So will he officially be Panda's Friend?

If so, will the name on the back of his jersey be "Friend" or "Panda's Friend"

This needs to happen.

Would be even better if the Panda Friend Jersey is retired in Staples Center...

the slowest starting lineup in the history of the world!

Clarkson (a likely starter) is fast. Randle is fast for a PF.

I'd rather he be a training camp body, and then a player development coach. I'd still like to use that last roster spot on Upshaw

He couldn't jump before - He probably still can't jump now. Only difference is now he may know it himself.

Solid SF if he can defend.

Shooting spot up 3's was sort of his MO anyway.

I think it would be a good 1 yr pickup.

Biggest question for me is can MWP still play.

He has been around the facility working with the young guys so they have a decent idea of what he can do on the court.

Would he be the starting SF? Would this minimize Kobe's SF mpg? Can he play 10-15mpg on a consistent basis? Or more?

It would be interesting to see how much playing time MWP can earn and maintain. Also curious to see which young guy gets cut. IMO Kelly is already gone. But if MWP earns a spot who else is gone? One of Nance, Holmes, Brown? Maybe Young? Training camp may have just got a little bit more interesting.

As others stated it's more about mentoring than actual production. He isn't the missing piece by any means. But he is a good guy to have as the team transitions away from Kobe to the youngsters.

If he can teach Randle how to defend by using his strength I'm all for it. Similar body types those two.

Exactly. Push him in practice. Think of him as a sparring partner.

Metta was a step slow a couple of years ago...

That being said, if Randle learns even 20% of what Metta knows about defense, it's a "Worthy" investment. Metta might end up playing more PF in our small ball lineups anyway, he was already slow, is he bigger now? I haven't seen him in ages.

What could it hurt? I'm all for veteran leadership in the locker room, and with all these kids we have on the team it's needed. We're not going to be that good anyway, so why not?!?!

Sign him as a coach, thats all.. He needs to toughen up Randle. Beyond that, just NO. We already have 37 year old Kobe, we do not need to get OLDER

how is going to practice when he is a coach? i mean the guys on the roster need repetition and not the coach.

MWP is beyond his playing years.

But as a defensive coach he may be worth it.

Might as well let the young players develop and learn.
MWP as a player will not make a difference and hinder
the development of younger player.

It's important to have older players in the roster. We always had veteran players during our championsip years.

John Salley played 7 mpg for us during 1999-2000. AC Green played 23 mpg.

I think MWP still has a little Artest in him. It doesn't take much for him to get motivated, and he's a beast in the gym. I can see him playing into shape and getting back to his old form. It's worth giving him a year to help develop the rookies. And he can't take us out of contention because we were never in contention anyways.

Do it Mitch: also sign LO, take fisher out of retirement and bring back Andrew Bynum and trade Randle for Pau gasol and Russel for Trevor Ariza...

Having him back may be worth it simply for the entertainment value.
