Not sure if you're married. But if I had a chance to make 30x more next year, my wife would divorce my butt if I walked away from it.
Kerr is in his 2nd year of coaching. What point is it to sit and wait around (and be paid tremendously less...remember Ty Lue was the highest paid assistant and was making something like 1.1m/year).
And if the Lakers were able to snag some upgrades via FA, top 3 pick, improved play from youngsters, Luke would certainly be interested. His wife would be interested in the pay raise too most likely.
Well, it's probably not 30X, the last year of Lue's contract was $2m, I believe. It's probably 6-10X what he's getting now.
But, regardless, he and his wife are doubtless very comfortable already and we're not talking about walking away from a coaching career but when to begin. If he doesn't accept any offers this year, he'll get more next and each year until he accepts one.
Kerr could've taken a coaching job sooner and he's married.
In any event, have a great off-season and it becomes a much more attractive job. Rebuilding under a microscope and picking up Byron's mess is much less attractive than coaching Durant led super team.

I wouldn't put too much value in that. I also "plan" to have some delicious leftovers from Maestro's steakhouse today but if a friend calls and offers me a free lunch at Pacific Dining Car, I'm out.
How did your lunch end up? As planned?
As for whether Luke meant what he said, time will tell. Certainly, though, FA will do a lot to impact the attractiveness of the Lakers job.
Walton is not getting paid 2m a year. Ty lue was apparently the highest paid assistant and he's a smidge over 1m. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

It'd be interesting to know how many of the people who are clamoring for Luke to return to help the Lakers were calling him "Puke" a short time ago.
Luke was a mediocre player are most successful head coaches
He had to rely on his brain to get by the NBA. While other players were pumping iron, Luke was doing mental gymnastics. Makes for a good coach. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss
On the serious tip, hire Luke, bring Nash as his first assistant.
Doubt Nash would want a full time assistant gig. I would want to bring Ron Adams with him from GS _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' Luke is in a good position. If I were him, I would stay in GS for one more season to get more experience and see how the teams who might pursue him add pieces to their roster. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

Or to monitor whether Kerr can do this for the long haul I suppose.
But he's going to probably be paid under 1m as most assistants are. If a team is willing to offer him 5-7m a year...he may just make the jump. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

Bill is a really good guy but he's also a bit of a looney you know, Luke is a grown man, he will make his own decisions, and i doubt he will even consult his dad about it.
Yeah no guarantee he takes his dad's advice on this. FWIW getting the opportunity to be head coach for the Lakers with a ton of cap space and young talent is a rare opportunity as well.

I would want either Luke or Thibs over anybody... but does anybody think Becky Hammon would be an option? Pops disciple, won summer league, sounds like players respect her. Would be ballsy, but interesting

But that might mean he misses out on two great opportunities: LA and NY.

What better job for Luke than LA?
Yup, It can take a decade to have the type of opportunity Luke appears to be lined up for. If he gets a serious offer to coach LA he should take it. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night.
