From Kevin Ding's blog:

Say this much for Andrew Bynum, the kid knows how to star in a show.
In a follow-up to his Jan. 16 dunking and scrapping moment against Shaquille O'Neal, Bynum dominated the fourth quarter at Madison Square Garden with 16 points in very impressive garbage time. Bynum's mother and brother were in the stands to cheer him on, although his teammates were completely into it, too.
"That was kinda fun for the team," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said of Bynum's scoring binge.
Bynum said he heard his teammates cheering for "Socks." He then revealed that has become his nickname on the team ... because he forgot his shower sandals one day and wore socks in the shower.
|
I love his nickname "Socks." Too many nicknames nowadays are either not creative or try to sound hard. Back in the day, nicknames were inspired like this. Like "Shoeless," "The Pearl," "The Babe," "Houdini of the Hardwood," etc. None of this "J-Dub," "K-Mart," and "KG" crap. I give Kobe credit for at least trying to get himself a creative nickname like "mamba," even though you're not really supposed to give yourself a nickname.
Andrew "Socks" Bynum. Awesome.
I shall now henceforth refer to Andrew only as "Socks." Who's with me?? |

Doesn't really sound like it, and if you mean people can make fun of it easily, every name can be made fun of easily. Show-be. K-Fart. J-Bud.
"Socks"is fine. |

I prefer to call him Drew; Socks sounds weird to me, but who knows, maybe i'll come around. _________________ "In essence, the trade was: Shaq, Rick Fox and Gary Payton for Odom, Kwame, Mihm, Profit, 2nd round picks, a 1st round pick and 30 million in luxury tax saviings." - LakerJam

"Socks" doesn't sound any more rediculous the "Buck" (which is what Magic's teammates called him) |

Well I heard Kareem gave him a different nickname:
Big Baby
I suppose it depends on how you say it, cause obviously this one could sound negative! _________________ -

Tennis is fantastic for conditioning. Abomb is the man, and I'd hate to play tennis against him. That dude would smother the net...you can't lob over him to back him off. His serve is probably mean too, with the trajectory it comes from...jeez, maybe ten feet up? |

"Babe" is a name for a girl, and yet it is also the nickname of the most legendary baseball player ever.
A "Pearl" is a jewel girls like to wear, and yet it is also the nickname of one of the greatest street hoopsters ever.
Nicknames don't need to be hard to be good. |

You can masturbate into socks and you can masturbate into a babe, but you can't masturbate into a pearl, I guess, so Andrew Bynum should go down in history at the same level as Babe Ruth. |
