Yes and he isn't ready.

Agreed that he is not ready for this year, but by next season he could play some NBA minutes. I just don't want to have him poached by another team while we dick around with Sacre, who we know will never be good.

We traded away a lot of our picks, Ups would be like an extra first rounder to us next season.

I would stash him on the bench. I liked the multi-year vet's min. deal we had him on.

Now that the Lakers don't have to guarantee Sacre's deal, I hope they put Upshaw in Sacre's role next year.

Good idea. Ups needs a lot of work & he needs time to mature mentally also.
He is definitely not ready for NBA prime time. Patience & hard work is the key.

Hows he doing energy wise?
Is he able to play a good 30 mins without being exhausted?

He's improving, played 23 minutes last night w/o any issues, but its a work in progress. He has a way to go.

Just wait till another Miami gets hold of him when he is ready ala Whiteside. Then we will be left being too cute for our own good once again. I mean all this just because we have Sacre? Sacre Bleu!

Put him in a game for 8-10 minutes at a time. Get him some seasoning.

I mean, do we really need Huertas?

Judging by those stats, he's a worse Hibbert who has shown little improvement. 2 blocks is good but a 7 footer only grabbing 3 rebounds in 23 min in the dleague is unacceptable. If somebody else grabs him, so be it. If not keep him on the d league and reevaluate next offseason.

Ideally we sign Upshaw to the longest minimum contract that still keeps him restricted when he hits free agency, and we do that after this season is over so that we get an extra year. Then we give him the 3rd string C role and see what happens.

Whiteside / Black / Upshaw is my dream scenario at the center position.

I know Upshaw probably jumps at the first NBA contract offered to him, but he does genuinely sound like he wants to try to become a Laker. I do appreciate him working hard (lost 50 pounds since the summer) on the DLeague team and aiming to join the Lakers.

I believe 2 years is the longest deal you can give and keep him restricted. If he makes it to summer without getting picked up we will probably invite him to camp again next fall and give him a shot at making next years team. Only way I see us picking him up this year is if he starts to blow up in the next month or so. Or possibly if we trade or cut players after the all star break.

We're all with you yinomes. Dude should be the 15th man on the Lakers while still being assigned to the Dfenders so he can grow.

I hope we don't wait too long

I mean Huertas? What's he giving us? I was puzzled we didn't cut him.

I'm hoping post-trade deadline we can clear a roster spot of rim. Our games are a farce anyway. What is there to lose?

And he has quite the cult following with Lakers fans.

Like the emperors of Rome giving out food at the gladiator games.

i agree that he's not ready.. I'd love it if he were ready.. but he's got a long way to go mentally before he can be an NBA player.. i think Byron would destroy him.. confidence.. attitude.. he'd not be a good fit with Byron..

so what is there to lose? HIM.. we'll lose upshaw and his potential.

If Upshaw continues this trajectory, it's just a matter of time before some NBA team picks him up. If not, I'm sure he'll go the overseas route and make millions anyways.

His midrange game is coming along nicely. A center who can spread the floor, shoot threes and block shots is a rare commodity in today's league. The defensive instincts are there, but they need to be fostered.

I'd lol if Upshaw and Black beast on other teams the same way Davis and Bazemore did. It would just highlight the blunders of an already incompetent management.

Come on, LA. Up your game here. Develop this guy. Get him a mentor and a life coach. It's worth the investment.

We're not saying he's a franchise savior. But at 15th man, it's worth the "risk."

You'll lose that anyway letting him play in the D-league where if he plays well enough another team can just scoop him up.

This. The boy has problems and upside, we don't have anything to lose making him our 15th man.

Yeah. But I haven't heard anything negative about him getting into trouble or anything. So that's good for him.
