IMO nicknames are earned by performance. Not just given to be cool. Perhaps I am just getting too old to find the fun in silly video game or WWE nicknames. Not a big fan of the "Splash Bros" type marketing either.
Clarkson and Russell have potential to be very good. And I am excited about the prospects of watching them develop and become impact players in the League. Instead of a "cool" nickname how about they earn the reputation as the best backcourt in the League. Maybe then a nickname will be warranted.
But giving them some ridiculous manufactured name before they have accomplished anything is just not my style. And IMO just the kind of immature marketing that I would prefer the Lakers do not engage in.
Giving the duo a nickname reeks of the same lack of professionalism and foolishness that gives us the Swaggy P's of the world. It is the same mindset that has billboards begging a player to stay or social media blasts trying to recruit weak minded players.
Re-reading this, I see I am getting old and judgmental and probably out of touch with current attitudes. But creating flashy nicknames for unproven players ranks right up there with a celebrating every play like you just won a Championship. The old coaching adage of "act like you been there before" does not seem to apply anymore. |

And when everybody in the universe has a nickname, the whole concept of a nickname loses it's meaning entirely.
