We don't know about clarkson yet because his new contract will depend on how he does this year...but i'd say he gets around 10 million and durant gets about 25, so about 25 million left over? |

Depends. Assuming Durant at 25, Clarkson at 15, that's 20m in cap space left. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

15 million seems a bit over, but then again if clarkson plays like a 15 million per year player this season, I'll happily admit i was wrong |

Well, the rookie max for example, in 2016 will be around 21m. So that's under the rookie max. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Yes. He will have a sizeable cap hold, but I get the sense he would be open to re-signing with the Lakers. I don't think he's a max contract candidate either. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Clarkson needs to play an all star level for him to get 15.

Not really. If he put up 16/5/5 I think that's worth 15m. The question is whether a team will try to make an offer which would invoke the Arenas rule. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Shelf it? Why? This whole thread is speculative and the poster asked for a reasonable estimation. He is able to post 16/5/5 and with the cap going up 25%+, 15m isn't beyond the realm. I'd actually put it something like 12-15m is his range, though I secretly hope he gets an offer that we match. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Every day, I search for "Dean Oliver" to see if there is anything more recent than him leaving the Kings.
It has been quiet so far. |

Gets it.
The very fact that I'm high on this upcoming season (even if it's not a playoff squad) should be revealing.
I'm the proverbial rock bottom and we are just bouncing off of it and heading upwards! _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Surprised not to hear much talk about Kobe. What if he has a strong season and is then willing to resign for $5-10 million per year for 1-2 years? |

Will Kobe do that? I'm not sure he would reduce himself to a Manu level salary and role. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

So would we have approx 20m left over before or after his caphold? |

Whether or not we get our #1 guy, we need to start building a contender rotation which to me is at least 8 players as coaches tend to shorten their rotation in the playoffs. That means at least 3 bigs and 5 perimeter players (at least 3 capable of playing guard). My hope is that we already have 5 of those guys (Russell, Clarkson, Randle, Lou, and Brown). Hibbert could be #6.
So we need at least 1 big (2 if Hibbert leaves) and a starting SF. Potential FA #1s available the next 2 summers are Durant, Westbrook and Curry.
IMO, we only get Durant if we also get a first-rate big to come. That's Horford, maybe Whiteside if he makes another huge leap this year. We should be able to sign a decent 2nd-tier big (Nene/Jefferson/Hibbert maybe Noah/Mozgov) with the leftover cap room. Next summer, you have the option of amnestying the latter and pursuing Ibaka.
Otherwise, we strike out on Durant/Horford (likely) and can go after second-tier guys but leave enough cap room to go after Westbrook/Curry in 2017. We'll have the option of amnestying Lou as he'd become extraneous.

Agreed. That's my realistic plan B. However it would require signing hibbert or another center as horford may want to play PF. We could certainly have a horford/Randle lineup too. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |
