Staples East?… It was a matchup of winless teams at Barclays Center. Lakers vs. Nets. Two teams enter. One team leaves with their first win.

The crowd may have been as loud as Staples cheering for their 0-4 Lakers tonight. Fans were representing. The Lakers may be in the cellar early in this season, but Laker fans support was impressive.

With the winless start, Scott switched up his rotations, sitting Huertas, Kelly and Bass (for the most part) for Metta, Black and Nance. The new guys brought the energy, led by Metta on D.

“It was invaluable for us,” Kobe said. He and Metta would swap out for each other off and on throughout the game. “He just raises the play on the floor of everybody defensively.”

With Metta sparking the D, the Lakers kept an opponent under 100 with the 104-98 win. Sure it’s the Nets, but we’ve found ways to make bad teams look good in a couple of games this season.

This should have been a big game for Russell, who had 16 points over about a 9-minute stretch before Scott sat him in the third quarter for nearly the rest of the night. Still, a strong game from the rookie.

Kobe -- -- His family was with him on the road. Is this Kobe’s last trip to NY? It may be. “It’s an uncomfortable hug,” Kobe said about the warm reception on the road by fans. Offensively, he was a little more selective on his shots, but still struggled out of the gates missing his first several shots. Defensively, he played a little more spirited but he is still making some very bad decisions. I’ve been harping on this for a while, but watch Kobe’s first step or two after he shoots a three. It’s rarely in the direction to get back in transition. Late in the game, he missed a three and did exactly that. His man scored the easy transition layup off the Kobe miss, something we’ve seen again and again. Not sure if Scott has yapped at Kobe about this, but it happens every game. Tonight with 1:32 left it cut the lead to 3. (It happened in the first half, as well, for a score, but with the game on the line? Nearly fatal.) Scott said Kobe felt better with the sub pattern tonight that brought him back in to start the fourth, then rest, then finish the fourth. So, six stints in the game instead of four. “First quarters I’ve been shooting the ball horrendously,” Kobe said. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 5-16 shooting (1-4 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Not close on a 17-footer. He missed a baseline pull-up over a double team. He attacked left with the shotclock low and was blocked out of bounds. He missed a jumper on the inbounds pass out of that. He missed a wing jumper and stood there on the miss, not getting back and his man scored the easy uncontested layup. He was stripped on the perimeter. He missed a turnaround posting up Ellington. He faced up at the elbow, sliced through a couple defenders and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. Good D on Johnson in the post to get a stop. He attacked baseline and powered in a layup on the other end around a guard. He then drew a Net foul fighting through a screen on the other end. He missed an open 17-footer. He tried to force a pass baseline and it was easily picked off. He popped out open at the wing and sank the catch and shoot three. His missed a tech FT. He missed an open sideline three. He attacked, spun, gathered himself and fed Black in the interior for the dunk. He made a tech FT. Quick cut down the lane and Randle bounced it to him from the post for the layup. He kicked out to Russell for the wing three. He worked the clock down, attacked left, rose up and sank the baseline jumper over the D, vintage Kobe. He had 12 points on 4-12 shooting and 2 assists. Second Half: He forced a long lob and it was picked off, three the other way. He missed a forced wing jumper. He curled into the lane and kicked to Nance for the open jumper. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He blew past Ellington baseline, drew the help D and spun the reverse high off the glass and in (crowd loved it). He missed a big wing three, then his first step was going toward the hoop for an offensive board instead of back court for D and his man scored the uncontested dunk. He was fouled with 23 seconds left up 3, he made both. He was intentionally fouled again with 19 seconds left, he made both FTs.

Clarkson -- -- The steadiest Laker this season offensively despite the ebbs and flows of how we run our offense, Clarkson still has his young player moments…but he’s becoming Mr. Reliable. Just another strong, steady game. The Lakers had just 14 assists tonight, Clarkson had a nice one to Hibbert off the pick and roll for a dunk. He also threaded a pass like Russell to Tarik for FTs. He was his usual explosive self when he got some speed into the paint and finished nicely more than once. He scored a couple And-1 that the D didn’t have a chance on. Defensively, still a lot of work. He and Hibbert had some of the worst two-man D sequences of the game. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He crossed over and missed a tough running fade. He called his own number, attacked right and scored the layup. He sank a wing three on a kickout from Randle. Great job rotating in the paint to swipe a pass under the hoop. Sweet look away pass threaded through several players to Tarik for FTs. He was fouled at midcourt and banked the halfcourter that didn’t count, he made one FT. He missed a long three on a kickout. He kept his man on his hip, the ball low, drew the second defender and flipped it to Bass for the uncontested dunk. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He pushed it out in transition, elevated and flipped in the layup. He was called for a carry. He got tapped on a short one off two long steps and some contact. He attacked off the wing screen, got into the paint and flipped in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a wing three. Quick attack from the wing on the ball reversal, he drew contact and hit the easy And-1 at the front of the rim, he made the FT. He zipped it to Hibbert under the hoop for the dunk, working the screen-roll. He attacked with speed, elevated in a crowd and hit the floater. He attacked and threw it away, dunk the other way. He missed a good look at a FT pull-up jumper. He attacked and charged with 39 seconds left up 5.

Randle -- -- “I got to keep seeing what I can do better. Limit mistakes,” Randle said afterward. They sagged off him and did a good job taking away the driving lanes. It was a quiet night for him, but he still finished with 14 and 7. At some point these are going to be average, quiet 17 and 9 games, just by getting more experience and learning to impose his game on opponents better. The jumper will be a work in progress all season as witnessed by the huge make in the final minute. With the clock running down, he pulled up standing on the three line and banked in the big make. Defensively, is really where he needs to limit the mistakes. Every game, he has several mental mistakes on that end of the floor that cost the Lakers. Kobe remarked to him during that game to just imagine a young 22-year-old Ron Artest out there defensively and how much of an impact he made then. We talk about Randle hitting that jumper and everything opening up for him. If he picks up things from Metta out there to impose his athleticism on D? Well, you’ve seen a few moments when Randle is aggressive like that. It’s impressive. I don’t know if Metta can ever get in his head on that end of the floor, but playing with him in real games may be a step in the right direction. It’s all about seeing that end of the floor, anticipating and making his reaction instinctual. He’s a long ways from that. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Great read, jumping the passing lane to take a steal for a dunk. He missed a 17-footer when the D sagged off. Lazy perimeter pass, stolen for a layup the other way. He pushed it out in transition, surveyed the floor, spun on Lopez and scored the layup. He missed a short one in the paint. He hit Clarkson on the kickout for the three. Poor box out and he gave up a foul and second-chance. He blocked a shot under the hoop bouncing up quickly on a second effort (more please). He posted up on the other end and drew FTs, he made both. He drew FTs coming off the Kobe screen in the triangle and taking the pass in the lane, he made one. He hit Kobe cutting out of the post for the uncontested layup. He had 7 points, 4 boards and 3 assists. Second Half: He worked the midpost and hit the turnaround in the middle of the lane. He attacked down the lane, spun as Thadeus fell and drew FTs, he made one. He forced up a wild one on a probe and missed badly, layup the other way. Lost on D and his man scored the easy layup. He was called for a travel trying to create up against the shotclock. Out of control trying to push it up through traffic on the sideline, turnover, dunk the other way. He was blocked on a drive. He attacked to his right with the shotclock, low, brought it back to his right and scored. He banked in a long pull-up jumper with a minute left standing on the three line.

Russell -- -- This should have been a longer game for him. “It’s just about doing the little things to stay on the floor,” Russell said after his 16 points and 3 steals in just 23 minutes. He had stretches in this game where he looked more like the Russell we saw in college. He was aggressive with the shot during those stretches and knocking them down. “I’m getting the same shots every game. It’s just about making them,” he said, saying he just needs to stay in the gym and get more shots up. Scott subbed him out midway through the third and didn’t bring him back until a little over 3 minutes left in the fourth. Even then, he only let him run briefly before sitting him again. He said Kobe is in his ear helping him translate what they learned in practice to the game. A lot of this is about confidence for him. Wish we could have shown just a little more confidence in him in the second half tonight after one of his best stretches of shooting we’ve seen. Hopefully, he can carry that through to the next one. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-9 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He swiped a pass, but threw the outlet away. He was strip-blocked out of bounds on a cut in traffic. He swiped a pass but couldn’t finish the layup on the break. He had a basket erased on a moving screen call. He swiped a pass on one end, crossed over to lose his man badly and missed the flip in layup on the drive, he was fouled on the putback attempt, he made both FTs. He pulled back the dribble on the sideline and his man went down off the screen onto his back and Russell drained the open sideline jumper. Soft touch on the wing three off the Kobe kickout and it dropped in. He pushed it up court quick next time down, measured and swished the wing three in early offense. He had 10 points, 3 steals and 2 boards in the half. Second Half: He worked off the high screen and hit the elbow pull-up jumper. Way short on a long three. Smart cut after setting the screen for Kobe weakside, he noticed a little daylight and went to the hoop instead of continuing to the corner, Hibbert hit him and Russell scored the layup. He swished the wing pull-up working off the screen.

Hibbert -- -- He had a couple of excellent blocks late in the game, one to save Randle’s bad D, the other to reject Jack in the lane and control. The D has a lot of holes in it. I’m curious to see more minutes where Hibbert, Nance and Metta are on the floor. We need a defensive lockdown unit if we ever want to go on any kind of run. Offensively, we do a very poor job integrating Roy and some of his strengths, but we’ve got bigger issues than that still. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. He was blocked in a crowd in the paint. He was called for an illegal screen. He picked up his third foul and had to sit with at the 8:45 mark of the half. Second Half: He reached on a smaller man and gave up a dunk. Good read when Russell cut differently than we usually see on a weakside screen to get open under the hoop and he found him for the layup. He dunked off the screen-roll with Clarkson. Great reaction to step out and swat Jack in the lane, controlling it in the process. Nice rejection to help Randle out who got burned on a drive in the final minute.

Williams -- -- The Lakers bench outscored the Nets 38-16. We need to see more of that…the just 16 points part, especially. Average game from Lou. His first score of the game came off of another one of those fouls on three-pointers. He’s clearly out-doing Nick in the crafty ability to manufacture FTs from three. I didn’t think he did anything particularly well enough to merit the time over Russell. Clearly, there’s the trust factor with Scott going with vets. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-9 shooting (0-4 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with The Action: He suckered the defender into a whistle on a reach several feet behind the three line, he made all three. He blew past his man down the lane for a layup. He missed a long three. He missed a pull-up from 17 feet. He attacked in early offense and drew FTs, he made both. Second Half: He made a tech FT. He missed a corner three. He split the double and swished the floater in the middle of the lane. He missed the tough fading jumper trying to draw a whistle. He missed the wing three. He spotted Nance cutting baseline for FTs. He curled off the handoff, drew the D and kicked to Nick for three. He attacked and missed the runner, then fouled in transition to give up FTs. He airballed a corner three up against the shotclock.

Black -- -- Good energy by Tarik off the bench as the backup C. The defensive mobility helped. The energy also converted into 8 trips to the FT line. I think it will also help pull defenders into the paint and he makes strong rolls to the hoop, allowing for better spacing and open looks for others. This should have been the decision from game one. It was predictable, though. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 1-2 shooting (5-8 from the line) to go with 6 boards (2 offensive), 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He couldn’t finish at the rim. He grabbed an offensive board and missed the easy And-1, he made both FTs. He rejected a reverse layup on help D. Clarkson threaded a sweet pass to him and he drew FTs, he made one. He drew another whistle battling on the offensive glass in a crowd and returned to the FT line, he made one again. He battled for another offensive board but couldn’t hold onto it trying to score. He swiped a post entry pass. His moving screen erased a basket. He slammed off the drive and dish set up from Kobe. Second Half: He drew FTs on the defensive glass with 1.8 left in the quarter in a battle boxing out, he made one. He drew a charge on the Nets in early offense.

Young -- -- He started a little slow, the shot selection not great early on. He stayed focused on D, however. Then, late in the game he had the Nets on their heels with a series of scores. He had a couple of wild chucks, but he regrouped and closed strong. The new second unit without Kelly/Bass and Metta’s intensity looked much tighter. “He’s been our leader really,” Nick said of Metta. He said he’s very vocal and always talking to guys. He went into Swaggy mode a little after the game in the postgame interview. First time we’ve seen that all season. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-9 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 block and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He missed a long three with the shotclock running low. He swatted Bargnani on iso D. He missed a tough off-balance heave from three at the end of the quarter. He missed a wing jumper on an inbounds. Second Half: Iso chuck from the wing and he missed (avoid those, please). He missed a wild chuck from three, not close. He swished a big wing three on the kickout from Lou. He bolted down court when Metta picked his man, took the outlet and scored the layup around defenders. He swished a three off the down screen out of the timeout shortly later. He missed a heatcheck from the wing. He was fouled with 8 seconds left and made both.

Nance -- -- Good game from Larry Jr. in his official NBA debut. His mobility and hoop smarts helped the Lakers on the defensive end. That’s only going to get better. Offensively, he didn’t hesitate when he had the shot and knocked down a couple from the perimeter. Even though he didn’t get credit for an offensive board, his energy there resulted in a possession or two regained. We have three of our better defenders sitting out while we were getting smoked. Good to see them thrown in the mix. The team D had some of its better rotations all season. Certainly, the opponent helps, but we did play better. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He kept a missed FT alive and we regained possession. He missed a jumper, but Black drew FTs fighting for it. He was called for an illegal screen. He popped out behind a screen and hit the baseline 15-footer. Second Half: He leaked out and Metta hit him with the outlet for FTs, he made one. He sank the quick-fire baseline jumper when Kobe kicked it to him. He was hacked trying to power in a reverse setup by Lou, he made one. He got rejected trying to dunk baseline.

World Peace -- -- You could tell from the last game that we were about to unleash Metta soon. He came in for Kobe a number of times and brought some much needed defensive intensity to the floor. There were several sequences with multiple efforts by Metta on that end of the court. Something that’s been sorely missing. In one of those, he helped on three different players, moving from one side of the court to the next before blocking a shot. His offense may be a bit rusty, but the D was strong. A good game, led to a good postgame interview. I missed these. “Sometimes parents will adopt children and give them gifts. L.A. gave me a ring. I love my adopted parents,” Metta waxed about the Laker blood that now flows through him. He said physically, he felt good, except for his haircut. He apologized for that. “I led the game with a +12,” he said. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (all threes) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was indeed a +12. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He sank a corner three on the drive and dish from Clarkson. He missed a wing three up against the shotclock. Great defensive sequence, helping on three different players on both sides of the court before blocking a shot out of bounds. Long outlet to Nance who leaked out for FTs. He stripped Johnson on the perimeter, came up with it and hit Nick down court for the layup.

Bass -- -- Scott finally buried him. If you count the preseason and this game…that’s 10 games. Scott’s magic number sometimes before unfolding his arms and making a rotation change. I don’t think Bass would have played at all had Hibbert not been in foul trouble in the first half. Clarkson set him up for a dunk for his only score. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 board in 3 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Clarkson drew two defenders and flipped it to Bass for the uncontested dunk. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Scott -- -- They trailed 15-6 with some inept offense and a lot of misses from Kobe… He brought in Tarik for Hibbert… He sat Kobe for Metta down 11 with 5 minutes left. Williams for Russell… He sat Randle for Nance… They cut it to 3, but faded at the end of the quarter… The Lakers trailed 27-18 after the first. Nets had a 19-7 advantage on the glass… He started a Black, Nance, Young, Kobe, Williams lineup… Hibbert in for Black with 10:28 left… He brought in Black and Randle for Nance and Hibbert, who picked up his third… Clarkson and Russell in for Williams and Young with 8 minutes left… He brought in Metta for Kobe at the 7:22 mark… They tied it up 32-32 on a 12-3 run… Bass in for Black with 3 minutes left… Good close to the half with Russell hitting a couple of threes. They outscored the Nets by 14 points in the second quarter… The Lakers led 52-47. The Lakers had a 12-8 advantage in turnovers and 7 steals. They shot 4-10 from three, while the Nets shot 0-5 from three… The Lakers led 66-62 and Scott sat Russell for Lou midway through the quarter, despite Russell looking like he was on and leading the team in scoring… He called a timeout shortly later with the score tied up… He sat Kobe for Metta out of that… Nance in for Randle, Lakers up 3… Young and Black for Hibbert and Clarkson, Lou to the point… The Lakers led 79-72 heading into the fourth quarter… He started the Black, Nance, Young, Kobe, Williams unit… He sat Black for Hibbert at the 9-minute mark… Kobe out for Metta shortly later, Lakers up by 5… They quickly extended the lead to 10 behind a couple scores by Nick and a great defensive play by Metta. Timeout Nets… 11-point Lakers lead with 6:42 left… Clarkson in for Young, who was on fire, shortly later. Lakers up 9. Then Randle in for Nance… Wow, finally going back to Russell with 3:45 left. That was a good 15 minutes off with a quarter break in between. Kobe in for Metta, as well, Lakers up by 7… Timeout Scott, Lakers up 7 with 2:19 left… Lou back in for Russell with 1 minute left… Timeout with 24 seconds left. We inbounded and they coughed it right back up trying to get it to Lou. Lakers up 3. Then the Nets were called for a 5-second inbounds violation, turning it back over. Whoever is less inept will win… Lakers held on… Nets shot just 3-19 from three…

Thanks DB!!

Missed the game, but watching the replay.

Happy to see Nance get some playing time! I thought he'd help the Laker effort on both sides of the floor with lots of energy. No highlight reel dunks this time but if Scott keeps playing him it's just a matter of time.

MWP - wow what a great game! Teaching defense by example. I did not expect him to be that effective considering he's supposed to be way past his prime, but he's showing what it means to be a real professional out there!

Russell - should have played more than 23 minutes. I think he's got a 30 point game waiting to happen some night this season.

Black - WAY better center than Bass. Then again, Bass isn't a center!

I'm glad Scott's starting to show a willingness to change up the lineups.

Most of all - good to see a WIN finally!!

Hopefully the rookies will acquire the ability to have consistent excellence min their play that parallels the excellent breakdowns that you have been doing every game

There appears to be some similarities on how Byron is developing DLO to how Pop developed Tony Parker forcing/pushing/challenging/prodding for the search of excellence. Can Randle/Clarkson/DLO capture the essence of TD/Manu/Parker in the very future as the cornerstone to win multiple rings?

MWP had more energy and intelligence than all the young players combined while leading by example.

Kobe's guy did get a lot of "leak outs" for easy scores. Hopefully he is crashing the boards to get rebounds (ala Doc's Celtic's teams) that means that Randle/Clarkson/DLO are defending transition D

Hibbert/MWP/Nance/Clarkson/Anthony Brown can be the lineup if D is needed

---

"Entering Friday's game, the Lakers were allowing 116.7 points per 100 possessions with Russell on the court this season, compared to 109.2 with Russell off the court, according to ESPN Stats & Information."

Thanks, DB!

Did not see the game, your recap is filling the blanks nicely.

Seems like Lakers benefitted a lot from finally having a defencive SF in game.
It would be nice to see what Brown can bring there as well.

Nice to get a win.
Gonna be a long season.
When we win, I like to sit back and just enjoy it, keep the criticism in check.

Thanks DB.

Metta for the win.

Inexcusable Russell didn't get more run. He basically barely plays in the second half of games. And his play today certainly warranted more minutes. Ridiculous.

My favorite play of the game:

The actions are simple and the spacing is a bit off, but no one stood and watched after the first PnR or the later post up. Instead, they moved with a purpose, going straight into the next action and keeping the defense occupied, and Randle made an excellent bounce pass to the cutting Kobe.

Thanks DB! Nice to get in the win column. MWP had a big impact on the defense. You could see how he helped to raise the intensity level of his teammates. Like I said in a game post, "Finally, the Lakers are fired up about something."

Good: Even distribution on scoring. Better defense. More agressive Russell. Hustle by MWP, Black and Nance Jr. Benching Kelly (hopefully for good).

Bad: Byron holding out Russell despite more defensive effort and agressive offense. Goofy rotation with Kobe in the second half. Bass in the game at all. Hibbert foul trouble.

I love Metta's enthusiasm and passion for this team and its traditions!

I was looking at my TV like "did that just happen?" after that play.

Yeah, I think Kobe moving off ball would help open things up for him rather than stand alone isolations or chucking 3s. He's still a smart cutter when he wants.

The one thing he needs to cut back on is his gambling on passing lanes (and totally missing and not returning back to his man) as well as the failure (not just him) to get back on transition defense.

I always see Hibbert/Kobe as the last 2 guys to get back on D.

That was NNNNIIIIICCCCCEEEEE (spoken with a Stu Lantz inflection)

Maybe we can include after each game, the number of excellent sequences that provide evidence of the growth of the Lakers' rookies

Last night, there was one excellent sequence, hopefully the upcoming Knicks game will have at least one, maybe two

I was at Barclay's - there was a buzz in the stadium every time Kobe or Metta touched the ball. Also, my entire section was basically only Laker fans

will try to keep it going at MSG on Sunday though that's a true road game with usually a good showing by knicks fans. Hopefully they do better than they did last yr on Super Bowl sunday when a sorry knicks team blew us out.
