D’Angelo Russell drastically improves Lakers 2015-16 chances

June 26, 2015 By paulmbanks

D’Angelo Russell could really become the next Agent Zero. More than anyone else in this NBA Draft class, he has that wow factor. Like Gilbert Arenas, he wears #0 and is a true scorer. Not just a shooter, but a total package scorer. The 6-foot-5-inch Ohio State guard from Louisville, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second pick of the 2015 NBA First Round Thursday in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Thursday’s NBA draft came and went and Lakers fans now get to acclimate themselves to their three newest prospects.

RELATED: 5 Reasons Why Lakers Must Succeed in Free Agency

First, the Lakers surprised many and went with the point guard from Ohio State (D’Angelo Russell) over the center from National Champion Duke (Jahlil Okafor). With everyone we heard in recent years about the importance of a franchise big man, the Lakers front office decided that the movement toward lead guards dominating the league was no longer possible to ignore.

Stanford's Brown picked by the Lakers in the NBA Draft

Stanford grad Anthony Brown was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft on Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Brown, who was the fourth pick of the round and 34th overall, becomes the 32nd NBA Draft choice in school history.

A native of Fountain Valley, Brown is the seventh player in program history to be chosen in the second round and the first taken by the Lakers since Mark Madsen in 2000.

Thank you and hope I can keep it up this time. I'm out of school and have a nice job. I do this in memeory of my father, former owner of LG, Phil. I am his adopted daughter and used to help him do this.

GO LAKERS! I can feel they are coming back also!

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Lakers chose Larry Nance Jr. with the 27th overall pick in the NBA draft on Thursday night, only to learn the Wyoming forward sent out a critical tweet about Kobe Bryant three years ago.
Nance has since deleted the tweet, which was widely shared on social media immediately after the Lakers selected Nance with their second first-round pick.

Report Card Grades for the Los Angeles Lakers' 2015 NBA Draft

By David Murphy , Featured Columnist Jun 26, 2015

By the time the clock wound down on Thursday night, the Los Angeles Lakers had selected an interesting if perhaps unexpected nucleus of rookie talent.

There were rumors leading up to the draft about a possible trade for All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings, with Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reporting on “possible frameworks of a trade.”

But while those talks never came to fruition, L.A. still had a major surprise up its sleeve—selecting Ohio State point guard D’Angelo Russell with the No. 2 pick, when many had assumed Duke’s Jahlil Okafor would get the nod.

With Russell pick, Lakers get the point

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t here often, drafting so close to the top. Such is their success. Their last top-two pick came in 1982, when they selected James Worthy first overall. Their last top-five pick before that came in 1979, when they drafted a point guard known as Magic. That No. 1 pick happened 36 years ago Thursday.

So on the anniversary of an historic arrival that would light up the league and all of Los Angeles, the Lakers acquired their most elite point guard since Magic Johnson and a player who offers what Magic carried perhaps most of all, what has always been the most powerful currency in this city and for their marquee NBA team:

Star power.

NBA Free Agency Rumors: LaMarcus Aldridge Lakers' Top Target Over DeMarcus Cousins

Michael Briggs , Design & Trend Staff Writer
Jun, 26, 2015, 11:05 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers were universally applauded for selecting perhaps the new face of "Showtime," Ohio State point guard D'Angelo Russell, with the second pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft.

Now, with the NBA offseason switching gears to free-agency, it appears the rich will get even richer.

The NBA Draft is now officially over and the Los Angeles Lakers kept all their picks. With the second, they took D’Angelo Russell. At the end of the first round, they took Larry Nance Jr. and with the 34th, they selected Anthony Brown. All three players will have a good shot to stick with this current Lakers squad.

Factors behind Lakers’ Russell pick, and 14 other draft revelations

By Tim BontempsJune 26, 2015 | 12:41pm

Another NBA Draft has come and gone, Barclays Center playing host to yet another night full of twists and turns as 60 players saw their dreams realized by being selected.
Here’s a compilation of news, notes, thoughts and observations from inside the arena in Brooklyn:
1. If you don’t believe the NBA is a different league today than it was five or 10 years ago, look no further than what the Lakers did with the No. 2 pick.

NEW YORK (AP) — From coast to coast, the NBA draft was a big night for the biggest markets.

The Los Angeles Lakers tabbed their next potential superstar in D'Angelo Russell. The New York Knicks landed a pair of players in the first round, selecting Kristaps Porzingis and later acquiring the rights to Notre Dame guard Jerian Grant.

Both teams are coming off their worst seasons in their histories and hoping the turnarounds started Thursday.

Russell is ready to do his part.

"I'm here, and I'm ready to make an impact right away," the Ohio State point guard said.

Lakers draft Ohio State guard D'Angelo Russell with No. 2 pick in NBA draft
June 25, 2015 Updated June 26, 2015 12:40 a.m.
BY BILL ORAM / STAFF WRITER

Ohio State point guard D'Angelo Russell poses for a photo with NBA commissioner Adam Silver after the Lakers selected Russell with the second pick during Thursday's draft in New York.

“If any of those players on this wall were available,” General Manager Mitch Kupchak said, “we would have selected them.”

In the big moment, the Lakers went small.

The Lakers drafted D’Angelo Russell with the No. 2 pick, passing on skilled big man Jahlil Okafor, who was picked third by Philadelphia.

A versatile 6-foot-5 combo guard from Ohio State, Russell became the team’s highest selection since James Worthy went No. 1 in 1982.

D'Angelo Russell cheks out something on a cell phone as he speaks to the media after being selected second overall by the Lakers during the NBA Draft on Thursday night in New York. Russell wasn't the safe choice, but perhaps that's the Lakers adapting to the league around them.

Former UW center Robert Upshaw goes undrafted, will sign with Lakers

Originally published June 25, 2015 at 11:08 pm

Former Washington center Robert Upshaw (24) went undrafted in Thursday’s NBA draft. The shot-blocking phenom reportedly signed a summer contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Seattle Times staff reporter
Perhaps being booted from two teams in two years and admitting to a substance abuse problem scarred NBA teams away from Robert Upshaw, who wasn’t among the 60 players taken in Thursday’s NBA draft.

Or maybe a heart condition that was detected at last month’s NBA combine had something to do with the 7-foot shot-blocking phenom going undrafted despite many draft analysts projecting him as a second-round pick.

Whatever the reason, the former record-breaking Washington Huskies center didn’t do enough to tempt one of the 30 NBA teams to use a draft pick on him. The 21-year-old redshirt sophomore was one of two notable Pac-12 underclassmen players who was not

About that NBA draft that appeared to be a Lakers slam dunk?

They broke ankles, stepped back, and shot a trey.

All the hype over the franchise-changing big man the Lakers would be miraculously handed with their second pick?

They didn't want him.

The celebration over the acquisition of a kid who can lead the Lakers into their next championship era?

That kid might actually be a 29-year-old dude from Portland.

In their best no-look pass since Magic, the Lakers snubbed Duke center Jahlil Okafor for Ohio State point guard D'Angelo Russell on Thursday with a pick that was about far more than Okafor or Russell.

Lakers surprise many, including D'Angelo Russell, on second overall pick
BY MIKE BRESNAHAN AND ERIC PINCUS
June 25, 2015, 10:43 p.m.
Mitch Kupchak had a question for the newest member of the Lakers.

He called D'Angelo Russell shortly after the Lakers took him with the No. 2 pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

"Did we surprise you a little bit?" the Lakers' general manager asked the Ohio State point guard as a few people crowded around the phone.

Everyone knew the answer: Absolutely.

The Lakers passed up the safe selection, Duke center Jahlil Okafor, to take the flash-and-dash presented by Russell.

He wowed the team with his lights-out shooting at workouts, not to mention a matching personality, and was so excited Thursday he felt like "busting out like a baby, in tears," he said at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

Russell said all the right things Thursday, oozing confidence in his Ohio State-colored jacket, not to mention red shoes that looked more like expensive slippers.

"I'm still in shock ... but dreams come true. I'm here and I'm ready to make an impact right away," he said.

NBA teams continue to go big with draft picks

Karl-Anthony Towns holds a selfie stick as other top draft prospects gather for a photo ahead of the 2015 NBA draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Karl-Anthony Towns, D'Angelo Russell go No. 1 and No. 2 at NBA draft
BY BEN BOLCH
June 25, 2015, 10:49 p.m.
Small ball was supposed to be all the rage in the NBA after the Golden State Warriors benched center Andrew Bogut on the way to their first championship in 40 years.

A bevy of big men poked their heads back into the proceedings Thursday night, showing that size is still king in the minds of many team executives.

Seven of the first 12 players selected in the league draft at Barclays Center in New York were 6 feet 10 or taller, with five of the picks 7-footers.

The Minnesota Timberwolves took 7-foot Karl-Anthony Towns with the top pick, as expected, before the Philadelphia 76ers selected 6-11 Jahlil Okafor with the third pick even though they already had 7-foot Joel Embiid and 6-11 Nerlens Noel, prompting Embiid to tweet, "OK…….Lol."

The Lakers bucked the trend, picking point guard D'Angelo Russell second, though it came only as a prelude to their pursuit of big men Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency.

Breaking down the first round of the NBA draft

BY RYAN WOLSTAT, TORONTO SUN
FIRST POSTED: THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2015 11:59 PM EDT | UPDATED: FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2015 12:02 AM EDT

Minnesota drafted Karl-Anthony Towns first overall on Thursday night. (USA TODAY SPORTS)
Article

NEW YORK - 1. Minnesota. Karl-Anthony Towns PF/C, Kentucky — No surprise. Two-way force and best big man kicks things off and forms formidable partnership with Andrew Wiggins.

2. L.A. Lakers. D’Angelo Russell, PG, Ohio State — First shocker, Lakers go for bigger upside in elite passer and shooter.

3. Philadelphia. Jahlil Okafor, C, Duke — Have to take best player available and he’ll bring needed offence and insurance for mystery that is Joel Embiid.

4. New York. Kristaps Porzingis, PF, Latvia — Knicks fans hated it, but he has as much upside as anybody. Also has as much downside.

5. Orlando. Mario Hezonja, SG/SF, Croatia — No team needed a shooter as much as Magic and this was the obvious pick.

6. Sacramento. Willie Cauley-Stein, C, Kentucky — Kings anything but predictable and reach for dominant defender instead of trading down for him.

No blockbuster at NBA Draft, but plenty of surprises

By Gary Washburn GLOBE STAFF JUNE 26, 2015
The Los Angeles Lakers never allowed themselves to think conventionally about their highest draft pick in 33 years. They kept their opinions of Jahlil Okafor and D’Angelo Russell close, so close that the NBA world completely expected them to select the big man.

Instead, the Lakers shook up the draft by using the second overall pick on Russell, the flashy, talented, and rising Ohio State point guard, over Okafor, who was considered the consensus No. 1 overall pick just a few months ago.
