Some of the hip-hop classics that PLATNUM mentioned above, for me I'd add the following too:

2Pac - All Eyez On Me
2Pac - Makaveli (Th 7 Day Theory)
DMX - It's Dark & Hell Is Hot
DMX - ...And Then There Was X
Nas - Illmatic
Dr Dre - 2001
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

My childhood best friend was a bigtime Nirvana fan, so we listened to their Nevermind album a lot, was a good album, even if I'm not generally into tat type of thing.

Just re-watched the DVD of that a few daze ago. Like those live takes of Pennyroyal Tea and About A Girl more than the studio versions. I remember Ocho awhile ago mentioning the cover of In The Pines at the end as the best, but I prefer The Man Who Sold The World cover. You can hear the David Bowie come thru the lyrics even with Kurt singing it.

Free_Kobe (Marley) above listed The Pumpkins. Saw Billy Corgan a few wks ago on That Metal Show. I think The Pumpkins' videos were probably on the whole the most artistic among the other 90s alt bands, save for maybe REM. Corgan may have had too much integrity as an "ar-TEEST" because he was more than happy to stray from the "success model" once he found it in lieu of just continuing to produce the same music to make money. HBO is currently running a Cobain doc called "Montage Of Heck" where Kurt says something along the same lines, [para] "We're prepared to destroy our careers if need be," meaning it's our decision. Even if Cobain were still alive today (you'd have to take away his suicidal psychology first, but...), I think he would've dismantled Nirvana as we knew them anyway, one way or another. According to Courtney, he would say he wanted to make 3 million and become a junkie.

A little out of the range, but Busta Rhymes, It Ain't Safe No More is a great one from 2002 that I think is underrated. Or at least used to be by me.
