Jordan Clarkson shows desire to join Gilas

Quote:
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced Sunday (August 23) that Fil-Am and Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson has stated his desire to be part of the Philippine national team.

Clarkson is set to arrive in Manila Monday (August 24) to observe Gilas practices and accompany the team to the William Jones Cup in Taipei later in the month.

The Lakers guard will also spearhead basketball clinics in the country.

“Jordan has expressed a strong desire to play for Gilas,” said Barrios. “Of course, we’ll welcome him with open arms. He’s extremely popular with the Fil-Am community in the US and he has a genuine love for our country which is where his Filipina mother Annette was born. Jordan is proud of his Filipino heritage and every Filipino all over the world is excited about the possibility of him playing for Gilas.”

National Basketball Association (NBA) star Jordan Clarkson is considered as a natural-born Filipino. So will not have to go under the naturalization process, according to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

Following reports that the Lakers guard has signaled his desire to represent the Philippines, CNN Philippines asked SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios if Clarkson had a Filipino passport and if he had acquired it before the age of 16.

“Yes to both questions,” Barrios said in a text message.

Media: You dropped 30 on Team USA. A team with players like Lebron, Blake Griffon, CP3, the Beard, and DJ. How difficult was that?

Clarkson: It's just kind of weird. I've never been able to do that in practice against Kobe. *gives sly smirk and wink to camera*

Good for him. Especially if Jimmy Alapag is still involved in the Gilas picture. Mighty Mouse is a natural leader and one of the most respected players in PBA and Team Philippines history.

Being someone who has grown up on Philippine basketball as well, I just realized he'll be the size of some of the small and power forwards on the team, but playing a combo guard.

Part of me wonders if he isn't doing too much this off-season and gonna exhaust himself by the middle of next season and hit a wall.

It's not that serious. Clarkson will probably never get the love required to make the US national team. Guys like Lillard don't even make it. He's part filipino and is getting love from that nation. He should be allowed to spread his wings.

The only thing is that Philippine team is so weak I'm scared of JC actually degrading while playing with them.

he can kiss Chinese endorsement good bye then. Phillipines and China are currently in a very tense period over sovereignty of some island in south china sea. Philipines and Japan are the only two countries turned down chinese government's invitation to attend the big military march to celebrate 70th anniversary of ending of WW2

I don't want him to play for them. I worry he could get hurt.
But if he does play, I hope he impresses some of the future all star free agents he plays against.

That team has a 5'7 guard a 6'3 forward and a 6'2 center/forward. Clarkson is listed at 6'5, I wonder if he will play forward for the Philippinos.
