When it comes down to drafts where big men (PF/C) are the #1 and #2 pick, there have been a few exceptions like Brown, Chandler in 2000 and Bargnani, Aldridge in 2006, but history generally doesn't favor the team picking second getting the better big man.

Sounds like building through the draft and all that tanking is a myth. Trading for proven players is the way to go.

Thats whats scares you the most. All that tanking only to draft a bust. Its not like the NFL were you can get Tom bradys in the later rounds. If i had to take a guess i'd say Towns is the more likely bust.

Then let Minnesota have him.

I really dislike this tank idea even more after seeing those lists. Of course it still is a cheap way to make money with your franchise. But this is the Lakers. Not some cheap franchise going for the quick bucks...

the sample size is much too small and variables much too large to use history as a predictor of something as ridiculously complex as essentially what comes down to predicting an individual's future.

we just gotta trust in mitch, which is easy to do.

Over the past 35 years, five of the #2 picks have made the Hall or are likely to make it (Mourning, Durant, Payton, Thomas, Kidd). But that doesn't mean there is some formula that 1 out of every 7 #2 picks will make the Hall. There isn't any reasonable way to predict what chance an unknown #2 pick has to make the Hall.

Not really. No team in the last 35 years has won a title without a top 5 pick on their team.

I just dont get how all the evaluators , scouts, media, Coaches, GMs etc.. after wacthing these kids throught a entire college hoops season STILL get it WRONG. Was Kobe 13th because he was a HS kid? Did anybody in 1984 after wacthing MJ at Nc really believe he was only 3rd best in that draft?

Whats funny is you would think with all the advanced stats now Busts should be even rare now than 20 years ago. But every year the Wes Johnsons and Anthony Bennetts of the world get picked very high. Could it just be that different factors other than talent play into being a BUST? Like team drafted by, $$$ as in some of these kids reach that point and decide to just give up improving?

I prediction is out of the top 14 this year only 2 will be superstars and a 3rd on will be a somewhat all-star. And no i dont think both Towns and Oakfor will be two superstar bigmen studs , one of them will Bust or fail to live up. I just hope we pick the right one

A lot of it depends on the environment in which they enter the league... the teammates, coaches, surrounding them early to shape their foundation.

I'd reasonably bet that if Kawhi was in a Charlotte scenario he'd be nowhere near the player he is today with the Spurs...

Maybe it's also fun to see which picks became rookie of the year

All lists aside, I think it's great to have a #2 pick in a draft that includes two very talented big men

What is concerning is that the #2 pick has really only produced a top-5 player in that draft (in hindsight) 4 times in the last 20 years.

In the modern draft, you're as just as likely to draft a star at #9 as you're at #2.

Lets take this farce one step further..

#2 picks from Duke...

Jabari Parker
Jay Williams
Danny Ferry

That settles it, Okafor is going to be injured so I guess we have to take Russell.
