I think Mitch did a good job this off-season (for the very first time). But this is something rather haunting:
Why is it that the dregs of other teams (Jumaine Jones and Laron Profit) become important role-players on our squad, frequently showing abilities that our draftees and free agents lack?
A few other points:
1) If it wasn't for Kobe, this squad is (at best) on a level with an expansion team.
2) If the 2008 plan helps us land Bosh (absolute best case), the remainder of our atrophied roster won't be enough for a championship, even with triangle experience and Phil Jackson (the latter not a given).
3) Terminating Brian Grant inarguably made business sense this summer. But it also destroyed ballast for trade-matching for ending contracts. The former is a business decision, the latter is potentially a championship decision.
We shouldn't be struggling against one of the weakest teams in the NBA, particularly if the team is without it's best players. If it wasn't for Kobe, this team would struggle and probably lose against European talent. |
