Think of this as a win win. His supporters happy he’s back, his detractors happy he’s not having a good game.

D'Angelo Russell on Caris LeVert:

I tried to be that voice for him, but he’s growing on his own. Every game he has ups and downs, but being that voice for him.. two young guys on the team trying to find their way in this league, I think we’re going to need each other to do that

Pretty much the same (bleep) since he was drafted.

Yup. Kid became the avatar of all laker angst.

Bad stats aside, the run they made when he was running the second unit was one of the main reasons they won.

Him being rusty was expected after missing 33 games. Crabbe has been shooting poorly. DLO should take his place when he's ready to start.

BK front office has been great acquiring talent with having no draft picks. Now wait till they can actually draft lottery players

And he could fetch them more pick(s) going out as a useful 2019 expiring this summer. One of Marks' best moves in his short tenure.

How was his defense? I missed the second half. But in the first half, he was killing me on the PnR. Watching Dinwiddie fight over screens so the big man could hedge and recover, versus watching Russell just immediately give up into a switch, was day-and-night.

They're smart putting him off ball and letting LeVert (and presumably Dinwiddie if they played together) guard the primary ballhandler, imo. Even though iirc last year his defensive numbers at the 1 were actually better than at the 2.

(I'm also reminded of a Cranjis stat about how Russell's PnR ballhandler defense ppp was elite before his injury. I wonder if that's because after a switch, the playtype becomes something else, like an iso? Or maybe I'm just not evaluating his defense correctly.)

Marks also got Ujiri to take on $6 m in dead salary (Justin Hamilton).

Just nice to see DLo back out there. Nets announcers said he was out there hugging everyone before the game -/ ballboys, coaches etc.

I hope he's found a permanent home.

His second stint was like a 14-0 run so Miami didn't score during it. But Levert was on Dragic like you mentioned and he was guarding off ball. I think he likes to play a step off of ball handlers and try to recover with his length, which makes it easier to catch him on screens. Regarding the Synergy stats I think they still count switches as part of PnR defense. Though it can also mean that he could benefit from having teammates who are good at handling switches.

Am I the only one that thinks he shouldn't be constantly looking to bulk up, given his chicken legs and knee issues?

I keep thinking Dinwiddie is a nickname for D'Angelo instead of the name of an actual player.

Hmm, ty for the info. I'll keep an eye out on his defense. It's funny how I was so keyed in on him playing defense as a Laker that my eye naturally track him still. I think the PnR defense stat might be the result of a small sample size. Or like you said, his teammates are good at handling switches. To be fair, he's also been pretty good at ice and soft hedge coverages too, so that's probably part of it.

+12 tonight in his minutes so far. Didn't get a chance to watch, but it appears he's rounding back into form?

I was watching the 2nd half... eh. Individual game +/- is notoriously shaky and he benefits from playing against bench scrubs, esp. since the Brooklyn bench corps is pretty good. He's been off-ball both offensively and defensively (LeVert was on ball for both) and so his impact wasn't that tangible.

At least in the 2nd half, he's been pretty passive -- aside from one bricked contested 3 (I guess he was feeling hot after making one 3 in a row lol), he's basically just been taking open shots (open 3, open fastbreak layup) or making the correct reads out of the PnR. Nothing wrong with that (Dinwiddie-esque honestly) and the team played well he was out there, but not really the Dlo of old.
