|
|
Before they became the stars we know today, the NBA's most promising prospects took to Summer League to strut their stuff in front of the hungry eyes of media, executives and team officials. Well, most of the did, anyway.
Summer League has always been a time for rooke is to flap their wings and prove their potential as NBA players. Performances are meant to be taken with a grain of salt, but there are always nugget to take away from the week-long escapades.
From a 17-year-old Kobe Bryant lighting up the scoreboard to Lebron James flirting with a triple-double in his debut, there will forever and always be memorable moments stemming from summer ball.
With this year's festivities no in full swing, let's take a trip down memory lane.

I, too, am surprised by their poor shooting percentages, but then I need to constantly remind myself that most players aren't exactly in game shape. It's essentially a transition period to learn and adapt to NBA level rules.
I would also argue that Anthony Randolph is the summer league GOAT. Averaged 27 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks on 60% shooting and had a spectacular 42 point game.
Unfortunately, it didn't translate well to the NBA and he's no longer playing for any team. As Artest said recently, it's "dumb man basketball". Some folks will undoubtedly excel at it, but it's a poor indicator of how they'll perform in the NBA. |

Frankly, even Kobe was a bit of a project for much of the first half of his first campaign with the Lakers, alternating frequently between moments of really exciting stuff and less than exciting shot selection. I don't read much into Summer league performances either. Give the kids a chance to develop among the men. |
