Probably has to do with a combination of taxes, the influence of major casinos from Vegas and also Indian gaming. Online gambling, which are usually offshore outfits don't pay taxes to the US government. Vegas and Indian casinos don't want you gambling online either since it takes away their customer base. As far as fantasy sports goes, that isn't an established industry just yet, so there is little to no regulations. |

Because the statute passed to ban online gambling contains a specific exemption for online fantasy sports. The sports leagues are on board with it. MLB has an interest in one of the companies.
It will get regulated now. It was inevitable that someone would find a way to game the system. |

Nothing? What about a nice & toasty snuggled up homeless chap sleeping soundly on a pile of old blankets on the sidewalk on a cold and clear dark night just prime for your warm white noised drip as if you were pouring a fresh cup of joe in the morning.

Well, I don't know the answer to your question. That's why I asked mine. Which is -- what exactly shall be considered gambling?
As an aside, online poker isn't illegal in all of US. It's illegal in most states though. I want to say it is legal in Nevada and New Jersey and I'm not sure if it is in others.
Not that that makes it any easier to resolve the question =)
IMO, all gambling should be legal anyway -- but how they draw the lines isn't clear to me. |

Intrastate online poker is legal in Nevada, Delaware, and New Jersey. The key point is that it is regulated. As some of you may recall, there have been scandals involving the unregulated sites. It is way too easy for the unregulated sites to commit fraud.
There have been various proposals in Congress to legalize online poker subject to federal regulation. Eventually, it is going to happen. |

Yep. Not only were they on board with the exemption, but they, at least the NFL, actively sought and lobbied to get it. I'm more than fine with regulation if only for the reason I'm tired of them inundating every sports show, broadcast, blog, podcast, sports site, etc. with their lousy commercials.
I'm sure there are better articles out there explaining the carve-out and how the exemption came to be, but this one isn't too bad.

Yeah, the commercials are really annoying. Weirdly enough, we're getting to the same place that European sports reached a few years back. They have teams with gambling site logos on their jerseys. Just wait for the Los Angeles Rams/Raiders/Whoever to move into Draft Kings Stadium. |

Also horse racing is regulated by the state. So they get their cut. Cut out the government out of your revenue stream and you will find it pretty hard to do business. |

I haven't used either site, but isn't the information these guys used to win the tournaments readily available to all the gamblers or can you not see the % of people picking individual players, when you make your team? |

You can't see the other players' rosters until rosters are locked. |

I would be worried about employees of DraftKings or Fanduel seeing the % certain guys are used in games and then going to the other site and setting a lineup. |

I heard if you make an entry on Thursday, after you set your line up, you can see how many people are holding each player, and then use that information for other entries. |
