Roscoes Chicken and Waffles and In-n-Out Burger are good places to start.

Hot dog stands. Find one with bacon wrapped around the dog with peppers and onions.... So good

But traditionally I agree with top comment

Pinks Hot Dog Stand
The Pantry
Roscoes Chicken and Waffles
In and Out
Mastros Steakhouse
All the Mexican food to your hearts content
Not really stuff people eat everyday but stuff I recommend when visiting LA.

Great food is not an issue in LA. It really depends on what your preferences are. You should have led with that, because pretty much everyone in the area can give you great recommendations. If you're looking for a great burger:

Lazy Ox Canteen
Oaks Gourmet Market
Rustic Canyon Wine Bar (little farther out)

I'm a big fan of Crossroads Kitchen, and if you want to watch a movie and eat good food, then you have to go with iPic Theaters for an awesome experience.

lakersken80 has a good list. If you like steak I would add Fleming's to it. But again, lakersken80 has a very good and practical list to choose from. Lastly, track down a Mexican shrimp cocktail (add a lime squeeze and some Tapatio) and have a beer. You will not regret it friend.

Pretty much. Its hard to come up with a better list unless you are more specific. You want fast food? Ethnic food? Fine dining? Food trucks?

Yeah. I think your list gives a very good variety of common LA favorites. That's what I'm assuming he was aiming for when he made this thread. Looks like you nailed it. Some might add King Taco, but I've never been a big fan personally. Roscoes Chicken and Waffles is bad ass.

Langer's if you're near downtown or Canter's if you're on the west side for good deli.

Samba's Brazilian Barbeque in Redondo Beach. Great mojitos there.

Paul Martin's in Manhattan Beach is good for lunch. Try the 3 mushroom burger and the pesto cole slaw.

IMO Flemings is the worst mid-upper tier steakhouse chain. I dont think they hold a candle to Mastros.

Honestly, I've never been to Mastro's. I've been to Fleming's a dozen times and every time was better than the last. I quit eating meat this year (seafood exempt) so unfortunately I can't say "I will check it out." But steak is by far my favorite food on our beautiful planet. It pains me to say I trust your opinion, and I know I'm missing out.

The best steaks I've ever had in my life were in Paris France, and to my surprise, Las Vegas NV.

I would add Lawry's to the list for a delicious prime rib dinner.

I was over in Wyoming and South Dakota and had some bison. It tastes way better than beef, imo.

Anyone know where in Los Angeles can I get a well prepared bison steak?

Big fan of Titos when it comes to cheap and cheesy food. But I'm not sure I would make that a must do suggestion for someone who is hoping to make the most of LA Cuisine.

If I were going to suggest iconic LA food that was also a decent meal, I'd go more along the lines of Casa Vega in the Valley or Don Antonio's on the Westside. They may not be the best Mexican food the city has to offer, but they certainly bridge the idea of good food and LA icons.

On a different note. If you want to pick up a sandwich on the Westside to eat later in your day, you can't go wrong with Bay Cities Italian Deli in Santa Monica. That place is awesome and as LA centric as it gets. I would suggest the Godmother sandwich, but it's all good.

Love 5 guys! I get food their at least once every other week. Great Burgers. But they're located all across the US.

OP, all these places I'm about to name are in downtown LA.

"The Pantry" is a popular historical diner for breakfast food. Be prepared to wait in a line to get in, and they only take cash. If you don't want to wait, "The Farm" at LA Live has better breakfast food IMO. You could easily run into ESPN Sportscenter host Stan Verrett there as well.

If you want a restaurant with a great view go to "Perch" or "Takami Sushi".
If you don't mind spending a fortune ($80-$120 per person just on food). Make a reservation at "Wolfgang Puck 24".

If you want to see ESPN personalities go to "Luxe" on Figueroa.
Had great basketball convos with Jalen Rose and Avery Johnson when I went there (on separate occasions).

Blech. Nothing says diarrhea like greasy undercooked burgers with overly salted cardboard fries. Free peanuts are ok.

Not to mention that 5 Guys is not an LA experience in the least.

Well, the thirst you get in a few hours after your sodium intake just quadrupled is.

Just thought of one very LA experience food wise. Well maybe not food-wise, but along the same lines.

Musso and Frank. It does't get any more LA than that and it has huge history. There are tons of Hollywood greats who were regulars.
