year.

It is too early to definitely say that it will be a Lottery Pick that gets sent to Philly (or some other debt collector).
However, the Lakers will eventually need to fulfill that obligation because it contains no conditional provision so that it would be extinguished by the passage of time.
2015 first round draft pick to Philadelphia
L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Phoenix) protected for selections 1-5 in 2015, 1-3 in 2016 and 1-3 in 2017 and unprotected in 2018 [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012; Milwaukee-Philadelphia-Phoenix, 2/19/2015]

2017.
Contending for a playoff spot isn't a very ambitious goal though. Phoenix contended for a playoff spot this year.
And the truth is, if they got in, they'd be worse off.
I would rather be anywhere than first round playoff purgatory. That (bleep) might fly elsewhere, but not in Lakerland.
I get that 90%+ of championship teams had chunks of their roster lose in the playoffs. It's the step between where we are now and a chip.
But I hope that stage of the climb back to championship basketball is short-lived _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”
