Wit Dean Oliver parting ways with the Kings today, should the Lakers go after him? With all the talk about the Lakers beefing up their analytics department it seems to only make sense to go after the "father of NBA analytics". I'm interested in everyone's thoughts and opinions on this. |

This team needs any edge that it can get and talent everywhere, from the FO to the court. So yes, obviously they should make him an offer. And if Byron doesn't want to listen to him, find a coach who will. No brainer. |

The Lakers need to offer Oliver a contract asap. He is one of the best analytic guru in the game. |

The following link tells the story of Oliver's separation. It makes the Kings sound really bad.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/sacramento-kings-part-ways-with-analytics-guru-dean-oliver-005317187.html
One interesting quote from the article:
Quote: | On the other hand, there's no guarantee that Divac will stay in that position long enough to see the outcome of work. The consistent theme of Ranadive's first few years as owner is that he changes direction with an inability to wait for assessable results, let alone analyze them properly. Divac may have power now, but you once could have said the same of past Kings decision-makers like Michael Malone, Pete D'Alessandro, Chris Mullin and Oliver, most of whom hold very different ideas about how the team should play and operate. The most salient connection between TIBCO and Ranadive's vision for the Kings may not have been a belief in analytics, but the idea that decisions need to be made as quickly as possible on a case-by-case basis. The result is that the franchise looks to have no real long-term plan outside of the owner's ability to rule by fiat. |
I hope that we don't have the same type of article written about the Lakers one year from now. Whatever plan the Lakers have, they should stick to it. Jumping from plan to plan is just a way to be consistently bad. _________________ “When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.”

This whole off season has made the Queens sound like a really classy organization. |

Isn't Oliver the kind of guy who can quickly upgrade a team's analytics division? If so he's a great pickup. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

I rather have him as the head of scouting than freakin Jessie Buss or even assistant GM. |

If reports about the lack of analytics in the Aldridge meet are true, then they HAVE to, even if its only to address the perception that the Lakers are behind in times.
But "old school" Scott might not be a fan.
I know virtually ZERO on game analytics, but this is where the league has gone. Im not sold every player understands them either, but like everyone else, they see the "trend" and expect it as a staple for every team. Im sure there are major benefits from the metrics, but focusing on the simplest most basic of improvements; hiring this guy just adds another positive selling point in free agency pitches |

Uh....yeah.
Coaches come and go, but getting good people to interpret data and analyze it in this day and age is valuable.

Head of scouting is Jesse Buss and Ryan West, Jerry West's son, and the reason we have Clarkson. Keep up |

Yes, please. After the bad publicity they got hammered with this summer, this would go a long way in changing perceptions (not to mention the culture). |

We need to grab him before someone else does...if he's willing to come here. He might not....with everyone knowing BS's opinion on analytics!
I'd love us to get Oliver and then Becky Hammon as our coach (unless Ollie is willing)!!

I think if Oliver is interested in joining the Lakers, it is a slam dunk to bring him in and give him real authority and resources. |

I bet if Byron were GM he'd tear down our analytics "department" too.
I say pile on as many of these assets as we can...figure out the specifics later. Maybe we can bamboozle Byron with so many numbers that he finally accepts them. |

He was just hired in September 2014. Divac is cleaning house and removing all the previous front office guys, rightly or wrongly. |
