I know the feeling. When Secretariat broke the last streak, I was excited. Then I never watched another horse race. |

The GOAT in thoroughbred horse racing....beat the field by 31 lengths and holds the track record at 2:24 which will most likely never be broken at Belmont. |

Secretariat was like Wilt Chamberlain, head and shoulders above his contemporaries.
Seattle Slew was like Michael Jordan, beat anyone who dared stride aside him, and like Jordan, an undefeated superstar. _________________ I'm On point, On task, On message, and Off drugs. off topic, i could be wrong but i remember i've heard whenever a race horse gets injured and no longer can race they had to put it down, does that mean they kill the horse? if so, why? |

They euthanize it because horses develop much worse problems and it only prolongs the suffering....look up Barbaro for an example, he won the Kentucky Derby, they tried everything in their efforts to save that horse, but to no avail. |

Often when race horse gets injured, he suffers from overstressing other parts of his body whilst the injured area recovers - and as a result is left in excruciating pain which then requires that he be "put out of his misery". So it's not quite as simple as ' he get's hurt then is taken out back and shot'. Attempts at recovery are made, but the rate of failure is high and the attendant conditions of recovery can cause more painful problems than the original injury itself. _________________ I'm On point, On task, On message, and Off drugs. There's been talk of changing the Triple Crown format. Thinking of more time between races to allow horses to rest.
I don't think it should be done. The 11 winners won under the current format, changing it would make the next winner a fallacy in a sense.
Maybe a asterisk would be apropos. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Just to be clear, not every injury requires this. We're usually talking about broken legs, as was the case with Ruffian. They don't kill horses just because they can't race any more. |

Nothing needs to be changed....you wouldn't see people this emotional that have been following the sport had they made things easier. Speaking of which, that owner who (bleep) and moaned about losing the Triple Crown last year because of fresh horses looks like a fool now because American Pharoah beat all comers today. |

Babaro broke his leg at the Preakness and they didn't put him down immediately.
Horses have very fragile legs. IIRC they put Barbaro in a sling to keep the weight off of his legs but he developed some kind of infection and they had to put him down after one or two more operations.
I've read some horror stories about what happens to horses when they can no longer race. Glue factories, sent to Europe for meat and and such.
There is more drug use in horse racing than any other sport. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

That still makes me sad. _________________ “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.”

I can't believe they allowed a goat to race against horses _________________ Lake Show |

I've seen 4 in my lifetime, so I knew it would happen again eventually.
I am glad that my kids got to see this, so now they understand the anticipation of waiting to see it happen again. |
