Posted: Tue Jun 16, 2015 7:38 am Post subject: Breaking: The FBI is investigating the Cardinals for hacking into the Astros’ computer system |
|
|
Quote: | You’ll recall that last year someone hacked into the Astros’ “Ground Control” database, which is the internal communication and evaluation system. Among the stolen data — which was subsequently posted online — were internal discussions about a possible trade for Giancarlo Stanton last year, the leadup to the Bud Norris trade and discussions between the Astros and Yankees in which the Yankees offered Ichiro Suzuki to Houston for cash. Not the sort of stuff a team wants public.
Now, according to an exclusive report in the New York Times, the FBI has a suspect. The Best Suspect in Baseball:
Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials . . . The officials did not say which employees were the focus of the investigation or whether the team’s highest-ranking officials were aware of the hacking or authorized it. The investigation is being led by the F.B.I.’s Houston field office and has progressed to the point that subpoenas have been served on the Cardinals and Major League Baseball for electronic correspondence.
The Times reports that the impetus for this was both (a) concern that former Cards executive Jeff Luhnow took proprietary information with him when he left for Houston to become the Astros’ GM; and (b) lingering resentment over Lunhow’s tenure with the Cardinals, where he was reported to have been a polarizing figure. It was not a sophisticated hack, the Times reports. Rather, Cards employees referred to a master password list Luhnow used when with St. Louis, which used a similar computer system. |

Cardinals being investigated by FBI for hacking Astros
Quote: | The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors are investigating whether front-office officials for the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades, hacked into internal networks of a rival team to steal closely guarded information about player personnel. |

Bill Belichick is laughing somewhere. If you're going to commit a federal prison-time felony, don't be so obvious about it. Even better, frame the Yankees, for crying out loud.
Seriously, though, some people in the Cardinals organization are about to get criminal records, and the organization is about to take a major hit to its prestige, I can't believe these people had the audacity not only to steal the stuff, but to leak it on the Internet. I've worked with the computer crimes people at the FBI down here (albeit indirectly), and they are tenacious.
If this is all true -- which it probably is -- and you are the Commissioner of Baseball, what do you do to the Cardinals? |

I guess part of it will be whether it was a rogue employee (though the article refers to the plural form) or if the infiltration was the result of a management directive. If it is the latter, the secondary question becomes just how high up the ladder, in terms of directive or permission granted for the infiltration. Color me skeptical, but if there's an employee dumb enough to leak, then said Cardinal employee probably boasted about it internally.
If this hits the highest levels of Cardinals management, then we're talking major sanctions, like record fines (or television revenue withholding) and multiple year suspension of early round draft picks. |

Not a big deal, either thread will do.
At least the bastards didn't deflate the baseballs. |

Wow.
I wonder how high this goes up.
In the aftermath, I also wonder if the Cards pitchers keep getting those amoeba-like strike zones. _________________ We back. |

Not sure if MLB will have the guts to do anything major against an organization like the Cardinals. They've got enough advantages as it is crying poverty and getting those competitive balance picks. I hope their hubris gets the proper comeuppance on and off the field. |

They were just getting back info that Houston stole from them, that is where the insider hacking began. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

And people thought the Pats deflating balls (which the NYTimes tried to disprove) was bad.... |

Now the Patriots are off the hook for spygate, deflategate and all the other questionable bleep they've done. Way to go Cards!

I thought this was a case of some ex-employee whose account access was still active or something. Maybe I'm confusing stories. |

There's been years of rumors and accusations surrounding that team for sign stealing. Cardinal Way indeed. |

Yeah, you're confusing stories. The Astros' GM is the ex-employee here. He used to work for the Cardinals. It is the Cardinals who apparently hacked into the Astros' database.

I've always wondered why the Cardinals have been contenders for so many years after losing a HOF coach in La Russa and a great player in Pujols. Now I know. |
