Lakers look to acquire a big man as they set the table for next year

MARK J. TERRILL / ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Lakers, though, have already turned lemons into something sweet, moving up in the draft despite the gnashing jaws of Steve Nash-shaped despair and grabbing dynamic point guard D'Angelo Russell second overall.

All their financial eggs now go into the big-man basket. They want to talk to LaMarcus Aldridge, he wants to listen, and if all goes well for both sides, the four-time All-Star signs a four-year, $80-million deal to be the Lakers' power forward.

VIDEO: Jahlil Okafor Can’t Believe He’s a 76er, Throws Jersey

by Eric Rodriguez 28 June 2015, 3:39 AM

Duke’s Jahlil Okafor probably thought he was going to be taken at No. 2 by the Los Angeles Lakers in this year’s NBA Draft.
He gushed about the opportunity of playing alongside Kobe Bryant and continuing the tradition of legendary Laker bigs.
Luckily for Okafor, leading up to the draft ESPN’s Chad Ford said that, according to his sources, there was an “80% chance” the Lakers would take the Duke center.
Instead, Okafor’s dreams were crushed. The Lakers went small, selecting D’Angelo Russell, a dazzling point guard from Ohio State. Okafor would then land with the ever-rebuilding Philadelphia 76ers.

Kobe Bryant: 'Friends come and go but banners hang forever'

By James Herbert | NBA writer

(Article & Video)

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant appeared at the BET Awards on Saturday for an interview with ESPN's Jemele Hill. During the conversation, he dropped what I would consider one of the Kobiest -- yes, that's totally a word -- quotes of all-time.

Kobe Bryant on Larry Nance Jr. tweet: 'We've all done things we regret'

Baxter Holmes, ESPN Staff Writer

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant says he has talked with first-round draft pick Larry Nance Jr. about a tweet Nance posted in 2012 that referred to a sexual-assault case involving Bryant.

Speaking at the BET Experience held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday night during a sit-down interview with ESPN's Jemele Hill, Bryant said "there's no need" for any further discussion about the matter.

Kobe discusses his mindset when it comes to friendship and basketball.
Kobe still undecided about when he'll retire
Kobe Bryant said he has yet to make a decision about his future in the NBA beyond 2015-16.
Kobe'€™s advice to Lakers rookies: €Ask why
Kobe thinks the most important thing for rookies to learn is to ask the right questions.

"The kid figured it out himself," Bryant said. "He's a kid, man. He actually sent me a great message [Friday], which is really funny. I looked at it [the message], and it was like, 'This is when you know it's about time to hang these things up, when your teammate writes you, Hi, Mr. Bryant.'

Marc Gasol Canceling Los Angeles Lakers from His List?
by Christian Dudley 22m ago

Before the free-agency period even begins, Marc Gasol has already made his disdain for the Los Angeles Lakers known–crossing them off of his short list of potential suitors.

Bits and pieces of information have been leaked about Marc Gasol impending free-agency ever since the Memphis Grizzlies were knocked out of the 2015 NBA Playoffs.

Gasol has continuously stated that his “decision will be good because I will make it good” in regards to the well-being of Grizz fans. That means that he will return, right?!

Los Angeles Lakers Prepare Contract Offer for LaMarcus Aldridge

By Dave Deckard  @DaveDeckard on Jun 27, 2015, 10:41p 172

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

L.A. plans to make Aldridge an offer that's hard to refuse.

The first concrete free agency salvo targeted at LaMarcus Aldridge this summer might be fired by the Los Angeles Lakers. Mike Bresnahan, writing for the LA Times, reports that Mitch Kupchak and company are offering a pretty pennyto the Portland Trail Blazers star.

http://www.blazersedge.com/2015/6/27/8858355/los-angeles-lakers-lamarcus-aldridge-free-agent-contract-trail-blazers
All their financial eggs now go into the big-man basket. They want to talk to LaMarcus Aldridge, he wants to listen, and if all goes well for both sides, the four-time All-Star signs a four-year, $80-million deal to be the Lakers' power forward.

Bresnahan offers ancillary reasons that Aldridge might be interested in the deal:

Aldridge already owns a home in Orange County, his initials are tailor-made for the Lakers, and it just so happens that his good plays were rewarded at Portland home games by an audio snippet of Randy Newman's "I Love L.A."

he Los Angeles Lakers are days way from taking a shot at landing an elite free agent, and LaMarcus Aldridge is emerging as their top priority. Honestly I think it's just a case of a bad camera angle and cutting the footage short...

I wonder how much of the "first option" talk is because he's simply the most likely FA to move?

Am I missing something? The LMA article says the Lakers will have $23 million in cap space if we decline Hill's option but it appears to me that we would have $32 million (assuming a $68 million cap).

Contracts (estimated):
Kobe- 25
Young - 5
Randle - 3
Kelly - 2
Sacre - 1

Total: 36 million

You would have to add money for the rookie contracts, and place holders for the remaining roster spots

Like Duncan LMA does not like playing Center.

If Lakers plan to play him at C he may not come.

He's also super-soft.

He'd be so dangerous at center though

He'd draw out the opponent's rim protector, giving Randle and Clarkson an easy path to the basket

True. But if he doesn't want to play there what are you gonna do? He'll just go somewhere else, somewhere in Texas.

And do what? No one wants to go to Dallas. Dirk or no Dirk. And San Antonio is a year away from a rebuild. Lakers are a year away from title contention for the next 7-10 years. LMA and his people know whats going on here. He is 29 years old, he has a potential hall of fame career at stake and titles. he will make money no matter what, but going to LA serves the formers in a year.

It's common sense. Lakers have cap space to sign two max players the next two years. LMA is a top 3 power forward and you have players like Durant, possibly Butler and Leonard whom I believe will play out the next year and go unrestricted for next year so they can get that extra TV money. Lakers than have 3 options at the 3 and I do not see them not getting one of those guys with the way the team is set up.
