Blessing in disguise. Imagined if the Bulls had the #1 pick in 1984, they would've very much drafted Olajuwon too over Jordan. |
Yup. And Thunder/Sonics were doing everything they could to move up to 1 to pick Oden. |
Ironically it was Portland again that screwed up. _________________ Tacos |

This is still my favorite Sports quote of all time:
"Michael is a very good offensive player but not an overpowering one," Rod Thorn, then the Bulls' GM, said after drafting Jordan. "We wish Jordan were 7-feet, but he isn't. There just wasn't a center available. What can you do? Jordan isn't going to turn this franchise around. I wouldn't ask him to. He's a very good offensive player, but not an overpowering offensive player." |
Exactly. Chicago is lucky they didn't have the #2 pick. They probably would've picked Sam Bowie. |

So Jerry West, a GM for a rival team, has a direct insider to what the Lakers are thinking? WTF? |

Jerry is a man of integrity. He would never even consider going that route.
Plus he is a Laker for life. Any other affiliation is just strictly a job. |

Good means LMA, Love, Cousins.
There are about 3 great players that can put you over the top, LeBron, Durant and Tony Davis.
I think DeAndre is Ok, but alone he can't bring us back to playoff land |

Are we talking a Magic Johnson or a healthy Steve Nash here?
Jay Bilas, the former Rolling Hills High (now Peninsula High) star now a talking head breaking down the draft for ESPN, has gone so far as to say, “D’Angelo Russell is a savant passing the ball.”
Looking at Russell, Nance and Anthony Brown, the Stanford forward selected No. 34 by the Lakers, West nodded to indicate his approval.
“I think they did incredibly well in the draft,” he said. |

EJ won a ring his rookie season. You best tread lightly around the words...like magic...johnson.

Jerry West is a great talent evaluator.
I didn't read his entire quotes, but did he say more than the passing stuff?
We all know Russ is going to be a fantastic playmaker and has court vision. That was his #1 strength.
However I'd like to know what Jerry thinks Russ will be like in the league in terms of his play. As great as some guys are at passing the ball, court vision isn't enough in the NBA, to be a star. Even Jason Kidd these days would struggle to dominate a game the way he used to, without a good 3 point shot (That he only developed late in his career).
Been hearing loads about Russell's playmaking, his passing, I'd love to hear some about his ability to score as well. In the league - especially at the PG position you need something that puts you ahead of your opponents. An elite first step. An elite jumpshot or pull up jumper. An elite ability to drive and finish. Hoping when we see Russ play against NBA competition, he has one of those things as well because it seems all the dominant star PG's possess at least one of those skills AND the insane passing/court vision. |

I'd disagree because as I mentioned in the post above, Nash has one of the 3 abilities all star PG's seem to have these days (either elite quickness to go with handles, or elite ability to get into the basket area and finish or pull up jumpers and shoot) to shoot lights out. Absolutely Steve was one of the best shooters in the game at his position. I don't think Russell has anywhere near the same shooting ability as Nash had as a PG.
That said, he has quite a few qualities on Steve, and I don't think he needs to be a Nash clone to have a successful all-star career. I think he'll need to become elite at getting into the basket or in the paint area and be a threat from there. If he can, then I understand why LA thinks they have Harden 2.0 |

Nash was also just a run-of-the-mill rotational player until he was about 25 or 26 as well. We shouldn't be comparing guys in their prime to 19 year olds, IMO. That's what he could be, but not what he is. |

I hope they get Nash in to be a mentor so it doesn't take Russell as long to develop. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

Russell is already a good shooter. He's arguably better than nash and curry at the same age. What makes anyone think that he won't get better as a shooter. Nash had a great handle and a 3pt shot that defenses had to respect and close out on hard. That's why nash could pretty much get to the rim whenever he wants. Russell is a good shooter and has a good handle already so he projects to be able to get to the rim regularly once he improves. |
