FWIW
In an effort to help preserve Kobe Bryant in what could his final NBA campaign, Los Angeles Lakers coach Byron Scott said the 37-year-old Bryant will have a hard minutes cap this season, a move that both parties hope will help Bryant avoid injury after having his past three seasons cut short by it.
"We've got to stick to the guns," Scott told the Orange County Register of the cap. "If we agree on a certain amount of time we're going to stick to it."
....
While it's unclear what Bryant's minutes limit might be this season, it's expected that it will be less than the 34.5 minutes he averaged last season, including playing more than 40 minutes on four occasions. It's also unclear whether Bryant will sit out certain games of back-to-back sets.
"I know Kobe's a competitor and he's going to play as many minutes as you want him to play," Scott told the Register. "I'm also a competitor, so I want to win and I know having him on the court gives me the best opportunity to win."

Scott has repeatedly taken the blame for Kobe's injury last year.
And it's a favorite point to bring up amongst his detractors.
What is rarely brought up.
Kobe initially hurt his shoulder in training camp (before the season even started).
The month leading up to Kobe's dunk injury, Scott benched Kobe half of the team's games.
From December 23 - January 21 (Night of dunk injury), Scott sat Kobe 8 out of 16 games and his maximum minutes in that time period was 33.
Managing Kobe's minutes started last year, before the in-game injury occurred.
But it was too late. And that's why Scott happily takes the blame _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”

Hope its better than MDA's, which was watching Kobe limp off twice.....
you said it, there was no excuse for that. MDA should be remembered as failing on that one. He should've pulled Kobe out. Not saying it would've prevented the Achilles (maybe it would've happened later) but he should've been pulled. Vitti's face of disbelief staring at MDA is forever etched in memory.
getting back to Scott, do whatever it takes to keep Kobe fresh for the nail biting 4th quarters

At least that one was a must win game. Byron had Kobe playing left handed with a torn rotator cuff in a meaningless blowout.
No game is a must win unless you are in the playoffs with a championship contending team. That was D'Antoni being a dummy and a coward.
With how the team was playing to end the season, it would have been a Championship contender if it wasn't for the injuries. _________________

No, it would have lost in the first round anyway, just in six games instead of four.
That team had Nash, Kobe, and Pau in the starting lineup-- three of the worst defenders in the entire league. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
I hope that Kobe's minutes can be distributed like this:
Playing the first 6 minutes of the first quarter.
Playing for 6 minutes of the second quarter then going to the bench at the 2:00 mark.
Playing the first 8 minutes of the third quarter.
Finally, playing the last 6 minutes at the final quarter.
That would be 26 minutes.
I think the cap for Bryant is going to be 28 max so maybe he can play at the final 2 minutes of overtime if the game goes overtime.
I imagine that cap will probably be higher then it should be. Hopefully Kobe does not go over 28.7 minutes per game. A little high, but knowing him and Scott I think you could not be mad at that?
Only one person controls his minutes and his name isn't Byron Scott.
A coach should always have the last word not the player (no matter what your name is), it's unfortunate BS doesn't. _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team !

Kobe was going to be sitting out for 6 months regardless if they don't win that game. That late in his career and with how old that core was, I don't think you could just say, ehh let's lose this one, we will go to the playoffs next year with an even older Nash, an even older Pau, and an even older Kobe...oh yeah and Dwight will re-sign here too even though we have (bleep) about him all year and called him a baby and a loser. According to the officiating crew, Kobe's Achilles only tore because Harrison Barnes fouled him.
Hindsight being 20/20, Kobe shouldn't have been playing, but I still think that playing him there was a risk that at least had potential of reward. I can't say the same about Byron reinserting Kobe with a torn rotator cuff late in a blowout loss in JANUARY when they were already essentially eliminated from the playoffs.

Doesn't mean anything unless the cap is less than 29 minutes. _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up."-The Greatest
