Byron Scott shows faith in D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The issue could become as difficult as holding steady on a balance beam.

How do the Lakers weigh maximizing wins and developing young players? Yet, Lakers coach Byron Scott wasted no time casting his stone on one of his season-long priorities. The Lakers’ young core of players in point guard D’Angelo Russell, shooting guard Jordan Clarkson and power forward Julius Randle started in the team’s preseason opener against the Utah Jazz at Stan Sheriff Center.

“When they make mistakes, we’ll point them out to them,” Scott said. “But I want to give these guys freedom to do what they do best. But I want structure in the offense as well. It’s a fine line.”

To no surprise, Kobe Bryant started at small forward in his first game since nursing a season-ending right shoulder injury nine months ago. Roy Hibbert, the Lakers’ main offseason acquisition in a trade from Indiana, started at center.

After the Lakers selected Russell with the No. 2 pick, Scott has become impressed with his poise and decision-making. Clarkson has also impressed the Lakers with his work ethic and willingness to adjust his role to accommodate Russell after the former 46th pick made the NBA’s All-Rookie first team last season.

“Both of those guys have come a long way in a short period of time,” Scott said of Russell and Clarkson. “I’m sure they’ll make mistakes as well. But their upside is so much higher than their downside.”

The same goes for Randle, who played 14 minutes his rookie season before fracturing his right leg. Scott trumpeted Randle’s playmaking over Brandon Bass’ experience.

“He can push it just as well as guards,” Scott said. “I told him, ‘Along with that responsibility, there’s some things you have to understand. You have to take care of the ball too. You can’t be real flimsy with it.’ If he can get seven or eight boards a game, then has the opportunity to run.”

Kobe plays entire first quarter in Lakers' exhibition opener
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Fans chanted his name, they wore his jersey. They clogged the aisles while he warmed up, angling smart phones and cameras.

The day was all about Kobe Bryant, despite his best efforts to pass on the attention.

Bryant played 12 minutes in his first game since undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. And while the Lakers lost, 90-71, to the Utah Jazz and Bryant scored just five points on 1-of-6 shooting, Coach Byron Scott deemed his star’s debut a success.

“Today was the first game he’s played in a long time,” Scott said. “(It was good) just to get his feet wet and get him back out there and get some of the rust off.”

Bryant, however, had little interest in assessing his own game, repeating softly that it “felt good.”

But asked about the play of the young teammates he has been asked to mentor, Bryant’s entire demeanor changed.

Of D’Angelo Russell, the point guard selected No. 2 overall in the draft, Bryant said, “His vision is astronomical, man.”

Lakers, Kobe offer little in 90-71 preseason loss to Utah
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The past nine months left Kobe Bryant frustrated over his latest season-ending injury. It left him determined to heal it. And it made the Lakers’ star resolved he can write his comeback story to his liking.

But the Lakers’ opening act – a 90-71 preseason loss to the Utah Jazz on Sunday at Stan Sheriff Center – featured little compelling drama surrounding Bryant’s return.

He scored five points on 1-of-5 shooting and zero assists in 12 minutes, all played in the first quarter. Bryant missed badly on his first field-goal attempt, a contested 3-point jumper over Utah guard Gordon Hayward hitting the right side of the basket. Yet, Lakers coach Byron Scott maintained Bryant “moved well and felt well” before saying he would play more against Utah here on Tuesday.

That could provide some solace to the sell-out crowd here that constantly chanted Bryant’s name late in the fourth quarter in hopes he would return.

“I thought they were crazy,” Scott said, laughing. “He hadn’t played in 2½ quarters. They didn’t really like I would put him back in , did they?”

Bryant sounded more complimentary about the fan reception, calling it “cool” and “great.” Bryant saved his sarcasm on how he thinks he can play in his 20th and perhaps final NBA season.

“Nothing,” Bryant said. “Be average.”

Lakers 'nowhere close' in preseason opener
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Before anyone gets too worked up over the Lakers blowing a 13-point third quarter lead and losing by 19 points in their exhibition opener, a reminder: It was the exhibition opener.

That doesn't mean that the sloppy performance be completely thrown out, however.

"As I just told our guys, we got a lot of work to do," coach Byron Scott said. "There’s no way in the world we’re even close to where we want to be when the season starts. A lot of good things that I saw out there, but a lot of things that we’ve got to continue to work on."

Scott started Kobe Bryant along with rookie D'Angelo Russell, second-year guys Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle, as well as Roy Hibbert. It's a lineup that inspires a lot of enthusiasm among Lakers faithful. But it will take some time to find rhythm. Collectively, that unit shot 24 percent from the field (10-of-41 shots).

The Lakers are expected to stick with that unit on Tuesday, when the Lakers and Jazz meet a second time. After that, Scott said, he will probably start tinkering with combinations.

A few notes from a night at the Stan Sheriff Center:

Game Recap: Lakers Fall To Jazz In Preseason Opener
by Alan Huerta - lakersnation.com

After finishing last season with a franchise worst 21-61 record, the Los Angeles Lakers are back to begin the 2015-16 NBA preseason in hopes of turning franchise around.

The Lakers made a lot of moves in the off-season, beginning with drafting D’Angelo Russell with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. They also drafted Larry Nance Jr. and Anthony Brown with the 27th and 34th picks overall. In free agency, the team signed multiple players such as 10-year veteran Brandon Bass, reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams and veteran Metta World Peace, who last played for the Lakers in 2013. They also made a trade with the Indiana Pacers to bring two-time All-Star Roy Hibbert to Los Angeles to protect the paint, something the team struggled with mightily last season.

Lastly, the Lakers are finally healthy once again. That means Nick Young, Julius Randle, and of course, Kobe Bryant, now in his 20th season in the NBA, are all back and are looking to help this young Laker team contend in the Western Conference.

Kobe Embraces Off-Ball, Small Forward Roles
by Joey Ramirez - nba.com

Twenty years into his Hall of Fame career, one of the top priorities for Kobe Bryant — and the Lakers as a whole — is to make the most of every minute the 37-year-old spends on the floor.

Head coach Byron Scott and Bryant himself have already alluded to him playing fewer minutes and having more days off during the 2015-16 season, but there are other ways to stretch Bryant’s value, while simultaneously furthering the development of L.A.’s young core.

One of these changes, which Bryant has embraced, is to allow the backcourt of First Team All-Rookie selection Jordan Clarkson and second-overall pick D’Angelo Russell to assume the majority of the ballhandling responsibilities.

“All minutes aren’t created equal,” Bryant said. “I think we’ve got some guys here this year that can really take a lot off me; D’Angelo and Clarkson and their ability to handle and create and make plays, and Julius (Randle) making plays. I think the minutes that I do play won’t be as heavy of minutes as they have been.”

In addition to lowering his workload, playing off the ball — which Bryant says “won’t beat your joints up as much” — is simply preferable to him. Though he has been a ball-dominant shooting guard for the majority of his career, he says that it was at former coach Phil Jackson’s insistence that he became L.A.’s primary ballhandler in the first place.

Kobe rehabbed but rusty in return to Lakers
by Sam Amick - usatoday.com

As the Utah Jazz prepared to face the Los Angeles Lakers at the University of Hawaii on Sunday, the running joke among some of those from the Beehive State is that the Lakers were apparently playing against themselves.

Having decided to hold training camp here for the first time since 2007, the Lakers captured all the local headlines with their return. Most fans who showed up to see Kobe Bryant’s official return, in truth, probably didn’t know who the Lakers were playing until they walked through the turnstiles at the Stan Sherriff Center.

But in addition to the Kobe Bryant return that made this such a highly-anticipated affair — and he showed in just 12 minutes of action during Utah's 90-71 win that he’s both rehabilitated and rusty after having season-ending shoulder surgery in January — this was a fitting opponent for the Lakers because of those lofty goals they keep talking about.

If any team can talk about pushing for the playoffs without inspiring laughter in NBA circles, it’s this Jazz team that is my frontrunner to be the surprise squad of the 2015-16 campaign. And if the Lakers are going to put all these mismatched puzzle pieces together and pull off the seemingly impossible, they’ll have to go through teams like Utah and Dallas and Phoenix and perhaps even Sacramento along the way.

For this night, though, it was all about Bryant and the start of what could be his final campaign. Twenty years in, he’s healthy again, and happy too. For now, anyways. These next six months will determine whether that remains the case.

Lakers Face Tricky Balancing Act This Season If They Want Kobe to Be Kobe
by Kevin Ding - bleacherreport.com

The Society for the Preservation of Kobe Bryant held its first meeting Sunday.

The unofficial declaration of the SPKB was as follows:

Regarding the critically endangered species known by the common name of No. 24 Black Mamba, we shall not allow for premature extinction under any circumstances. And to have this end badly in the friggin' exhibition opener? Heck, no!

Coming off of three consecutive season-ending injuries, Bryant played only the first quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' exhibition opener in Hawaii. He then unlaced those high-tops early and was saved for another day.

He was a little slow and not very sharp—shooting 1-of-5 from the field, hitting the side of the backboard on his first attempt and looking particularly at risk pump-faking into oblivion on his last one. But Bryant's energy and endurance were fine for 12 continuous minutes.

Not that there's anything wrong with the whole overprotective philosophy with Bryant right now, but this, at heart, is the problem for the rebuilding yet conservationist Lakers.

Roy Hibbert: The Los Angeles Lakers' Big Question Mark
by Adam Bronfin - numberfire.com

The biggest obstacle standing in the way of the greatest basketball player in the world was Roy Hibbert.

For three years, the Pacers-Heat playoff series was billed as the matchup of the playoffs, and with good reason. Always lacking an effective big man to limit Hibbert, the Heat watched as Hibbert bruised and bullied his way through Miami’s defense. The two-time All-Star was considered to be one of the most dominant centers in the game.

But Hibbert slowly faded out of the national spotlight. No longer did he strike fear in the hearts of opponents. After a lackluster year in Indianapolis in 2014-15, Hibbert was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

So what happened to the 7'2" center, and what does his future look like in Tinseltown? Let’s break it down.

Byron Scott Addresses ‘Tired Legs’ During Preseason
by Dan Duangdao - lakersnation.com

After numerous years, the 2015-16 Los Angeles Lakers made their return to Hawaii for training camp. In the past week, numerous players have talked about how challenging head coach Byron Scott’s training camps are. Following the loss to the Utah Jazz in their first preseason game, it was evident the Lakers had tired legs after a week two-a-day practices.

With the Lakers playing one more game in Hawaii before returning to Los Angeles, Scott was asked about tired legs during preseason. According to Lakers.com reporter Mike Trudell, Scott believes his training camp will pay off during the regular season:

Scott: "I don't necessarily care about tired legs in preseason."

Injury Update: Jabari and Anthony Brown to be Tested
by Joey Ramirez - nba.com

Monday’s practice was a black and blue one for two guys named Brown.

Jabari Brown will get X-rays on his right hand, while Anthony Brown will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder after both were hurt during training camp.

“Anthony came and ran into a pick on his shoulder, so he’s gonna go get some X-rays on his (shoulder),” head coach Byron Scott said. “Jabari, I didn’t see what happened to his right hand.”

Though the events leading to Jabari Brown’s injury were unclear, Anthony Brown’s came when he ran into a screen set by Robert Sacre.

“It was a great pick,” Scott said. “He just happened to turn and ran right into it. Robert wasn’t moving. You run into brick walls some times, you’re gonna get hurt.”

The Lakers did, however, receive some good injury news, as Larry Nance, Jr. practiced fully after missing Sunday’s game due to back spasms. He is available for L.A.’s second and final game in Hawaii on Tuesday.

Lakers aren't enthused by all the running at training camp
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

Are the Lakers that bad at shooting? Or were they cursed by tired legs?

It was open for debate after a 90-71 loss to the Utah Jazz on Sunday in an exhibition opener.

The Lakers shot 28.9% and faded badly as the game unfolded. It came after three days of two-a-day practices in another traditionally tough Byron Scott training camp.

The Lakers coach has a reputation for demanding a lot of running in the preseason. It's important in his mind because the Lakers will be better conditioned than other teams down the road.

Players, predictably, aren't as enthused about it. They're trying to fetch a positive angle, though.

2015-16 Lakers Training Camp Recap: Day 6
by Serena Winters - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers piled up a couple more injuries on their sixth day of practice during training camp. Guard Anthony Brown injured his shoulder during practice after being hit with a screen by one of the Laker bigs, and after a negative MRI is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game. Jabari Brown also injured his right hand during practice, but the X-Ray came back negative and he is also listed as questionable.

Larry Nance, Jr. (back spasms) participated in all of practice on Monday and is expected to be available for Tuesday’s game. Marcelo Huertas who is nursing a hamstring injury will actually be flying to Vancouver to complete his immigration documents and will not be available for Tuesday’s game.

Lakers head coach Byron Scott expects both Metta World Peace and Michael Frazier II, who did not play in Sunday night’s matchup, to play Tuesday.

Nick Young is motivated to prove Byron Scott wrong
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Nick Young was being serious.

That was the first sign that something had changed.

He spoke softly, almost in a whisper after the Lakers practiced Monday in Hawaii, as he reflected on last season, one of the toughest years of his NBA career.

Off the court, Young was exploding. He had signed a four-year, $21.5 million contract to stay with the Lakers, moved in with his hip-hop star girlfriend, Iggy Azalea, and was featured in a Sports Illustrated article that chronicled his self-given persona, Swaggy P.

On it, he was awful. Shots were not falling – he shot a career-worst 36.6 percent from the field – and for Young, that meant the rest of his game suffered.

Byron Scott publicly challenged him to either play defense or get comfortable watching from the bench.

“It was the first time a coach has called me out in the media or, in a larger scale in the media,” Young said. “Because everybody pays attention to the Lakers and L.A. is L.A.”

So strained became Young’s relationship with Scott, that the Lakers explored trading him in the offseason. They signed Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams to provide the kind of bench role for which they once counted on Young.

A week into a new season, however, something seems to be turning for Young and Scott. The coach has praised Young for making a better effort on both ends of the court, as well as with his attitude.

Byron Scott to field same starting lineup in second preseason game vs. Utah
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The lineup combinations remain fluid. It likely will stay that way until the training camp concludes at the end of October.

Yet, Lakers coach Byron Scott said he “wouldn’t mind” if his starting lineup featured D’Angelo Russell (point guard), Jordan Clarkson (shooting guard), Kobe Bryant (small forward), Julius Randle (power forward) and Roy Hibbert (center). Scott plans to feature that lineup for the second consecutive game when the Lakers play the Utah Jazz on Tuesday at Stan Sheriff Center.

“That group is a very good group,” Scott said following practice on Monday. “It’s very young. You have two veterans out there in Kobe and Roy. But I would love for this group to take it to the next level. The only way they can do that is by playing together a little bit more in game situations and in practice.”

Bryant sounded intrigued about the lineup’s potential, too. After the Lakers’ 90-71 preseason loss to Utah on Sunday, Bryant argued “the pieces complement each other extremely well.”

Film and thoughts on the Lakers' new starting lineup
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

The Los Angeles Lakers' projected starting lineup of D'Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Kobe Bryant, Julius Randle and Roy Hibbert played just under 10 minutes together in their first preseason game. What we saw was a breath of fresh air, looking completely unlike the team that's dragged on over the last two seasons.

This Lakers season is ultimately more about that development than the result at the end of the day -- even moreso in preseason -- and their first test as a group came in the shape of the Utah Jazz. It was a competitive game until the fourth quarter once things got out of hand while Byron Scott evaluated the deeper bench players.

How the new starting lineup plays together, though, is far and away the most interesting aspect of this Lakers season. Those 10 minutes were our first window into what may be in store for this group, and here are just a few observations on what played out in preseason Game 1.

I like the final clip. Unfortunately it displays how Randle needs to learn to pass the ball inside to Hibbert. He inexcusably ignored good position of Roy down low.

Lakers vs. Jazz Preview: Taking another shot in preseason
by Sabreena Merchant - silverscreenandroll.com

The Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz meet again for round two of their preseason set tonight in Hawaii. The first matchup was everything you'd expect of a preseason game -- a few highlights to tease the upcoming NBA season, but just enough miscues to make the real games seem oh so far away.

The big story heading into tonight's contest is if the Lakers will have their legs. Head coach Byron Scott's infamously strenuous training camp, where he claims to push to his players to their breaking points, has been unsurprisingly heavy on running. Despite the league-wide shift toward less demanding practices, the Lakers have slugged through two-a-days since they arrived in Hawaii. They shot just 28.9 percent from the field in the first game, including just three makes in the fourth quarter. D'Angelo Russell, who mentioned the need for rest, had several short jumpers in his preseason debut.

Los Angeles also won't have its full roster available for tonight's game due to some practice casualties. Anthony Brown and Jabari Brown suffered shoulder and hand injuries, respectively, during camp, and may be unable to play. On the bright side, Larry Nance, Jr. and Metta World Peace could make their debuts tonight after the pair sat out Sunday's opener.
