Quote:
D’Angelo Russell?

“I think he’s terrific,” West said.

He said it without hesitation.

“He passes the ball like, oh my gosh,” West added.

Are we talking a Magic Johnson or a healthy Steve Nash here?

Jay Bilas, the former Rolling Hills High (now Peninsula High) star now a talking head breaking down the draft for ESPN, has gone so far as to say, “D’Angelo Russell is a savant passing the ball.”

Looking at Russell, Nance and Anthony Brown, the Stanford forward selected No. 34 by the Lakers, West nodded to indicate his approval.

“I think they did incredibly well in the draft,” he said.

Pretty sure West would have drafted him at 2. Not sure if he'd pick him over Towns though.

“If they could get a good free agent (note he did not say they need a great free agent), I think they’d have a chance to make the playoffs,” West said of the Lakers

Then he returned to Russell.

“He’s a heck of a player,” West said. ”People are going to enjoy him.”

as a rival consultant who just came off a title run, West sure spent a lot of time talking about Lakers, does he still want to come back or something?

Blessing in disguise. Imagined if the Bulls had the #1 pick in 1984, they would've very much drafted Olajuwon too over Jordan.

He might've. Russell is Jerry West's wet dream. Passes, Shoots, Confident, Versatile

More likely, he has a lot of media that keep asking him questions about the Lakers.

Yup. And Thunder/Sonics were doing everything they could to move up to 1 to pick Oden.

Reporters will almost always ask him questions regarding the Lakers. Doubt he called a press conference to make these comments.

Should be reassuring for those on the fence about Russell. I was sold long ago.

West is honest about this kind of stuff

The Force is strong in young Ryan West.

(Or he just asked dad to help him with the pick).

I love hearing Jerry's opinion on players. He's always straight forward and genuine with his thoughts. Looks like Ryan West may have asked his dad for advice on Russell. I'm loving this pick more and more each passing day.

I notice people want to keep saying Magic Johnson, but they are careful with their words.

I agree, but I gotta give Mitch props cause he sounded like the team made the right choice & are confident in this young man's growth & potential to run this team. I can see him as the point with Clarkson the 2 guard & us being capable of competing with the other western back courts within two years!

The same Jerry West that traded a starting center (Divac,Okafor) for what was to become a HOF'er? Bryant....and perhaps Russell will follow the same path? ...noice!!

This is still my favorite Sports quote of all time:

"Michael is a very good offensive player but not an overpowering one," Rod Thorn, then the Bulls' GM, said after drafting Jordan. "We wish Jordan were 7-feet, but he isn't. There just wasn't a center available. What can you do? Jordan isn't going to turn this franchise around. I wouldn't ask him to. He's a very good offensive player, but not an overpowering offensive player."

He was giving a speech in Los Angeles, so he naturally received questions about the Lakers draft, and he gave the "they did just super" answers you'd expect him to give in that situation.
