Shaq actually had the mojo to make the bold move in his prime coming to LA. The city where the lights shine the brightest and expectations are championships. Shaq didn't come to play with other hall of famers... No..He came to be a leader of a young upcoming team. Before Shaq, lakers were still looking for a star to be the face of the franchise since Magic had to retire. The big fella doesn't get much love around here, but I appreciate his decision back in the 90s.

Now, besides for Shaq, has there been any other big time free agent who WALKED to us? Where is this "Free agents used to flock to us" coming from? There has been only 1 in the last 20 years!!! Even Jerry West might get his ass whooped competing in this new CBA. |

Funny how I appreciate Shaq much more after he retired. He was definitely a level above all the free agents nowadays in both talent and personality. |

Oh you mean the Shaq that saw a team that had won 50 games, with the likes of Eddie Jones, NVE, Eldon Campbell, Cedric Ceballos on the roster? Lakers drafted Kobe that summer as well. Sure he didn't know Kobe would be a superstar, but he knew he was joining a sure fire playoff team, one he could take to a contending level.
Yeah right Shaq comes to play for a 21 win team with a star who is paid MORE than him and acts as if he's still Jordan of the league, as well as 2 rookies. |

Yes and no.
Orlando didn't try hard enough to keep him and he had "failed" to bring Orlando a championship in the city's eyes. The public poll also hurt his feelings.
Different CBA as well and financially the Lakers package was more attractive.
Easy decision for Shaq. |

Shaq.
Ever since he "Got hurt on company time, healed on company time" and the screaming at Dr Buss, "Pay me the (bleep) money" I cringe when I see his jersey hang next to the real Lakers greats of Magic, Kareem, Worthy and Chick Hearn.
Shaq does not belong on that wall and will never have my respect. _________________ Don't make me give you a trout slap! |

Revisionist history.
Shaq came to a quality Laker team coming off a 53 win season with a lot of young talent. He wanted to come to LA to be in movies. On top of that, the Lakers offered him more money than Orlando.
Doubt Shaq comes in '96 if we're a 21-61 team and he has to leave money on the table.

The team has plenty of talent -- Cedric Ceballos, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel, Elden Campbell. Wasn't like he was joining a rebuilding team. He was the final piece to a great core and he knew it. And he wanted to be in the bright lights of LA |

I'd love to lure a big fish but let's get real, Lakers roster has 2 players Kobe (old and often injured) and Clarkson (did well last year), a lot of hope with Randle and Russel and maybe a few role players between those rookies and Black.
By the way, Shaq was our last true center and one of 4 all time greats with Mikan, Wilt and Kareen. |
