Quote: | 2016 NBA Finals could last as long as ever
In 1978, the Washington Bullets beat the Seattle SuperSonics in the longest NBA Finals of all-time – seven games over 18 days.
Next year’s Finals will have a chance to match that record 18-day length.
The NBA announced the schedule for the 2016 NBA Finals:
Thursday, June 2, 2016
Sunday, June 5, 2016
Wednesday, June 8, 2016
Friday, June 10, 2016
Monday, June 13, 2016
Thursday, June 16, 2016
Sunday, June 19, 2016
These Finals will feature the first Friday and Wednesday games since 2003. Every other Finals game since has been played on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday. Additionally, 2016 could have the first Monday Finals game since 2000.
Why all the changes?
NBA PR:
2016 NBA Finals to feature more days between games. Schedule includes 2 days between all games in which travel is necessary
This should mean higher-quality games, especially when both teams will be tired at the end of a long season. The travel is exhausting.
But it could also mean oversaturation to a base of fans that has been watching all season. Many times in June, I’ve heard, “Is basketball still going?” with a groan.
Ultimately, I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, but this isn’t a no-brainer change. |

We can't have Lebron getting tired in a playoff series, can we
All jokes aside, it's probably a good thing for the quality of the games. _________________ I believe everything the media tells me except for anything for which I have direct personal knowledge, which they always get wrong |

The games spread out last playoffs made me lose interest, unless the Lakers are in it looks like a repeat. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Same here. I hate that they feel the need to spread everything out. The more playoff basketball is on my tv, the better.
I also hate that they need to wait until all series are finished before starting the next round, even though certain brackets matchup are set.
I thought it was great that you could watch a decisive game 5 of round 1 (back in the 90s) and the next game was game 1 of round 2. |

Trying to give Lebron enough rest so he doesn't keep losing in the finals I suppose. If it was any other player the rule would not be changed. And thats how it goes in the NBA _________________ My Dream Starting 5 next Season

So Lebron was playing in 1978 when they last took this long for the playoffs? And what rule did they change to help Lebron? Unless you think he is the only player affected by travel days. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

This is being done to change the Finals into a 2-2-1-1-1 format, right? Like the conference playoffs. At least that's what I thought. |

I don't like the two day gap between game one and game two, but otherwise I have no problem with this. I suspect that the unspoken motivation is to allow time for maximum media hype. |

Those days in between are brutal. But the ratings were great and the spacing didn't effect 2015 NBA finals. |
