What is going on here? I could have sworn you and I had debates about Kobe's place in history. I had him at 6th and I could have sworn you were adamant that he couldn't possibly be 6th and must be at least 4th.
Am I mistaken or have you had a 180 degree change of heart? (Now I have to debate with you as to why he is top 10 and not top 15? Haha)
I would even have a hard time putting 5 players ahead of Kobe. Shooting guards just don't dominate the game in a way that MJ and Kobe have, it's almost against the laws of nature yet they did it, and they are the only 2 to ever dominate the game at that level from that position which to me ranks them higher than a player like Kareem or Wilt. That's just my personal opinion. _________________ "Bryant has been the second best player in the NBA for over a decade, but the number 1 player changes every other year. I'm following this thread and I'm trying to put into words the thing that stands out most about Kobe.
It's the dramatic nature of his highlights. They feel scripted, some of them.
Dunking on Nash a day after losing the MVP race to him.
Dunking on Howard, future HoF for defense.
Dunking on Yao. DUnking on Duncan.
The Brooklyn dunk is probably the most artistic play I can remember.
The Portland game to end the season with playoff standing in question! That's crazy!
He's had rivals for best player alive, and he's done embarrassing things to them. Most of them have not done the same to him. That's very special.
Another thing about his impossible shots or crazy dunks. Sure a lot of others have similar shots. But if you go back and look at them, you will see that a lot of them are with the game on the line...the Lakers are within 1 point or so. I noticed that a while ago, and I don't see the same for other guys. A lot of spectacular plays are done by others when they are up or down by a lot. Kobe does it when it's still tense. It's different.
All you need to do is consider Kobe scoring 40+ points in 9 straights games where he scored 50+ points in 4 straight games including a 65 point game in that 9 game stretch not to mention an 81 point game and tell me who the hell is better than that?
If I could draft anyone of any era it would be 1. Shaq 2. Kobe 3. Jordan

It wasn't the same season. The 9 straight games with 40+ were in 02-03 and the 4 straight with 50+ in 06-07.

The consensus amongst basketball experts is that Kobe is somewhere between 6-10 on the GOAT lists.
6-10 is about right depending on preference of longevity or peak.
My top 5
MJ/Kareem
Wilt
Russell
Magic
Next 6 not in particular order
Kobe
Duncan
Lebron
Shaq
Hakeem
Bird
Btw I can't find the video but my favorite dunk was the one against the Kings where he drove past Christie on the baseline and reverse dunked it.
I don't put Russell in my top 5 simply because the era he played in was really inferior to the modern era (80s to current day) _________________ Lake Show

You're right. In 2007 he scored 65, 50, 60 and 50. Not even MJ has scored 50+ in 4 straight games. Only Wilt has and he did 7 straight games.
Who other than Wilt can say they averaged over 56ppg in a 4 game stretch.
Lebron 6 final appearances... Just one short of Kobe
3 short of Finals victories which is what actually matters.
Kobe is the greatest most spectacularly skilled player Ive ever seen. He's top 3 all time imo.
I love number 8, one of the most prolific scores ever, but you cant deny Bron efficience. The guy plays alone and brings his teans to finals every other year. No hate here.

thanks for posting this. This video proves my point when i explain about the different eras of basketball and how guys could be defended vs nowadays where you cant get up in guys without a foul call. For some odd reason the refs let them play(probably because it was an allstar game). this is how it was in the 90's when kobe started. you could be all up on a guy all the way to the rack and pressure him into a very difficult shot. i'm no sure if LBJ, durant, etc would have the same fg%'s if they had to deal with that kind of defense. as great as i believe curry is and is going to be. i know his fg% would slip a hint. lets not even discuss harden's.
They luxury of not having to deal with that true lockdown defense, is a luxury that jordan, nor kobe , nor magic, nor bird, nor, etc, etc. Let kobe be in his prime getting touch calls like harden and ghost calls like harden. Oh mY. no telling what he would average and how high his fg% would be.

Imagine Kobe in the Leastern Conference from 2005>>>>
No hate here either. But imagine.
in this new soft era of "dont lock anyone down."
kobe would've terrorized the eastern conference. kobe could've taken that same sorry kwame brown and b.cook team into a 4th to 5th spot in the weak east with that kind of world class effort. and probably could've knocked off just about any team in the east. imagine kobe and that terrible group getting to the finals and getting blasted by the spurs. But the story would be "look at kobe take these chumps to the finals." when in reality its kobe in the terrible conference. taking these chumps into the finals. Context is key.
