Rumor is that Aldridge is leaning towards signing with Spurs If the Lakers really wanted to sign Aldridge, they should make a max offer to Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs will either have to match the offer within 3 days, thus leaving them without the cap space to sign Aldridge, or let Leonard sign with the Lakers.
It's a win-win for the Lakers as they get one of the best young wing players in the NBA or eliminate one of Aldridge's primary suitors. |

Didn't Jerry West successfully use this technique before? |

That only works if Leonard signs the offer sheet, which he won't. He knows the Spurs will pay him. |

And the offer sheet doesn't become official until July 9th, I think LMA will have decided well before the 12th. |

Well the Spurs can't make Aldridge an offer yet because they don't have cap room. They need to make some trades and get rid of contracts prior to being able to offer Aldridge a contract. Leonard's contract would be one of the last dominoes to fall.
Positioning the team usually takes time and maybe the players get impatient. I'm sure Leonard had contract talks with Spurs management but maybe he signs the offer sheet to press them.
Either way, this is just a thought and there is no downside in sending Leonard an offer. Who knows, maybe he listens to the Lakers and likes what he hears. |

He can't sign it yet. Was agreed upon just as quick as The Brow's extension last night. Plus they kept Danny green for 45 million over 4 years. Good signing for the Spurs. Now they can go after Aldridge or Gasol for the max and then just engage both of those extension contracts afterwards regardless of cap space. Timmy definitely coming back. Betting they intend to drop Parker or Ginobili and do some of their dirt cheap scouting magic.
EDIT - had Green's contract duration typed wrong
