I wouldn't go so far as saying "cut the cord" with Kobe.

I think out of respect, the Lakers tell him the truth, which is:

1. lesser salary
2. lesser role, possibly off the bench

Kobe says no thank you, and wins his gold medal in the Olympics and enjoys the rest of his life.

This is the reason why we are where we are, Lakers don't owe Kobe anything.. if anything he has been robbing us being the highest paid player the past couple of seasons while producing at a mediocre level. This is and should be Kobe's last season whether he likes it or not, Lakers should not offer him anything after this season.

They've paid the man around $27M for each of the past three seasons for very little in return. When he's not playing, he's not even with the team.

I'm also concerned that Kobe has developed a bad habit as of late, of saying one thing and then doing another. That would concern me in a scenario where they're offering him any kind of contract for a lesser role. Sure, all is well and dandy when he says ok I'll take a lesser role, but it's a whole other situation when they're benching him for shooting 29% and everyone is saying "how can you do a legend like that?"

Cut the cord means rip off the band-aid. Not "take a break" on a reduced relationship. Sometimes, it's best just to move on. No hard feelings. He'll collect his last payment from his "for services rendered" deal and they'll be even steven at that point.

Let's stop making out of respect decisions and let's start making basketball decisions again. Kobe isn't a bench player and never will. He had a chance to play a lesser role this season and so far he doesn't look like he can do it so this is it.

Plus who knows what kind of privilege you get in your 21st season. Maybe he woudn't even have to run back in defense or something.

I don't think you're understanding my point. Instead of kicking a legend out the door while he's down its a more diplomatic and generous out to give Kobe a choice to retire.

It's the same goal but done in a manner more befitting a legend like Kobe.

All Kobe needs to do at season's end is announce his retirement from the NBA. I think that would be the most ceremonious since he would get a presser most likely for an announcement like that.

It's a bit like making him an offer he CAN refuse. That is the gracious way to end a legendary career.

And this is coming from someone who hated the Extension. But I see the bigger picture here.

Don't see Kobe coming back, not a chance. He will no longer put any kind of tarnish on his legacy. I don't wish him gone, but I do not think it is good for anyone for him to come back.

what is wrong with kobe. good god. obviously it's meaningless for lakers to win right now so it's fine that kobe is making the lakers lose.

but it's really sad to watch him unable to make any shots.

I've been saying since the achilles tear he'd be done. But I didn't expect him to look this bad. Sad to see.

Still annoying he leads the team in minutes, shots, etc.

Like it or not this team needs Kobe Bryant.

outside of one very good efficient game, what would the Lakers team be missing?

He sells tickets. Thats the only need he currently fulfills.

You must not be paying much attention, he is teaching the young players the ways of the game. Clarkson, Russell and Randle have all mentioned how much he works with them. So no, that isn't the only need he currently fills.

Maybe he is behind the scenes. But on the court, he's still shooting too much.

Another great "teaching lesson" by the mamba. 1 for 14.

A 23 million per year teaching lesson. Watch me shoot 20 times a game, at a 30% clip. Professor Kobe.

Is he shooting below 30% yet? Like I said, he's just embarrassing himself out there.

so let me get this straight.....you come in here to brag about how you've been cheerleading for Kobe to suck since 2013. I make a sarcastic comment about it, and somehow that leads to you asking me a worthless question you already knew the answer to.... for "confirmation".

I would ask "Are you happy Kobe is sucks right now?" for confirmation but I don't need any

Yeah, its definitely sad watching him in this form. Where as when Magic was suddenly gone from the NBA in 1992 he was still near his prime, so all you remember was the good memories. And by the time he came back he adjusted his game for the partial season he played in 1995.

Didn't come in here to brag. Just to state a fact and P&M about Kobe's pathetic showing in the GSW game.

What are you doing in the P&M thread? The other thread is on page 2 or something. Go there..... You're not going to see much you like in here bud.

To answer your question, the Lakers getting back to being good makes me happy. I've accepted Kobe's inevitable decline years ago. I'm at peace with it and ready to move on now. I don't cling to things from 10 years ago and decry "ohhhhh if healthy and stuffers"

Honestly, I think Kobe is one of the worst players in the NBA.
It was way off base for ESPN to rank him among the upper quartile.
I would say he's in the bottom decile.

He would never do it but he needs to take the Duncan, KG role. Be a mentor to the young guys. This over shooting is sad and exactly what his detractors say about him.

I don't think he's capable of a Duncan role.
Duncan is actually able to play at the level of a good starter in the NBA currently.
He might be able to do a KG type role, but he clearly doesn't want to.

Magic was definitely a good player that year in 1996 and if he weighed 215-220 like he did during his prime instead of as the fat hog at 255, I would argue he was still better at age 36 than Nick Van Exel at point guard and Van Exel is my favorite Laker. Kobe is just complete trash this year. No way around it.
