PostPosted: Sun Oct 04, 2015 7:28 pm    Post subject: Offensive philosophy?

Can someone seriously tell me what BS's offensive philosophy is for this team? I understand that it's only the preseason, but it seems to me that, even dating back to last season, most possessions typically result in a lot of picks/handoffs for the first 10-15 seconds in the half court, then an eventual ISO on the perimeter or post with about 6 seconds to go on the shot clock.

There's been no clear identity as to whether this is a pick n' roll team, a post up team or an inside out team to name some examples... so what is his plan? Honestly it's been pretty frustrating to watch most of the time.

The elbow pin downs seem to be a staple, but if that doesn't free up a shooter, then they move to the p-n-r.

To say that our offense lacks imagination is an understatement. And for those saying it's only preseason, the last preseason and regular season looked awfully similar.

If you're looking for an offense with a spread floor and constant ball movement, you won't find it here....see Spurs, Warriors, etc.,

Never thought I would miss the Triangle so much in my life! I thought it was just me who was stunned by this standing around, watch the guy with the ball, and if/when he gets in trouble, make a half ass effort to bail him out.

And we aren't very good at that either. Sigh.

If this keeps up I may have to adjust my over/under for wins this season.

I would just like to see movement on the offensive end. If we lose, fine, but I sure would like to at least see some sort of an offense run. Players without the ball...MOVE.

If one can actually accurately decipher it after one pre-season game where the two units we'll use only played 2 quarters then they should work in the NBA.

BS blames it on our guys not getting to their spots quickly enough. Does that mean we need more sprints now to get ready for next game?

The opening play of the game was actually great. Horns, I believe, which led to a missed corner 3. Never did it again.

Seriously though, to answer the question, his philosophy is to run a set and then let the players 'play basketball'. Which often means means to figure it out on their own. Here's what he said when asked about post play:

Byron Scott wrote:
“In the offense that I run, post players are important. They’re very important because I think a lot of our guys are probably going to play one-on-one. If they get played one-on-one, they’ve got to be able to make a move down there, so it’s something that we emphasize, but they’ve also got to be a hub. They also have to be able to pass the ball, set screens. They have to know how to play the game of basketball. If we got a guy down there that can score, we’re going to throw him the ball.”

i didn't see any real schemes on offense. just a bunch of over-eager, hyperactive basketball players. reminded me of a intramural league team where nobody ever practices together and just come to play once in a while.

i still insist the roster is good. give it time i suppose.

The spacing is horrible. In order to fix the spacing Kobe, clarkson, and Russell need to be at the 3 pt line with randle setting picks.

The off ball movement is nonexistent

imo these are the two biggest issues with our offense.

Russell is a great passer but without adequate spacing he's going to commit a lot of turnovers.

From what I can see it's pick and roll, if that fails then isolation.

I find it hard to say your roster is good when your second best defensive player is... well, you can't even say who your second best defensive player is. Hibbert looked pretty pissed already that he's the only one trying in that regard.

Waiting for that moment when the new and improved analytics team plops their data in front of Byron and says "THIS IS WHAT YOUR OLD SCHOOL BASKETBALL IS"
